2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT A few weeks ago, I made an unexpected trip to Chicago, one of my favorite cities. Unfortunately, this visit to my niece and her family was mixed with anxiety and fear; her (otherwise) healthy, physically fit husband had been diagnosed with leukemia. My roles were varied, those 10 days, but I left feeling so thankful that I had been there to help. Thanksgiving has new meaning for me this year, and in the spirit of giving, I d like to thank, for all of us, a few of the people who tirelessly give to our organization. We appreciate our VP of Shows, Judy Constantine! Judy s efforts throughout the summer to rouse the sleepy desert-dwellers into visiting our gallery were endless. When the neighboring restaurant closed, and we seemed all alone, Judy found people who wanted to hang in our space and attend our openings (some for reasons other than viewing the art!). With an eye toward fresh, new ideas, Judy promoted a reworked version of Fiesta Sonora and launched us into untapped territory at Tohono Chul. We appreciate Mary Kramer, Judy s mentor and able-bodied assistant, who has a tireless interest in helping wherever needed. We appreciate the show chairs, most immediately Anna Don and Monica Hart, who seemed to run around in circles polishing off incredible fetes to showcase our work. We appreciate the incredible volunteers who ran with them to make sure each detail was in place, and we surely appreciated Carl Dalio, our first workshop presenter, who brought inspirational instruction. We appreciate Debra Irons! Even though Debra was the President of SAWG a few years ago, she continues to be the go-to person for a countless number of needs. She quietly masterminded construction (and renovation!) of our projection system, speaking in a vocabulary that left me far behind! (an L-support? Really?) She knows all about contracts, and insurance, and papers that need filing, and easily fills in for anyone needing a sub. I have thanked Debra so many times for so many things that it seems like a recording. Again, thank-you, Debra. We appreciate Sandy Walker, our amazing graphic designer, who makes us look like a Fortune 500 organization! Sandy s creativity each month with the Sketchbook touches each member, and who could pass up our shows after seeing those first-class postcards? When it comes to presentation, Sandy is our idea pro, and we appreciate her with every visual she creates. And last to be appreciated this month (more to come in succeeding issues!), is our there are never too many details to think about Membership Chair, Carolyn Thurman. We appreciate Carolyn for keeping over 400 people registered, recorded and informed, answering more questions each month than can be imagined. What s doubly appreciated is the fact that Carolyn continues to look for ways to improve the quality and quantity of data in our base. Thanksgiving this year will have new significance for my family. The Chicago contingent is in the process of healing, and every day there seems to be another reason to be full of hope. Belonging to this organization at this particular time in my life has also been a blessing, and I have appreciated getting to know each one of you. When Thanksgiving rolls around, may you personally have a million reasons to smile and give thanks. Jenny Clark SHOW NEWS 9th Annual Community CALENDAR SHOW Calendar Show Coming Soon! 3 SHOW Holiday 200 Under $100 Show On this month s masthead, we are recognizing Signature member Pamela Howe s painting, The Look Out. This painting is on exhibit in this year s 2013 Fiesta Sonora Show. NEWS The Holiday Show is Coming! In a few short weeks the 200 Under $100 show opens at the SAWG Gallery. A few reminders: A few reminders: all work must be original and show guidelines apply with exceptions. The size minimum is 4 x4, and the max is 16 x20. Glass may be used for this show only. Framing needs to be clean with the proper wire hanger- no sawtooth hangers. The deadline for entry forms is Nov. 22. NO jpgs are required. The first 200 paintings get hung - others will be placed on reserve if the selling artist does not have a replacement. It s going to be a fun show! Special Event for the Holiday Show On Monday, December 9, from 6-8 p.m., there will be an elegant, private reception at the SAWG gallery before the show opens to the public. Tickets for the reception are $10 - either purchased in advance at the gallery or at the door. The event is limited to 100. Delicious appetizers and wine (in glasses) will be served at this special event. Members and their friends are welcome. The 200 Under $100 Holiday Show is an excellent opportunity to buy original art and holiday cards from our talented Guild members! Last year over 80 pieces sold during this show. Don t miss out on the preview. On Thursday, December 12, the gallery will hold the Annual Holiday Gala Reception from 6-8 p.m. If you can t make the preview be sure to take time to celebrate the holidays with fellow SAWG members. A new class in Beginning Watercolor started in the gallery on Friday, October 18. Please get in touch with Mary Hayworth if you d like to join them. Mary s number is (520) GALLERY News The WOW summer shows of 2013 came to a close the morning of Monday, October 14, and don t blink! the Fiesta Sonora show went up that same afternoon! The busy, vibrant, varied-media shows of the summer are now replaced with our first impressive Guild show of the season, beautifully displayed in our gallery. We did well with the WOW shows, easily covering the cost of the gallery, and selling a little bit of everything! The October figures will be summarized in an upcoming Sketchbook. It s been quite an experience running these shows, and I would like to thank all the folks who helped make it a success: Sue Rumsey, who does an amazing job all year keeping the gallery in tip-top shape; the efficient, patient and helpful check-in and check-out helpers Del Marinello, Nikki Bellio, Ginny Cosbey, Deanna Thibault and Judy Peterson; our WOW reception hostesses Romy Angle and Deanna Thibault, Kathryn Greco, Izapat Asimuth, Jennifer Clark, and Terry Bustamante. We even had live music -- keyboardist Dan Starr in July and August, and harpist Vesna Zalusky in September. Thank you to both of them. Debi Crawford handled a very important role: getting the artists checks sent out! Debra Irons scrambled at the very beginning of each show to make sure any vacant walls had artwork on them from our permanent collection. Sandy Walker created bright, eyecatching e-vites and posters showafter-show. Thanks to everyone else whose support and advice kept me sane all summer. And, of course, a big thank you to all the artists who exhibited in our gallery. It does indeed take a village! Judy Constantine for a complete list of SAWG teachers see the bulletin board at the gallery

4 WORKSHOP Ratindra Das November NEWS Don t miss out on the fun! Register now! You are invited to sign up for the Ratindra Das Workshop at the Windmill Inn on November Ratindra is a popular workshop instructor. Some of SAWG s members were lucky enough to meet Ratindra at the Gallery last February. During his November workshop, Ratindra will encourage you to trust your intuition and give your paintings heart and feeling. Sign up now. There is still space available. Don t be left out. For additional information and registration, visit our website Taking a good, hard look at yourself can sometimes be a bit unnerving, but that is indeed what SAWG is going to do within the next few months. Since embarking on the running of a gallery a few years ago, we have been focused on making a successful venture out of our space. Although that has certainly not been the only activity receiving attention, our collective energies seemed to be pretty well maxed out! Developing a Long-Range Plan is an appropriate next step for us, setting goals for the next few years. We are fortunate to have on board Nancy Huber, a Past- President of SAWG, with years of professional experience in organizational functioning. Nancy has begun the process by promoting an appeal for opinions, both positive and negative. At the October meeting, forms were distributed, and if you were unable to be there, you can find more of them at the gallery, posted on the website, or sent by at your request (contact Nancy nancyshuber@gmail.com.) We ve set the deadline for November 17th, at which time she will aggregate the data and reflect it back to the membership for evaluation and comment. Once that part of the process is complete, Focus Groups will be asked to further analyze Carl Dalio was here! Everyone enjoyed Carl Dalio s great demo at the September meeting. Below are his comments about the Fiesta Sonora Show... I m honored to be the juror for this 2013 Fiesta Sonora exhibition. And what a treat to jury for awards in the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild s Gallery - a wonderful and uplifting space. I want to congratulate all the artists selected for this show, especially the award recipients. And for those artists who were not selected, I encourage you to take up the challenge of determined, expanding creativity - keep painting with gusto! I thank all the members, dedicated officers and volunteers for hosting my visit and making all this possible. May you and your organization have continued success, energy and growth. Carl Dalio Looking Ahead the data and put together recommendations. We re in good shape financially, which is more or less the bottom line. It s hard to believe that just a few years ago we had a somewhat unsophisticated operating budget, and with Betsy Conrad s guidance, we became more accountable. Now we need to analyze our expenditures and identify areas that could be adjusted for better use of our funds. Mary Kramer and Judy Constantine have honed the shows into polished procedures, appreciated by all of our members. Perhaps there is an idea out there that could make them even better. Many of our committees work very hard all year, and in your contact with the outside world, maybe you know of another way of tackling the tasks. With this process, every member has a say in how we operate as an organization, and it should be stressed that it s important to express those thoughts. If you took a form with you at the October meeting, please mail it to Nancy at the gallery by November 17th. Forms will also be available at the November meeting, and throughout the next few weeks. We look forward to hearing from you! 4

A Saguaro Fellow must be a Signature member with 5 additional points, one of which must be from AWS or NWS. Forms are not yet on our website, but you may get one at any general meeting or via at Carolyn@lensview.net Do You Have Old Show Programs? Are you a keeper? If so, please help us fill in some holes in old show data. Membership is looking for programs for the following shows to complete our show file: Annual 2000 and anything from Western Fed Arizona Aqueous 2000, 98, 96, 95, 92 and 86 AWA Spring 2006, 04, 03, AWA Fall 2007, 05, 03, 02, 1999 If you were in any of these shows and have one or more programs stashed away, please send a copy ( or hard copy) to Carolyn Thurman, SAWG Membership/ Carolyn@lensview.net Grateful thanks to Gretchen Huff for starting this valuable file years ago, and thanks to you if you can help us add to it. PLEASE NOTE: Please send any changes in , phone numbers or addresses, Membership forms including Juried and Signature Requests to the Gallery address: SAWG Gallery: Membership 5605 E. River Rd. Ste. 131 Tucson, AZ MORE SHOW NEWS submitted by Carolyn Thurman, carolyn@lensview.net 39th Western Federation Watercolor Societies 2014 The WFWS entry deadline is November 8th. The show will be in Phoenix. This will be a fun one to enter because you can drive to Phoenix to see the accepted entries. Anita Pinkerton, who has two points in WFWS and below is her take on the experience. Do you like to play the lottery or perhaps gamble at the casinos? Well let me suggest to you that the odds of you being a winner at Western Fed are much better. There is no greater thrill than to receive the phone call saying, Your painting made it. All of a sudden you view yourself and your art as winners. To be accepted and recognized for an art piece you have created is a huge accomplishment. Western Fed just lifts you up because there are paintings submitted each year and only about 120 are accepted. Your competition comes from artists representing watercolor societies in about 10 states. When you realize this, it is truly a reason to celebrate being one of the chosen few. The saying, You can t win if you don t play, applies to Western Fed as well as the lottery. Your investment is time, talent, minimal supplies, and a very reasonable entry fee. The benefits are your improved self esteem, showing your art in another part of the country, being one of the select few that get into the show, and meeting and sharing your experiences with artists from other parts of the country. The benefits far outweigh the decision not to enter the show. So, I encourage everyone to take the small risk of not being in the show for the possible reward of being a winner. It is a great opportunity that we should take advantage of. I know! Submitted by Anita Pinkerton 5 PAINT OUTS NOVEMBER PAINT OUT Tuesday, NOV. 19th La Pilita, Barrio Area 420 S.
