Fabulous May 2016 www. southernazwatercolorguild.com May Meeting! MAY 9th DEMO ARTIST - BARRY SAPP Have you ever wondered how Barry Sapp finishes his beautiful watercolors? His UV resistant and archival finish requires no glass or Plexi! He will demonstrate his own technique for sealing his work. You ll want to take notes of the multi-step process. Barry is a past president of SAWG, a Signature member, a teacher, juror and award winning artist in several organizations: Western Fed, Arizona Aqueous, The National Western Art Exhibition and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Show and the Empire 100 Western Art Show. He is a member of the Mountain Oyster Club as well. The two galleries in Tucson that represent his work are Jane Hamilton and Sanders Gallery. We appreciate his time and generosity in sharing his secrets! May is the month when many members leave Tucson to travel or return to their summer homes. If you are still in town you don t want to miss our final general meeting, May 9th. In addition to Barry s presentation, the winning slate of officers who will serve on the SAWG board next year will be introduced. What a great finish to an outstanding year of demos and member presentations at the Scottish Rite general meetings! MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR MAY 9TH, 7 P.M. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As the countdown to our 2015/2016 fiscal year is underway, I stop think of all that has transpired in the last year. Our beautiful new gallery was barely a hope and a prayer with everything SAWG being stored when the old gallery closed. Larsen & Baker have been incredible to work with and the entire makeover of our building only cost SAWG the amazingly low price of around $3,000. This amount included, our paint color on the walls, windows and walls removed, a wall added, all new large floor tile of our color choice, several new electrical outlets, a utility sink (with all new wall plumbing and the one thing that I still cannot get over is the price was one ceiling sprinkler, required by law at $1,400. You can see by the numbers and what all was done that Larsen & Baker were pleased to have us in the center and paid a great deal for SAWG interior reconstruction. Our first summer show had too many paintings to hang. How can that be we asked? By the end of the summer shows we knew how many painting would fit nicely in the gallery and we kicked off our regular season with a Grand Opening, a beautiful reception, a harpist at the reception and most importantly a fantastic selection of art on the walls. This year the awards were phenomenal with many producers of artist supplies donating generously and some new dollar amount awards were presented by generous sponsors and patrons. During the following months the board and members have worked very hard bringing many of the SAWG procedures up to speed and keeping us legally in line. Becoming current and up to date was one of the items in the Long Range Plan that is almost complete. We found several money saving changes that will continue to save money for years to come. SAWG has had a fantastic year of very successful workshops with one class actually taking on several more artists than our agreement with the artist/instructor called for. He was a true sport. I am sure many of you will say, what about this or that? Yes, so much more has gone on and if I tried to list more you would be bored to tears. You will notice I have not used any names because there is no way I can thank all of the people who have stepped up and helped move SAWG forward. Yes, the year has been a challenge and a learning experience but at this point I would not change this experience for the world. Judy Peterson Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. SHOW NEWS r e m m Su ows! Sh see your work! We want to New or Old! The Gallery will host 4 separate shows over the summer. Glass may not exceed 16 X 20. YES! We need jpegs. Summer hours will change to 11-4:00, so artists will be responsible for 2 (11-4) shifts during the show. More details on our website. We WANT your paintings on the walls! We NEED docents over the summer to keep the gallery open, so we REALLY appreciate our volunteers. June 7 FRIDAY, July 15 #2 Sum-Sum-Summertime! (6 weeks) Entries by Fri., May 20 The gallery will be CLOSED on July 4 and on July 16 and 17 for painting. If you can help, please let us know. July 19 Aug. 28 #3 Dog Days of Summer (6 weeks) Entries by Fri., July 1 Aug. 30 Sept. 2 #4 See You In September (5 weeks) Entries by Aug. 12 Consider leaving a painting with a friend who can bring them to the gallery for you if you are out of town for any of these dates. May 3 - June 5 Thinking that we may not have enough entries in our first summer show to fill the gallery, we invited members to rent a wall during the summer shows. So, like icing on the cake, we have an entire wall of artwork by Carolyn Streed and Nancy Huber hanging during the first summer show, our Mother's Day show! Renee Pearson is the lucky recipient of our Volunteer Appreciation drawing for the first show, so we will have her lovely artwork hanging on the office wall as well. The artists reception is FRIDAY evening, May 6, from 5-7. Be sure to check it out. The show runs through June 5. Also, for our second show, Sum-Sum-Summertime!, be sure to check out Ellen Fountain's wall! Note that we still have a wall to rent for the third show, the Dog Days of Summer. Contact Judy Constantine if you are interested in renting an entire wall or splitting it with someone.

3 SCHOLARSHIP UPDATES! SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! Scholarship Awards Presented... Our gallery was filled with students, families and SAWG members at the April meeting of SAWG. Following a lovely reception hosted by Margo Haar and Karen Richert, and a brief business meeting, scholarship awards were presented to six local art students. A total of $5750 was awarded and was possible thanks to fundraising and donations from SAWG members, former members and families. The Laura Hollander Memorial Scholarship for $1000 was presented to Naomi Chandran from Canyon del Oro High School. She plans to be an animator and has been accepted at both the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Pratt Institute in New York City. Kayley Manuel from University High School received the Award of Excellence for $1000. Kayley has applied to both MIT and Stanford. Kayley showed us her paintings done in both mixed media and oil. The Lois McDonald Memorial Award for $750 was given to Mackinzi Blank from University High School. Mackinzi plans to become a visual effects artist and will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design. Karena Gonzalez from Ironwood Ridge High School received an Award of Honor for $750. She will study illustration, special effects make-up and plans to receive her certificate in art education at New Mexico State University. Another Award for Honor for $750 was given to Madeline Penna, a student at Canyon del Oro High School. She wants to be a designer in fiber arts and will attend Pima Community College. Emilio Grivjala of Pueblo High School will attend New Mexico State University and plans to study animation. He received the Award of Merit for $500. Unable to attend due to work obligations was Emma Bayne, winner of the Shirley Hamilton Memorial Scholarship for $1000. Emma will attend the University of Arizona to become an art teacher. Chuck Albanese, SAWG member, architect, teacher and painter addressed the students, teachers and members gathered. He detailed his nearly 40 years at the U of A in the architecture department as both faculty and Dean and the trips he took taking students to Europe and Greece over 20 times. Many of those students are now accomplished artists. Chuck encouraged the scholarship winners as they begin their formal training, that whatever paths their studies take them they can use their art and the way they see the world in any field.

4 UPCOMING SHOW NEWS The 2016 Experimental Show April 5 - April 30 SAWG s Experimental Shows are always fun and surprising, and this season s show was one of the best! This was the last show of the SAWG season, and it did us proud: we had wall masks, hanging ceramic leaves, a standing bird of rebar, cardboard and watercolor, as well as an amazing assortment of two-dimensional creative artwork. Bob Luedtke took Best of Show with his creative structure of metal, watercolor and whimsy, The Three Amigos. (It s about time, huh, Bob!) Sharon Nemirov, with her soft, desert-themed wall hanging, Desert Sculptural, Blooming, was the recipient of the Ruth Canada Award. Congrats also to Robbie Summers (Wine Tiles,) Renee Pearson (Floral Fantasy,) and Bethanne Simpson (Waterbird) for their awards, with Honorable Mentions to Judy Constantine (Lost in La Placita) and Jerold Bishop (Over The Moon.) Janie Gildow, our Awards Judge, had a blast picking the winners, and she went with the flow of the show s experimental theme. On a personal note, the Experimental Show was my very first experience as a show chair (in 2012, with Jennifer Clark), and it has always been a favorite for our artists and visitors alike. I m already looking forward to what our amazing guild will produce for next year s show! Have a great summer, and think about it! Submitted by: Judy Constantine Co-Show Chair Congrats...People s Choice! Jenny Clark s Electric Tucson III was awarded a certificate for the People s Choice Award for last month s, Experimental Show, which also comes with one free painting entry for another Show. Volunteer Appreciation Drawing Winners Announced! Summer Show #1 - Reneé Pearson Summer Show #2 - Nancy Huber Summer Show #3 - Monica Hart Summer Show #4 - Dennis Garrison

5 GALLERY & MINI WORKSHOP NEWS Introduction to Scratchboard Ever hear of scratchboard? It is white clay on a masonite surface covered with black ink. By scratching away the surface to reveal the white underneath, the artist creates dramatic images with little effort. It is a very forgiving medium: scratch something you didn t want? Just grab a pen and cover it over! Learn the basics and get some hands-on practice in this introductory class. Judy Constantine, Instructor, judycons@gmail.com MAY 18 (Wednesday) OR MAY 20 (Friday) 10am-1pm Share your skills! Sign up Today! SAWG is ready to have mini-workshops in the beautiful workshop area in the back of the Gallery. The space will hold about 8-12 students and has great light. Your class can be on any art-related subject, including computer use for artists, or in any odorless media. If you would like to reserve days and times to teach your class, please call or Mary Kramer, , or mimahk@gmail.com. She will send you an Agreement form, with the terms and conditions in plain English. Members will have first choice, but we also plan to offer the space to instructors in other art groups. So pick up the phone or get onto your computer and reserve your space ASAP! DOCENTING NEWS A great big thank you to Mary Kramer and Dru Hill for being our wonderful docent coordinators this year! However, they are retiring from this position, and SAWG needs someone to take over this important job. It requires some computer input (entering names and phone numbers into a calendar template,) some work (distributing the calendars and asking for sign-ups,) and a little patience. (Doesn't everything worthwhile require that?) Please contact Nancy Holmberg if you are interested in helping out in this capacity. Note also that our new summer hours are 11am-4pm. This is considered one shift, and we still need two people to be in the gallery every day we are open. Wells Fargo Bank: General Fund Checking...$21,719 General Fund Savings...$38,753 Total...$60,472 SUMMER GALLERY HOURS 11am - 4pm Mary Kramer will once again be offering docent training at the gallery. Call her, or , to register and get dates and times. 7 LONGTIME MEMBER RECOGNITION In March we began a series that will feature long-time SAWG members with an article on Past President, teacher and distinguished artist, Deanna Thibault. We followed that in April recognizing Past President and nationally known artist/ author/ illustrator, Tom Hill. This month we recognize two outstanding women for how they lived and expressed their lives through their art: Wanda Hein, Past President of SAWG, artist and teacher and Margaret Erath, textile designer, artist and teacher. Margaret Erath In her own words, My main goal in painting is to take JOY in the gift God has given me. This comes about in taking what the Living God has created in life and in a designed way to recapture the beauty I see to give to othersfor His Glory. Margaret Erath has been a SAWG member for nearly 30 years and has won numerous awards for her work. A lifelong artist, she took art classes in high school earning a scholarship to Parson School of Design. As a textile designer for 32 years at the Gloria Brice Studio in NYC, she lived on Long Island raising 4 children and painting at night to create the designs she took into the city. It was the perfect job! When Margaret moved to Tucson she joined the joined the Guild in Her unique style of lines, points, and mosaiclike application of color and texture reflects her earlier career. While in Tucson she taught art to women at the prison for 18 years every Saturday. This work inspired one of her collage pieces, Eve that won an award in the 2013 Annual Show. Aside from her obvious artistic accomplishments and skill as a painter, Margaret s quiet, humble presence and her ministry of encouragement through notes and cards to members (often anonymously) is as much part of her legacy as a long time member of SAWG. Currently she is part of a three-generation showing of art at Moh s Gallery on Ft. Lowell Rd. Margaret, her daughter Alice and her grandson, Jon each have a piece in the exhibit Prayers For Tucson. Shown top to bottom... Let the Church Rise by Jon Erath, Santa Cruz Church by Alice Roder, Fear God, Not Man by Margaret Erath. Note- The exhibit at Moh s Gallery through May 7th depicts Stories of Tucson s Spiritual History from Father Kino to Bishop Salpointe. The show will be be featured in a documentary shown at United For Tucson at the TCC Arena on the National Day of Prayer, May 5, Wanda Hein At 97, Wanda is frustrated that she hasn t been able to paint in the last 2 years due to some health challenges. Although she is in now in home hospice care, she is as passionate as ever recalling her life as an artist, her studies, various mediums she experimented with and the 1000 s of her paintings that have found new homes throughout the US and many foreign countries. Born and raised in Southern California, her formal art training included Santa Ana College, an MFA from UCLA and graduate studies in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Workshops with many nationally known artists followed over the years. From 1969 on she pursued a full time art career, with numerous exhibits and solo shows winning many awards. Wanda joined the Guild in 1980 and served as President in Her watercolors reflect her love of the Southwest expressing the spirit of nature. In her own words, Wanda beautifully details the path of creativity for every artist: My paintings are a result of my love of color, fluidity of paint and the excitement of discovery! The process of painting is a continuous mix of anticipation, frustration. desperation, and joy, always seeking and finding new ways to see that which has been said a million times before. When stating the intention for her art, she explains, I approach painting in a personal, exploratory manner and refuse to be restricted by rules. I hope to stimulate and excite the imagination of the viewer. Those are worthy goals for all of us in SAWG. Several years ago, Wanda generously donated one of her beautiful paintings, On the Rocks to SAWG for the Permanent Collection. She will be donating some unframed pieces to be auctioned at a future meeting in the next SAWG year to benefit Scholarships, a program she worked with during her time in the Guild. Thank you, Wanda for your contributions to SAWG over the years and for the enthusiasm and inspiration you shared with your students, friends and colleagues through your art.

9 WORKSHOP NEWS A NEW YEAR OF WORKSHOPS! In March we concluded an amazing year of workshops. Four of the nation s leading artist/teachers were all here in Tucson! Everyone who had a chance to see any or all of them at the demos or in the workshops came away inspired, having learned some new approaches, techniques, tools and tips. Can it get any better? Well, Maybe... Now is the time to look ahead to next year s group of artists coming to SAWG. Below is the schedule, websites and highlights about the artists and what they will be teaching. There is no June Sketchbook so we will detail the classes in the July/August newsletter. Registration as always begins July 15. Please note that in Feb. there are two 2-day workshops- more details on price will follow. November 15-18, FRANK FRANCESE Landscape Watercolor Workshop - You may remember Frank when he was here in His painting of the Windmill Inn is part of the SAWG Permanent Collection. His signature style is unique and distinctive- liquid on a very wet surface with pure color! His teaching style is entertaining and informative! This is a class where you will loosen up and have fun. January 10-13, SUZANNA WINTON Realistic Watercolor Portraits - When you see the beautiful expressive portraits on Suzanna s website it s easy to see why she has been the recipient of over 30 national awards, is featured in multiple art publications for her watercolors and is in demand as a workshop instructor. Plan to sign up early for this class and learn how to paint a variety of ages and skin tones and jump into to a subject many artists avoid. Her book, Realistic Watercolor Portraits is available on Amazon. February 14 & 15 AND 16 & 17, JEAN HAINES The World of Watercolour - In Jean s case, World is literal. She has studied with the masters in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. While living in China she studied brush control that inspired her direct yet fluid style using vibrant pure colors. We look forward to being inspired by her experiences, enthusiasm for the medium and skills she has to share! Jean will be teaching two separate workshops - February 14-15, 2017, and February 16-17, March 14-17, CAROLE HILLSBERY In over 30 years of a passion for watercolor and it s magic, Carole has been winning awards for many of them. She s a Signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Western Fed., Northwest Watercolor Society and Arizona Watercolor Society. Her workshop will cover painting on watercolor canvas as well as Arches paper. Carole s energy in loosening up and painting powerful, passionate paintings is sure to be contagious! The 2016/2017 SAWG Workshop year promises to be another one to learn and be motivated but more than that to HAVE FUN!! Look for more details on how to sign up in the next newsletter and on the SAWG website.
