We are in need of a nominating committee for calling members to ask if anyone is interested in serving on the board or any of our committees. Therefore, if you are currently serving on the board or a committee please decide if you would like to continue with your present position or step down. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for a position on the board of directors or any of the committees please do so. The positions call for all types of talent so here is an opportunity to share your special talent with the OFAA. Voting for the board of directors positions will take place at the May meeting. As you know our treasurer, Steve Miller will be leaving the OFAA. Kathy Murphy has agreed to take over as our treasurer for the remainder of the season. Thank you Kathy. Opportunities are not far from your door when you belong to the OFAA! Joye Moon has served as an Art Fair chair for many years and she has decided to step aside this year due to other obligations. Joye was in charge of contacting city police, city disposal, porta-pottie rental plus other duties. She has written an excellent, easy to follow report of her duties. As a result, taking over these responsibilities will not be difficult. And of course Joye is available to answer any questions one may have on these duties. I have an e-file of Joye's report available for anyone who may be interested. Thank you Joye for your part in making the art fair a success. As usual our monthly meeting will be held at the UWO Alumni and Convention Center. See you there. Did you notice? At the last meeting the lights stayed on during the entire meeting!!! Hurray!!! 3 Minutes for January 6, 2014 Page 3 President Jill Soik opened the meeting. Terri Einer introduced Bruce Bodden as our guest artist program. Secretary s Report: Minutes from the November 4 meeting were approved. Treasurer s Report: General - $8, Scholarship - $ (A.B. fund $ and the student fund $ ) Holiday party - $253 & Workshop exp. - $206 Workshops: Lynn Artz reported that Ryan Radke s workshop on Feb. 7 will be held at the Oshkosh Town Hall on Cty Y with continental breakfast at 9. There are 9 confirmed reservation and room for 15 max. The Paper Marbling workshop with Nancy Akerly will be held on Sat. April 18th from 9 to 3:30. Scholarships: Nothing to report at this time. Programs: February s program will be a demonstration of a watercolor drizzle technique by artist Deb Debo VandenBloomer. Historian: Send any pictures or articles to Shelley Ingala. Newsletter: If you have an art piece accepted into a show or have received an award, please send a picture (jpeg.) of the piece. Publicity: Karen Crown reported the issue concerning our show information in the 2015 Art & Craft Directory has been settled. Will Kuehnn from their customer service department agreed that we have been on their website for many years and the event is updated annually with the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau as a free service. Policy has changed in the printed version, now it will cost $25 to $250. Because it is already in this year s book layout we will not be charged. Publicity info has been sent to the Northwestern and the Oshkosh Scene promoting the January meeting and about our speaker Bruce Bodden. Please contact Karen at crownkaren@gmail.com if you have an event needing publicity. Old Business: Big Thank You to Sarah, Max & Sandy for a great December party. Art Fair: Shelley will handle the registration, Carolyn will ready the award ribbons, Sarah will chair the Members Booth. Lynn is updating the artist list of 537 names and is trying to keep the same list current for contact. The goal is to be ready in the near future to have an online registration process. Kathy will be posting information to the web and facebook. Anita, Laurel & Elli will work the Silent Auction, Elli will arrange for the artists breakfast and Linda will be contacting vendors. New yard signs will be printed, required paperwork will be going to the city and Shirley will be compiling a list of names for a possible judge. New Business: Carolyn requested that we look at establishing criteria for giving individuals (that have been members for over a certain number of years) honorary life memberships. March 28 & 29 are the dates for Art In The Garden. Steve moved and Elli seconded a motion to give $400 to the event for the Best of Show award. Motion carried. Jill presented a report from the OFAA board for discussion about fees for workshop instructors. Points made were; 1) Reaching beyond our area to seek guest artists is a way to bring new, fresh ideas to the workshops, 2) People will participate & pay for a workshop which they find to be of value and interest to them, 3) Lodging should be at a reasonable price.

4 Page 4 Minutes Continued & Member News Perhaps $75 or the artist could stay as a guest with a member, 4) Lodging might be limited to a distance of 2 hours or more, 5) Not to include meals, 6) Club not to pay more than $250 for a workshop, 7) If class size is limited then perhaps a double/triple class offering might be possible, 8) Costs should be covered by attendees, 9) Require fees with reservations and have a cut-off date to be able to cancel, 10) Open to the public earlier, 11) Co-sponsor with other clubs, 12) We do pay standard mileage allotment. Additional input - OFAA dues do not cover our expenses of meeting room fee, storage unit fee, meeting program guest stipends and cost offsets for the holiday party and workshops. Scholarships and other awards may be more than what we make at the art fair. Right now we have a surplus but that may only last a few years. In the past, one of our objectives was to give our members the benefit of access to art programs and workshops at lower costs. A formula to help the workshop chair person(s) will be addressed. Meeting Adjourned. During Art Break Jill shared the results of how art that was gifted inspired a new piece. Shirley took ideas from Cori s batik demo and used Rit liquid dyes on Yupo. Cori brought back her finished batik piece and some more Zentangle. Terri shared her latest pastel work. January Meeting Program Bruce Bodden Bruce is a UWO graduate living in Neenah. He works in oil pastels or acrylics and is known for his wood marquetry. His day job finds him in the restoration workshop at the Harp Gallery. Inspiration came to Bruce when he saw The Large Blue Horse by Franz Marc. Now he likes to interpret reality with color and geometry - not to document a scene. Beginning with a photograph, he will make sketches that move the realism into an impression by focusing on the geometry within the shapes. The addition of color enhances the shapes and adds a bold drama. By stepping away from literal realism, Bruce believes you can give yourself unlimited options.

5 Member News & Opportunities Page 5 Our next workshop will be February 7th. Watercolor with artist Ryan Radke. Location Town of Oshkosh town hall. This will be a full day workshop with continental breakfast. 9 a.m. for registration / breakfast & 9:30 a.m. for class. Price will be $22 to $28 depending on number attending. This class has a 15 person maximum. Check out Ryan's website to see what he does with watercolor. Kathy Murphy s photograph Winter Salt Mosaic is in the Midwest Seasons show at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau Jan. 9 to Mar. 14. She also had a number of photos on display at Planet Perk thru Jan. 31 with other members of Oshkosh Photography Group. 7 Nancy Akerly Paper Marbling This would be a Marbling overview class, introducing materials, tools, and techniques. Each person would need to bring an apron or wear painterly clothing, surgical gloves if they are sensitive to the drying effect of alum, a roll of paper towels, a sponge, a sharpened pencil and a hair dryer to make sure papers are dry when we end the day. Nancy will teach participants to create patterns from the 17th and 18th centuries such as Gel Git, The Peacock, Nonpareil, Spanish Wave, French Curl, and Birdwing as well as more modern variations of Stone Marbling, Italian Vein, and Fantasy Marbling. Nancy will supply handouts, a tray of carrageenan for each person, acrylic marbling paints, marbling tools, drying racks, skimming supplies and numerous examples of marbling patterns and ways to use marbled papers. (We may need to share trays depending on the size of the class) For more about Nancy and to see examples of her work go to Participants should plan on completing about 8-10 sheets of marbled paper, as time allows.
