1 Volume 23 Issue 5 June 2012 Northwest Affiliate of The National Established in 1984 to advance the stature of collage as a major art medium General Meeting Tuesday, June 19, :30 a.m. SHORELINE CENTER, st Ave. NE, Shoreline Refreshments Gail Larson Kim Weers Leslie Raphael Collage Drawing June donor: Stella Gausman Fall Show The Burnley Gallery at The Art Institute of Seattle, Reception Oct. 4, 5-8 p.m. Show runs October 2-31, President s Message For weeks now, writing this letter has been a real challenge. Why? I m not sure; spring fever perhaps? As I keep looking for a subject, my mind drifts back to the opening of the National Postcard show. Aha! I ve have had my theme right in front of me the whole time. It has been a true honor to hold the National Postcard show here in Seattle. When Gail Larson and Donna Jean Perry started looking for a venue, they were searching for a museum dedicated to educating their viewing public. And, the Bellevue Art Museum was the perfect choice. The BAM is not only a beautiful building but also dedicated to presenting outstanding shows. When the museum was in its infancy about 65 years ago, the plan was to create a place to showcase work and educate the people in the area. This plan first took place in the form of an old house in CELEBRATING north Bellevue. The second facility was in a church-funeral 100 YEARS OF home, located where COLLAGE JC Penney now stands in Bellevue Mall. BAM then moved to a larger facility on the third floor in the rebuilt mall. Today, the museum is a beautiful structure that opened in 2001 and was designed by a noted architect, Steve Holl. So, our show is not hanging in just any museum; it s hanging in one of the best and most historic museums in the Pacific Northwest. Our National Postcard show is hung on three walls near the front entrance. Great care and thought went into grouping our entries. They were first sorted into groups of similar colors. Each group was then separated into an equal number of pieces. Continued on page 4 June Program Roxsane Tiernan Vancouver (BC) area artist Roxsane Tiernan is an international traveler and educator. Her cross-cultural experiences blend with her imagination, creativity, and love of the outdoors to provide an endless variety of subjects for her art work. Roxsane has experimented with many media throughout her career. But her discovery of Chigiri-e (a Japanese torn paper technique) really opened her creative channels! At our June 19th meeting, Roxsane will focus on Japanese papers and the Chigiri-e technique. She will discuss the various types of paper and their uses, demonstrate the creation of a simple scene, and answer our questions. She will share samples of her work and a PowerPoint presentation. Visit to see her work. Evening in Provence by Roxsane Tiernan

Newsletter Editors: Gina Hanzsek, June Ireland, info@nwcollagesociety.org Mail: 2512 NE 178th St. Lake Forest Park, WA Susan Lehman Seduced by Paper Susan brought several of her paintings to share with us. While her work was passed around, she described to us her process of floating water onto 300 lb. hot press paper and then floating black gesso onto the surface. After this preparation, Susan begins to add found papers and more white and black gesso. She goes back over this with some opaque paint, adding more paper as needed. She finishes with a clear sealant and a spray varnish. A few of the examples she brought were on Frederix board, a light weight canvas board from Susan typically works on at least two pieces at a time and talked to us about the value of working in a series. She finds doing so, she doesn t over work things; when she gets stuck, she moves on to the next piece. Susan also mentioned the value of belonging to a critique group, and the fun and challenge of collaborative art, where one artist starts a piece, then passes it on for others to work on. Visit www. susanlehmanartist.com for more examples of her work. Take something. Do something to it. Do something else to it. ~ Jasper Johns

Prompt Your Way Out of an Artist s Block In her presentation at our April meeting, artist Susan Lehman mentioned pulling a prompt from a bag when wondering where to go next with a work in progress. Do you know and use this technique? It s easy and can really inspire you to break through that block. Make a list of actions you could take. For example: add tape; cut your work in half or other portions and reassemble; cut or tear a hole in it; add a frame to a part of it; add three squares (a triangle, two overlapping circles, five lines, etc.). Look for ideas you don t usually use even we creative types fall into habits! When you re stuck, look over your list or randomly stab to pick one and see what comes of implementing it. Better yet, cut the list into separate items and keep them in a jar, bag, or envelope to draw from. Some artists like to glue their prompts onto sticks and stand them in a jar to pull from in an art emergency. Using artist prompts can push you into new territory, away from your tried and true solutions. See what kind of a list you can come up with, and seek out new approaches to add to your collection of prompts.

Jill Sahlstrom, certified public school art teacher, is teaching an acrylic painting class Monday nights in Monroe at the Ben Franklin Art supply store. It is 5-7pm for three nights. We will be exploring color theory. You can see some of Jill s mix media work on display in Edmonds at the Edmonds Art Conference Center until June. Keith Pace has a collage selected by the jury for the Edmonds Arts Festival Juried Gallery. Light Metal #3 by Linda Guerrero Dissatisfaction is a significant key to quality. Art, said the American sculptor John Chamberlain, is basically made by dissatisfied people who are willing to find some means to relieve the dissatisfaction. In the midst of dissatisfaction ways are found. Without dissatisfaction it is swiftly possible to fall in love with your own mediocrity. Utter dissatisfaction can be liberating. If the wine is not good, said Michelangelo, then throw it out. New Members Liz Copeland, Bellevue Stella Gausman, Bellevue Stacy Hamm, Everett Elizabeth Ruest, Bellevue CeCe Sullivan, Seattle Shoreline Arts Festival June We need more volunteers to work in the Collage Room at the Shoreline Arts Festival. This is one of the most popular activities of the Festival and is a nice way for the NWCS to contribute to the community and at the same time inform people about our. Here s what s involved. The room will be all set up and ready for activity. Volunteers assist visitors in selecting a support and papers and getting them started in creating their own collages. Some people clean up after themselves and others do not. When a visitor leaves, volunteers make the space ready for the next potential collage artist. All volunteers may display their collages for sale. The display panels are about twenty inches wide and six feet high. Your art must be wired and ready to hang. You will need a label (a business card works well) and a list with titles and prices. If a piece sells, a volunteer will take the buyer and the collage to the Arts Council Office, just a few steps away, to process the sale. That piece is marked sold on the artist s list. If you have questions or would like to sign up to help, please Gail Larson at glarson456@gmail.com. June 2012
