Over the past four decades, we have seen many changes within the breed and always persevered. We continue to strive and I believe we have succeeded in assembling a quality group of cattle that are functional to meet the needs of all breeders, in every facet of the Angus business. We are extremely saddened with the passing of one of our foundation females, Davis Rita As you view this sale book, you will see a constant power that she continues to bring to the table, including our first calf crop of Shady Brook Titan 1026; as well as our featured Lot 1, Shady Brook Rita This year we are excited to have Kiker Angus, Sweetgum Farms, and Lone Oaks Farm as guest consignors. We continue to stand behind our cattle and always will. We believe there is something here for everyone. We do our best to offer good quality cattle. Again, I would like to thank my father, Tony Santini; without him and his well wanted input; none of this would be possible. We hope that you can join us on April 12, 2013 at the Shady Brook sale facility to see our cattle and enjoy dinner following the sale. 4 The History of One does not expect to find a native of Siderno, Marina, Italy and his second generation Italian-American wife in rural Tennessee raising children, grandchildren and Angus cattle. Nor would one expect that two of the most famous and valuable cows in the history of the Angus breed would have risen to fame in the hills of Tennessee rather than in the high country of Montana or the plains of Kansas where they were born, but that is exactly what one does find at Shady Brook Angus Farm. This look back at the history and evolution of Shady Brook Angus Farm and its patriarch and matriarch borrows heavily from the research and writings of Ms. Jody Johnson in a biography of Tony Santini that she compiled more than 25 years ago. Ms. Johnson described Tony as a master craftsman with wood, cloth or Angus cattle. Her description at that point in time was certainly prophetic. And as Tony is now enjoying the fourth quarter of a century of an active and fulfilling life, he now focuses his time on his grandchildren, the land that he loves and supporting his son Vince in the continuation of the corner of Eden that Tony and Lucy Santini named Shady Brook Angus Farm. Now nearly a half century after a newly married first generation and second generation I t a l i a n - A m e r i c a n immigrant couple moved to a small rural town in south Tennessee, this proudly ethnic family resides in Villa Santini and cares for a patch of God s green earth known as Shady Tony Santini Brook Angus Farm by cattlemen from around the world. Retired from clothing manufacturing after owning and operating plants in Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, the Dominican Republic and Vietnam, Tony and Lucy spent most of their life manufacturing clothing masterpieces for designer labels like Ralph Lauren and Christian Dior and worked closely for decades with the famous Jones New York brands. As he had with wood, Tony had a special talent for being able to tell famous designers what would work on the sewing floor and what would not and he could personally perform any and every task that he hired and trained workers to perform. His word is more than just a bond for Tony Santini and he described his approach to clothing manufacture in this way: When I tell a person what we re going to do, we do it. If I say the work will be out on Friday, it s out on Friday and they know it s going to be done right! Tony & Lucy Santini An avid fan of the History Channel and an attentive student of news broadcasts for his entire life, Tony refined his understanding of the English language and his ability to assess and predict changes in American culture with television. While his formal education ended at the second grade, the ability of Tony Santini to analyze situations, do mathematical calculations in his head and to adapt to changing environments is legendary. Perhaps a lifetime of experience observing, anticipating and participating in changing trends in clothing and fashion prepared Tony better than many others to recognize and accept changes in trends in the Angus industry. The original membership in the American Angus Association was purchased by Antonio and Lucy Santini on August 28, 1973 and the first Angus cattle produced from registered Angus cows purchased from a local Tennessee Angus herd were registered in the spring of 1974 with the TS prefix. The currently active membership of Shady Brook Angus Farm was originally purchased on March 3, 1982 and as the saying goes, the rest is history. Like all of their endeavors in life, the introduction of Tony and Lucy Santini to the Angus business began in a modest way with a small parcel of land, a few cows and Tony and Lucy doing the work themselves. They laugh heartily as they recall their first adventures with applying tattoos to cattle and registrations and records. All new businesses go through numerous stages of metamorphosis and the first stage of Shady Brook came to a close in 1984 with a dispersal sale that resolved an original partnership. During the second half of the decade of the 80 s, with the farm under the management of Wayde Womack, Shady Brook purchased and produced some of the dominant show cattle of the era and Shady Brook hosted production sales in 1987 and 1988 that were among the best in the breed. In 1989, Tony made the decision that he needed to build a new home for his family and at a peak of popularity, the Shady Brook Angus herd was dispersed for a second time in Breed records fell at Shady Brook as a second chapter of the legacy came to a conclusion.

5 Shady Brook Angus Farm The third chapter of Shady Brook under the management of Dave Nordin began with the purchase of the entire 1989 bred heifer crop from the McCumber Angus herd in North Dakota and through the decade of the 90 s, the 9J9 GAR 856 management torch was passed to Tony s long-time friend Joe Bill Meng after the dispersal of the Meng Farms Angus herd in Kentucky. During that decade of great change in the Angus industry, Shady Brook became known as the home of the dams of famous herd sires. The dam of GAR Precision 1680 came to Shady Brook as a $45,000 top-seller at Gardiner Angus Ranch and she was joined by the legendary Sitz Everelda Entense 1137, the cow whose meteoric rise began as the natural dam of both Sitz Traveler 8180 and Sitz Traveler They were later joined by the dam of RR 9440 Scotchcap as the search for proven genetic power was unending. It would be safe to describe the decade of the 90 s as the roaring 90 s at Shady Brook as the acquisition of some of the breed s greatest foundation genetics, the rapid multiplication of those genetics through extensive embryo transfer and the sales of the resulting animals all set new standards for the industry. On March 22 and 23 of 1999, the third chapter of the Shady Brook legacy came to a close as Joe Bill moved on to pursue other interests and Angus records were broken once again at Shady Brook. In a time when there had been less than twenty sales in the history of the Angus breed with a sale gross in excess of $1,000,000, the Shady Brook Dispersal of 1999 had a sale gross that exceeded $3,000,000! The sale of Sitz Everelda Entense 1137 for a new world record price of $210,000 and the record-setting sale of her daughter as a $150,000 bred heifer set the tone for an event that will long be remembered by all those who attended and participated. Under the combined management team of Sitz Henrietta Pride 501 Brian Flach, Jerome Hunter, Michael Graveman and Vince Santini, the Shady Brook Angus herd was rebuilt rapidly with the addition of the dynamic new donors Sitz Henrietta Pride 501 from the record-shattering 1999 sale at Sitz Angus Ranch and GAR EXT 614 from the dispersal of the nearby KMK Angus herd of Tony s friend and traveling companion Leon Heron. A continuation of the extensive Shady Brook embryo transfer program soon had the herd back to more than 600 head. Drastic changes in the economic climate of clothing manufacture brought dramatic change to the Santini family and their core business and on September 14, 2003, the fourth chapter of Shady Brook came to a conclusion with another round of new records for the Angus industry broken when half interest of GAR EXT Sitz Everelda Entense sold half interest for $230,000. Just one month after the 30 year anniversary of Tony and Lucy Santini joining the American Angus Association, the final chapter of the original Shady Brook legacy was written in record-setting fashion SAV 8180 Traveler 004 again. Patiently and methodically with the assistance of Wes Womack a young man that grew up with him at Shady Brook while his father worked for Tony, Vince Santini has stepped forward to carry on the family legacy during the first decade of a new millennium and a new Shady Brook Angus Farm has been reborn. With the wisdom and guidance of his father to assist him, Vince has taken Shady Brook Angus Farm into new arenas with a fresh perspective of genetics from Canada, Montana and beyond. The focus for the second generation ownership and management of Shady Brook is on doing it his own way and few that know his parents would expect it to be any different than that for Vince Santini. When asked by Ms. Johnson in her original interview with him about how he managed all of his diverse business interests and overcame the odds at virtually every juncture of his life, Tony Santini GAR EXT 614 answered in the very basic and direct manner that all who know and love him expect when he said I pay close attention! What more can be said? Based on the rsearch and writings of Ms. Jody Johnson

Tony and Lucy Santini started Shadybrook Angus over 40 years ago and 2013 marks the 40th Anniversary of the program. Always a family operation, the Shadybrook torch has been handed to Vince Santini and his family; the tradition continues on. Shadybrook has always been known as an enjoyable place to be on sale day, the hospitality is always first class and of course, the cattle are bred to have the genetics for the current times. Over the years, some of the breeds most popular and famous females have graced the rolling pastures of Shadybrook and in turn have set record values during their particular eras. Just a couple of the renowned females owned by Shadybrook over these 40 years are Sitz Everelda Entense 1137 and GAR EXT 614 with progeny of these females continuing to contribute genetic value to the herd. Headlining the Shadybrook Angus program are two recognized and proven herd sires; Soo Line Motive 9016, a tremendously popular son of Kodiak 5R bred in the SooLine herd in Saskatchewan, Canada. Motive was the leadoff bull in the Champion Pen in Denver for SooLine and his progeny have continued to be very popular in the show ring as well as known for their muscle, thickness and power. Look for his progeny and services throughout the sale. A new addition to the Herd bull battery, SAV Best Interest 0136 brings a new dimension to the Shadybrook breeding program. Best Interest s impact will be felt in the program over the upcoming breeding seasons. An outstanding offering of select females, bred heifers, cows with fall calves at side and an exciting set of 2013 heifer calves. Lot 1, Shadybrook Rita 1028, an exciting sister to SB Titan 1026, the popular son of Motive where an interest recently sold in the 2013 Bases Loaded Sale headlines the sale. Vinnie reluctantly let us add this bred heifer, a daughter of the recently deceased, Rita Take a special look at her. We urge you to review the entire sale book for the many top females offered by Shadybrook along with guest consignors Kiker Angus, Ga; Lone Oaks Angus, TN and Sweetgum Angus, TN. The females offered by these breeders will add genetic value to any herd. We look forward to seeing you at the Shadybrook 40th Anniversary Sale. We will be at the sale ahead of time.
