Press Release Only one week to go: two art fairs featuring around 200 participating galleries, important solo and group shows, a large-scale retrospective, an artist film festival, and new partners. The variety of the programme of Berlin Art Week will once again make the capital an international meeting place for the art world from September. Berlin, 6 September For the sixth time, Berlin Art Week presents an overview of what s going on in the world of contemporary art. The programme this year is especially diverse and has virtually anything art lovers, collectors, or guests from around the globe might want: Berlin Art Week is supported by the Senate Department of Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises. In the words of Berlin s Senator for Economics, Ramona Pop: Berlin Art Week presents itself for the sixth time as an attractive display of contemporary art, placing attention on the city s galleries, artists, and their work. Around 40 exhibitions were developed especially for the week. With Berlin Art Week and our participation in the VBKI Prize for Berlin Galleries, we seek to strengthen Berlin s art market and reveal the diversity of artistic production in the city. With over 150 events in the programme and numerous highlights, we hope to exceed the number of 100,000 visitors this year. The Art Fairs art berlin and Positions Berlin The Berlin Art Week programme will once again focus on the art fairs. The names of participating galleries from more than 16 countries attest to a broad spectrum of positions presenting artists from Berlin and around the world to the art market. Under the direction of Maike Cruse, who had already served as director of abc, the newly founded art berlin in collaboration with Art Cologne will be presenting around 110 galleries. Not only will the new fair feature significantly more participants showing their artists at Station at Gleisdreieck, the profile will include not only young and established contemporary artists, but also modern art. Positions Berlin Art Fair invites the international art world to Arena Berlin. This year, the directors Kristian Jarmuschek and Heinrich Carstens have selected 84 exhibitors, including newcomers and galleries that have been established for many years now. With a growing interest in the Berlin art market, many galleries from Eastern Europe will be participating this year, now forming one focus of the art fair. The Gallery Openings at the participating Berlin galleries will further expand the spectrum with more than 100 exhibitions in the city s gallery spaces on Friday. For the first time this year the Landesverband Berliner Galerien (lvbg) will be awarding a Gallery Prize of 10,000 Euro in collaboration with the Verband Berliner Kaufleute und Industrieller (VBKI) and the Senate Department of Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises within Berlin Art Week. The unique profile of Berlin Art Week results from the joint efforts of the partners the fairs, the museums, art associations, private collectors, and project spaces inviting guests to the German capital from September. For the first time this year, the traditional Berlin company GASAG joins in supporting the programme, which features a different focus each day. Wednesday, 13 September 2017 To kick things off, the artist film festival la > x, marking the 50 th anniversary of Berlin and Los Angeles becoming sister cities, will be showing Californian artist films at Kino Arsenal. 6 Exhibition 14 SEP 19 NOV 2017 Opening 13 SEP, 7pm In their almost 50 years of collaboration, Danièle Huillet ( ) and Jean-Marie Staub (b. 1933) created one of the most influential and yet controversial oeuvres of the modern cinema, always engaging with preexisting material, often in conflict with it: texts by Höderlin, Kafka, Brecht, Pavese, or Malraux, the music of Bach and Schoenberg, or Cézanne s paintings. An oeuvre that has sometimes been misunderstood as hermetic today proves to be open, playful, and radically contemporary. The exhibition is dedicated to Straub/Huillet s way of working and establishes links to current artistic positions. Three conferences will explore the work from the present, a retrospective will begin in October. The curators are Annett Busch and Tobias Hering. The project is funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds. Berlinische Galerie Alte Jakobstraße , Berlin Wed Mon 10am 6pm Monica Bonvicini 3612,54 m³ vs 0,05 m³ Exhibition 16 SEP FEB 2018 Opening 15 SEP, 7pm Conceived for the large exhibition hall of the Berlinische Galerie, Monica Bonvicini's installation amongst other things investigates the term facade and its function. The show runs parallel to the 15th Istanbul Biennale in which the artist is also participating and features elements from both cities Berlin and Istanbul. Monica Bonvicini (born 1965, Venice) has been one of the most influential contemporary artists of the last 20 years. Her video works, installations, drawings and sculptures explore questions centring around architecture, gender, power and sexuality and touch on social, political and economic issues. The institutional viewing space is often the subject of her work. Thus, Bonvicini's site-specific, power-conscious and gendered allusions to the norms of architectural and artistic modernism quite literally operate on the boundary between artwork and spectator. Christine Streuli Fred-Thieler-Preis 2017 Exhibition 18 MAR 9 OCT 2017 Christine Streuli has been chosen to receive the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting in The award pays tribute to her calculated yet brashly overstated application of painterly technique. In an exuberant visual universe, the artist experiments with the radiant power of colours, patterns and signs. Fragmented brushwork combines in her works with expansive ornamental structures and quotations from an advertising aesthetic and from Pop Art, resulting in new and surprising enactments. It is not unusual for her pieces to burst the classical bounds of pictorial composition, spilling out from the frame and spreading into the room. 12x12. The IBB-Video space at Berlinische Galerie Amie Siegel Exhibition 23 AUG 2 OCT 2017 Ranging from film, video, performance, photography and sound, Amie Siegel s work often questions how things acquire specific value and how cultural memory evolves, itself becoming a product or experience. She is interested in both the constructions and transmissions of place and the iconography of architecture, her works often layer atmospheric, associative tableaux. The two video works Genealogies (2016) and Fetish (2016) screened at the Berlinische Galerie explore questions around the genesis of traditions, originals and copies, and the narratives contained in artefacts. 5

Over the course of a year, the IBB-Video space will present twelve artists who have recently attracted attention with an innovative approach to the film or video medium. Documentary techniques will feature alongside strategies for challenging the medium and testing new formats for cinematic narrative. The format is designed to include both established names in contemporary video art and young artists whose works have rarely been shown in museums. This project has been facilitated by Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB). C/O Berlin Amerika Haus Hardenbergstraße 22 24, Berlin 11am 8pm daily Danny Lyon. Message to the Future Exhibition 16 SEP 3 DEC 2017 Opening 15 SEP, 7pm 1963: Scenes of young African-American protestors applauding, one with his arm raised toward the sky; racial conflict and police brutality. Danny Lyon, the son of Jewish immigrants, was just twenty-one years old and a student at the University of Chicago when he fearlessly took these photographs of a protest that made history: the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. These powerful images would establish the photographer and filmmaker as one of the most important chroniclers of the American civil rights movement. Alongside these early images, Lyon also photographed the series Conversations with the Dead (1967/68), the first to reveal the daily lives of inmates and guards in Texan prisons. In the year before, his collection The Bikeriders (1966) was a haunting, first-hand and unsparing glimpse of life inside the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, well before the release of the American cult film Easy Rider (1969) popularized the energy, independence, freedom, and romance of highways and Harley-Davidsons and brought them into the mainstream. Throughout a career spanning over fifty years, Lyon took countless photographs documenting social reality and bearing unmistakable witness to the political battles of half a century while also seamlessly fusing his photographic work with moving images and the written word. C/O Berlin is the first and only institution in Germany to showcase this comprehensive retrospective with approximately 175 works, including the photographer s most important series from the late 1960s and 1970s, and offers a rare look at lesser-known films, collage works, and materials from Lyon s private archive. The exhibition is curated by Julian Cox and organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Willi Ruge. Fotoaktuell Exhibition 16 SEP 3 DEC 2017 Opening 15 SEP, 7pm Cars racing down Berlin s AVUS highway, planes landing high in the mountains, the Spartacist uprising, insurgency in Upper Silesia, a self-portrait in free fall: As a war reporter and an air gunner, as a commercial director and a businessman, Willi Ruge bore witness to social turmoil and was fascinated by the technical possibilities of modernism that opened up with the dawn of the twentieth century. Rather than observing silently from the sidelines, he plunged right into the fray, often putting himself into the center to the extent that he stepped into the image as a subject. This approach led Ruge to develop more than just the role and self-conception of the photo journalist: Instead of a clear-cut, objective portrayal of his subjects, he conveyed subjective experiences which seemed to have been captured merely by chance. His visual experiments and reportages fed the public appetite for entertainment and catastrophes, while allowing the viewer to identify with his personal perspective. With his passion for sport, aviation, and car racing, Ruge perfectly fit the role 6

of the ideal protagonist in this era of optical sensations and speed. His thirst for adventure took him on travels around Europe, Africa, South America, and even into war zones. His best-known photo series show the photographer himself carrying out spectacular feats. The extreme overhead shots, dizzying worm s-eye views, daring angles, tilted horizons, radical close-ups, and unusual perspectives on the unfolding action reveal his debt to Neues Sehen (New Vision). Ruge s work brings together a heterogeneous mix of politics, a fascination with technology, a love of experimentation, and visual irony and storytelling. daadgalerie Oranienstraße 161, Berlin Tue Sun 12 7pm Wilson Díaz. Chimera Exhibition 16 SEP 15 OCT 2017 Opening 15 SEP, 7 9pm Born in 1963, in a coca-growing region of rural Colombia, Wilson Díaz grew up in close proximity to the armed conflict that has dominated the country s political stage and visual culture for over half a century. The installation Chimera utilizes album cover art spanning several decades to narrate a cultural history of how government institutions, private corporations, the guerilla, and even the cartels wielded their economic interests and ideological positions through popular cultural forms. Wilson Díaz Lecture-Performance 17 SEP, 6pm HAU Hebbel am Ufer HAU1 / HAU 2 / HAU 3 Box office: Mon Sat from 3pm until one hour before the beginning, on days without a performance from 3 to 7pm. Closed Sundays and holidays, Tickets: Tel +49 (0) / service@hebbel-am-ufer.de Retrospective Miet Warlop Performances SEP 2017 On the occasion of Berlin Art Week 2017 HAU Hebbel am Ufer presents a showcase of works by the Belgian artist Miet Warlop. In her performative works Warlop makes visual art using the means of theatre, developing living images. These are located somewhere between absurd theatre and outlandish tableaux vivants. The texture of things is central to Warlop s work, as is creation and destruction against all economic reason. She appeared at HAU for the first time as part of the reopening in November 2012, when she presented performative elements from her production Mystery Magnet. In 2015 she returned with "Dragging the Bone", and most recently in April 2017 with the performance Fruits of Labor. For the very first time, the three works that Miet Warlop herself calls portraits of a decade can now be seen together in one retrospective. Miet Warlop "Dragging the Bone" (2014) HAU3, Tempelhofer Ufer 10, Berlin 14 SEP, 8pm (Performance, 55 minutes) 16 SEP, 7pm (Performance, 55 minutes) 7

Dragging the Bone captivates audiences with living sculptures and animated objects. The solo is based on the bronze sculpture Fegato di Piacenza, an ancient model of a sheep s liver, meant to aid Etruscan priests making oracles. But it is the materiality of things that takes the lead role on stage here. Miet Warlop dips her body in plaster, and through a series of physically demanding movements, brings a huge nondescript object to life. Flying sharks, exploding hairballs and foam fountains also turn up chemical reactions are constantly discharging. In her inimitable way, Warlop tells of the individual, its desires and its fears, giving free reign to its absurd humour. Miet Warlop "Mystery Magnet" (2012) HAU2, Hallesches Ufer 32, Berlin 15 SEP, 8pm (Performance and Music, 50 minutes) 16 SEP, 4.30pm (Performance and Music, 50 minutes) In the performance Mystery Magnet Miet Warlop puts a round of surreal figures on stage to finish themselves off. Her palette not only contains the whole colour spectrum, but also wafts of fog, foam sausages, mini trucks, walking trousers, human balls of wool and a chorus of hair driers. This all adds up to a series of absurd images made of colours, forms and figures, held together by an absurd humour and an obsessive urge to destroy, otherwise only known from cartoons. People, objects and theatrical effects enter into unforeseen relationships. Nothing works like it should, but everything exercises a magical appeal over everything else. Miet Warlop "Fruits of Labor" (2016) HAU1, Stresemannstr. 29, Berlin 16 SEP, 9pm (Performance, 55 minutes, English) Fruits of Labor represents a mixture of performance, concert and visual art, a revue of songs and dances around a constantly transforming, awkwardly oversized white cube. The audience is plunged into a glowing mixture of light, colours, sounds and emotions. At some point the whole space seems to be an instrument. For all its lunacy, this psychoactive parade of images and objects is also the artistic reaction to a world that is falling apart. A reaction that positions its own glittering chaos against control and restriction. What else can be an alternative to plain reality than trying to grasp the soul of things? Miet Warlop asks. Haus am Lützowplatz Lützowplatz 9, Berlin Tue Sun 11am 6pm Thomas Feuerstein Prometheus Delivered Exhibition 14 SEP 19 NOV 2017 Opening 13 SEP, 7pm Berlin s Haus am Lützowplatz shows the first show by artist Thomas Feuerstein (b. 1968, lives in Vienna) outside Austria. In his projects, the Austrian artist, who works at the intersection of applied and theoretical research, links epistemes from philosophy, art history, and literature with biotechnology, economics, and politics for an artistic narrative that explores questions of the existential basic parameters and the origins of life. A key aspect of Prometheus Delivered is the deconstruction of the Greek myth on human creativity and hubris. The exhibition is a collaboration with Munich s Eres Stiftung and is being realized with the support of the Schering Stiftung, Berlin. 8

KW Institute for Contemporary Art Auguststraße 69, Berlin Wed Mon 11am 7pm, Thu 11am 9pm Willem de Rooij. Whiteout Exhibition 14 SEP 17 DEC 2017 Opening 13 SEP, 7 10pm KW presents a selection of work spanning the last 20 years from artist Willem de Rooij (born 1969, NL). The ethical and political consequences of mass-distribution of visual media, and the representation of appropriated imagery taken from cultural and historical artifacts, and artistic sources are some of the main concerns in de Rooij s practice. The exhibition also features significant early work made during de Rooij s 12 year collaboration with Jeroen de Rijke ( ). Nina Könnemann: Free WiFi Performance 17 SEP, 8pm KW Building, 1. floor The performance Free WiFi 3 will be shown simultaneously at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Live streaming apps have come to prominence as tools for citizen journalism, but most people use them to share their boredom. One of these apps, Periscope, provides a platform for the video performance Free WiFi by the artist Nina Könnemann, in which multiple participants create a real time montage consisting of live video and texting. Part of the performance s content is prearranged, but the format is also open to contingencies, technical shortcomings, and interference by strangers. The broadcasts in the performance are all streamed from locations offering Free WiFi. Diverse public and commercial settings, such as waiting lounges, coffee chains, and libraries merge with virtual online space to create an imaginary Free WiFicontinuum. While these spaces are becoming obsolete, due to the proliferation of mobile data plans, they are still valuable for the homeless, tourists, and digital nomads. Nina Könnemann is an artist living in Berlin, working with video and sculpture. Free WiFi is the title of a series of live video performances, first shown at Oststation, Vienna in Solo presentations include: Toronto International Film Festival, Taylor Macklin, Zurich, Halle für Kunst, Lüneburg, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Portikus, Frankfurt am Main. me Collectors Room Berlin / Stiftung Olbricht Auguststraße 68, Berlin Wed Mon 12 6pm Portrait of a Nation Contemporary Art from the United Arab Emirates. 13 The second edition of the Festival of Future Nows will take place during the Berlin Art Week 2017 at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart Berlin. As with the first edition, in 2014, this year's cooperation between the Nationalgalerie and Olafur Eliasson and his Institute for Spatial Experiments brings together a diversity of artistic works by more than 100 international artists. Interdisciplinary formats like temporary settings, collective performances, improvised installations, situational readings, poetic sound performances and playful interactions are at the center of the four-day festival: the challenge is in the moment. The time is always now. The project is supported by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and made possible by the Freunde der Nationalgalerie. moving is in every direction. Environments Installations Narrative Spaces Exhibition 17 MAR 24 SEP 2017 The exhibition moving is in every direction. Environments Installations Narrative Spaces traces the history of installation art from the 1960s until today with a focus on narrative structures. As the visitors move through the exhibition, they explore expansive walk-in environments, video and sound installations, as well as cross-media works especially developed for the exhibition. The non-linear narrative structure, put forth by Gertrude Stein, to which the exhibition title relates, serves as a starting point for exploring sculptural arrangements, image sequences, or spatially staged narratives. Within the approximately 3,500 square metres of exhibition space, there are installations by Marcel Broodthaers, Isa Genzken/Wolfgang Tillman, Susan Philipsz, Pipilotti Rist, Bunny Rogers, Wolf Vostell. Artists: Richard Artschwager, Joseph Beuys, Barbara Bloom, Marcel Broodthaers, Stan Douglas, Urs Fischer, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Dan Flavin, Ceal Floyer, Isa Genzken/Wolfgang Tillmans, Ilya Kabakov, Allan Kaprow, Edward Kienholz, Robert Kusmirowski, Bernhard Leitern, Shahryar Nashat, Bruce Nauman, Susan Philipsz, Hermann Pitz, Walid Raad/The Atlas Group, Pipilotti Rist, Bunny Rogers, Gregor Schneider, Thomas Schütte, Christopher Kulendran Thomas, Wolf Vostell, Qin Yufen Rudolf Belling. Sculptures and Architectures Exhibition 8 APR 17 SEP 2017 Rudolf Belling ( ) was one of the most important German sculptors of classical modernism. The Nationalgalerie held the artist s first museum exhibition in 1924 and now presents this pioneer of sculptural abstraction in the large-scale show Rudolf Belling. Sculptures and Architectures. The exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of his oeuvre in 40 years and shows Belling s importance for the avant-garde of the 20th century. The exhibition takes eleven main works from the 1920s as its point of departure. The total of around 80 exhibited items from the 1910s to the 1970s, including sculptures, drawings, models, films, photographs, and figures, illuminate the many facets of a sculptor who did not limit his work to the medium of sculpture alone. PERSPEKTIVWECHSEL: Guided tour with the daughter of the artist Rudolf Belling 14 SEP, pm In the event series Perspektivwechsel, experts from various disciplines open new perspectives on the artworks in a tour of the exhibition. In addition to art historical contexts, unusual views of the works are of special interest. This discussion series takes place once a month focusing on different parts of our exhibition. Raimund Kummer. Sublunar Interference Exhibition 27 APR 29 OCT 2017 The exhibition Raimund Kummer. Sublunar Interference at Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart Berlin features four large-scale sculptural works from different stages of Kummer s oeuvre. The works, made 11

between 1979 and 2017, address the subject of seeing and are exhibited together for the first time. Any site can be a potential site for art. Raimund Kummer s (b. 1954) interventions in urban space since the 1970s, as well as the forms of presentation that he developed, result from an understanding of art that no longer differentiates between the site of the work s origin and the site where it is made public. Works following up on this temporary installations, sound, staged photographs, sculptures, photographic and filmic works can be ascribed to the starting point of Kummer s work: the Realraum. The title Sublunar Interference is a poetic allusion to the question of light and seeing as possible forms of perception. Interference thus constitutes a notion of action that is set within the cosmic by the attribute sublunar. It denotes art s infinite sphere of activity and the genre-spanning scope of Raimund Kummer s oeuvre. Essential to his sculptures are questions derived from an experimental relationship to material and their resolution in practice, not the theoretical discourse of conceptual drafts. Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) Chausseestraße 128 / 129, Berlin Tue Sun 12 6pm, Thu 12 8pm Harun Farocki Retrospektive Mit anderen Mitteln By Other Means Exhibition 14 SEP JAN 2018 Opening 13 SEP, 6pm Harun Farocki ( ) is one of the most important and internationally influential German filmmakers. His oeuvre comprises more than 100 films and productions: experimental and documentary films; essay, short and feature films. However, his complete works go far beyond this, he has also succeeded internationally as a video and installation artist as well as being a lecturer and media theorist. Farocki was an ethnographer of capitalist living environments, which he intellectually dissected and analyzed. Vital to his approach and his oeuvre is the examination of the meaning of images, their genesis, and, in particular, the power structures inscribed in them. The Harun Farocki Retrospective is a project by Neuer Berlin Kunstverein (n.b.k.) in cooperation with Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art, the Harun Farocki Institute, Harun Farocki GbR, silent green Kulturquartier, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König and Savvy Contemporary as part of the Berlin Art Week, sponsored by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture. n.b.k. Showroom Claire Fontaine Exhibition 14 SEP JAN 2018 Opening 13 SEP, 6pm Claire Fontaine is an artist collective founded in 2004 by Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill, who mainly work with sculpture, installation, painting and video art, as well as text and neon letterings. In their works, Claire Fontaine pursue a political agenda and generally criticize the hegemonic structures and the language of late capitalism. In the context of Claire Fontaine s notion of a ready-made artist, they also challenge the concept of authorship and question the forms of artistic subjectivization on the art market. n.b.k. Facade Alfredo Jaar Exhibition 14 SEP AUG 2018 Opening 13 SEP, 6pm 12

Annually, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) commissions contemporary artists to realize an exterior project on the façade of its building on Chausseestraße, and thus to change the view of the urban space. Working in the public space is deeply rooted in the practice of Alfredo Jaar, who since the beginning of his career has attracted attention with politically motivated actions. His series of graphic diagrams titled Rosa, Karl, Bertolt, Herbert and the others (2017) and designed for the n.b.k. is an homage to Harun Farocki and his critical view on social conditions, and at the same time addresses the varied history of Chausseestraße. Schering Stiftung Unter den Linden 32 34, Berlin Thu Mon 1 7pm Daria Martin: A Hunger Artist Exhibition 14 SEP 10 DEC 2017 Opening 13 SEP, 6pm "A Hunger Artist"(HD, 15 Min) brings together some themes explored in artist Daria Martin's work voyeurism, power relations, the surreal, the artist's myth, and bodily transformations to create her most ambitious work to date: a complex, multi-layered artwork at the intersection of literature, psychology and science. This new moving image work experimentally adapts the modernist masterpiece "A Hunger Artist" by Franz Kafka. "A Hunger Artist" will be Martin s first film shot on HD. Over the past 17 years, Martin s 16mm films aimed to create a continuity between disparate media (such as painting and performance), between people and objects, and between internal and social worlds. Human gesture and seductive imagery meet physically mannered artifice to pry loose viewers learned habits of perception. Subjects such as robots, an archive of dream diaries and close-up card magic, are explored within isolated spaces such as the wings of a theatre, a military academy, or a scaled up modernist sculpture. These protective yet fragmented settings, full of seams and shadows, stand in for the capacities of the film medium itself, a permeable container that consumes and recycles the world at large. Schinkel Pavillon Oberwallstraße 1, Berlin Thu Sun 12 6pm Geoffrey Farmer The Care With Which The Rain Is Wrong Exhibition 17 SEP 12 NOV 2017 Opening 16 SEP, 7pm Using the media of photography, video, sculpture, drawing, and installation, Geoffrey Farmer explores the question of how perception is defined by the specific realm that we see and how everything visual becomes a prop and an agent of memory. In his scenic-narrative installations, objects, and visual conglomerates, Farmer often blurs fiction and (temporary) reality as well as diverging moments of space-time and dimensions. He uses the film and entertainment industries of West Coast cities like Vancouver and Los Angeles and transfers the cinematic to an animism of images and objects. Using light, sound, transformation, and the reproduction of fantastic-real interiors, in his kinetic installations and choreographic collections visual contexts are generated. Farmer often works with the principle of collage when he takes recourse to the classical visual 13

archive, cutting out images and assembling them to large installations. In the framework of Berlin Art Week, Schinkel Pavillon will present two works by the artist. A spatially expansive installation of photographic reproductions of paintings, sculptures from various periods and contexts and made using various materials are assembled to form a collaged cabinet. For the second work Look in my face; my name is Might-have-been; I am also called No-more, Too-late, Farewell, a digital slide show, Geoffrey Farmer compiled a wide range of photographs. Combined with sounds, this work presents a comprehensive depiction of the most various facets of human life as documented by photographers over the past 150 years. VOLKSBÜHNE Berlin Tempelhof Hangar 5 Platz der Luftbrücke 5, Berlin (Open Admission, 20 / 12 ) What do we open up for; What do we close ourselves off from? The Volksbühne is the theatrical embodiment of a city and its divided history. The yardstick of freedom and its absence have always been different here. Driven by a vision of an open, cosmopolitan community we are emphatically dedicated to the founding motto with which the Volksbühne has been advancing the transformation of theatre since the beginning of the 20th century: Art for the people. Do we see ourselves as Germans, Europeans or cosmopolitans that is the question we want to ask. Future versus past, avant-garde versus tradition, spoken theatre versus performance and dance. Thinking in this dialectic of negatively weighted concepts that is not something we are interested in. The Volksbühne is an Urban Theatre without boundaries: Accustomed to historical and aesthetic upheavals it embraces new challenges. It should function like a mem-brane gathering theatre, dance, performance, music, cinema, visual arts and digital cultures under one roof. The emphasis is on Berlin and German photography. Collection Regard is situated in the Mitte district of Berlin and offers, in contrast to classic "white cube" showrooms, a cozy setting. It's a Salon for the like-minded and the curious and aims to provide an immediacy of access to both the work and the collector. "I want to create a space for dialogue and deep engagement with photography. A space people feel they d enjoy returning to often. Berlin is the perfect city for my collection. Both its history and its incredibly fast development are vividly present in everyday life, creating a dynamic field of tensions in which I hope to engage with fellow art and photography enthusiasts. I can t imagine any place better than Berlin than to do just that." Marc Barbey Barbara Wolff - Fotografien. In eigener Sache Ausstellung 8 SEP 8 DEZ 2017 This exhibition presents several key series of photographs by Barbara Wolff in a miniature retrospective of sorts. In doing so, the initiators are picking up the success of the film festival from last year, when artist films at kino international were shown to mark the opening of Berlin Art Week in The main programme of the festival will be shown on Wed., 13 September 2017 at Kino Arsenal at Postdamer Platz. This festival will be dedicated solely to artist films from and about Los Angeles. Parallel to this, an exhibition will be held with works by Margaret Honda, Stephen Prina and Christopher Williams, three artists from Los Angeles who engage with the medium of film in terms of structure. Despite all their differences, Berlin and Los Angeles can both look back at a long film tradition. Both cities share a lively experimental film scene. While in Los Angeles aspects such as light, landscape, Hollywood, and performance play an important role, in Berlin questions of 2

the political, of urban development, migration, and institutional critique are central. Against this backdrop, a comparative look from Berlin at film and video art in Los Angeles is instructive on several levels. The organizers this year once again will offer free admission to all film screenings. This seeks to provide a broad audience access to art films that are otherwise only shown at galleries or fair booths and now on the big screen, with a technically excellent presentation and often for the first time in their genuine format. la > x thus offers an opportunity to see outstanding and rare film works and to participate in the framework of the festival in a vital partnership between the two cities. Founded in 2007, the private collection has its own exhibition building in Düsseldorf, with a total of 3,000 sq.m. available for public presentations. At present, the collection boasts over 700 works by around 200 primarily European and US artists. The various substantive aspects covered by the collection are presented and documented in regular temporary exhibitions and publications. The steadily growing collection concentrates conceptually above all on the moving image in art from the 1960s to the present day and straddles various disciplines: video, single and multiple projections of analog and digital film material, multimedia environments as well as computer and Internet- based installations, but also ephemeral art forms, such as performances. To supplement the main Düsseldorf location, a space was opened to the public in Berlin on 2 June The exhibition area covers a full 3,000 sq.m. and is to be found in Berlin s Mitte district at Leipziger Strasse 60 in the building complex that formerly housed the Czech Cultural Center in East Germany. JAGUARS AND ELECTRIC EELS Exhibition 5 FEB 26 NOV 2017 Between 1799 and 1804 a young naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt ( ), visited the American continent for the first time, making two expeditions. The most adventurous section of his journey was the trip down the Orinoco to the Rio Negro in Venezuela. At the time, his report on this journey laid the foundations for a holistic way of looking at nature one that was way ahead of its time. Von Humboldt was the first researcher to point out how the forces of nature, both animate and inanimate, work together. In 1853, these first chronicles of the New World were published in a special edition entitled Jaguars and electric eels. The largely media-based works on show describe a reality that no longer distinguishes between naturalness and artificiality. 20 Kienzle Art Foundation Bleibtreustraße 54, Berlin Special opening hours Berlin Art Week SEP, 11am 6pm The Kienzle Art Foundation was founded in 2009 and places a special emphasis on bringing art to the public. Its core consists of the art collection of Jochen Kienzle, which includes art from the 1960s until today, from painting to conceptual trends. Important artists in the collection include David Lamelas, Marieta Chirulescu, Verena Pfisterer, Josef Kramhöller, Jack Goldstein, Jonathan Lasker, Gary Stephan, and Franz Erhard Walther. Jochen Kienzle sees himself both as an initiator and a partner of projects fostering artistic outsiders and the rediscovery of forgotten artists and has made a name for himself over the years as an active member of the Berlin art community. As a private art collector, Jochen Kienzle regularly lends his work for exhibition purposes; he also frequently takes part in round table discussions and expert conversations. GARY STEPHAN Exhibition 13 SEP JAN 2018 Opening 16 SEP, 7 9 pm From 13 September 2017 to 13 January 2018, works by the American artist Gary Stephan (b. in Brooklyn in 1942) from the 1970s until today will be shown. For the exhibition GARY STEPHAN a catalogue will be published (German/English) with an essay by Klaus Merkel. The constructed visual spaces of Gary Stephan still possess an immense tension today. After he had participated several times in the Whitney Biennial, the art critic Roberta Smith wrote in 1973 that Gary Stephan s work was among the most closely watched developments of the early 1970s. Today, 50 years later, this statement is still valid: Stephan s work represents a striking rediscovery in comparison to younger artists who question painting. In the art market context, Gary Stephan can be considered a hidden treasure. During the 1980s, Gary Stephan s work was called neo-conceptual, another painterly position with contemporary relevance. A range of group- and soloshows led to the international recognition of Gary Stephan. He has been named together with artists from the New York art scene like Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Ross Bleckner, Peter Halley, Jonathan Lasker, Robert Longo, Olivier Mosset and Philip Taaffe, mostly representd by the Mary Boone Gallery in the 1980 s. The exhibition starts to the point with the transition from the late 1970 s to the 1980 s in New York and initiates an argumentation space for the contemporary art dialogue. 21 KUNSTSAELE BERLIN Bülowstraße 90, Berlin Special opening hours Berlin Art Week Mon Sun SEP, 11am 6pm In 2010 the KUNSTSAELE Berlin was founded as a private initiative by the collector Geraldine Michalke, the collector Stephan Oehmen (until 2015), the gallerist Alexander Hahn, the artist Michael Müller and the curator Ellen Blumenstein. The mission of this diverse coalition is to create a public space for art and cultural exchange in the creative center of the Potsdamer Straße, addressing both the international art public and the locals of the neighborhood. Independent curators are a focal point of the KUNSTSAELE, realizing thematic group shows, monographic solo shows of rediscovered artists as well as exhibitions negotiating selected works from the wide-ranging Collection Bergmeier. Over the past thirty years, the collection of the Berlin and Halle based collector Geraldine Michalke has been continuously growing, ranging from German Informel and Concrete Poetry, through minimalistic and conceptual works of the 1960/70s to contemporary conceptual work. The accompanying programm of artist talks, performances, and collaborative events in the framework of institutions (Berliner Festspiele, Forum Expanded, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf), as initiated by "Salon Populaire" ( ), the discursive project developed by Ellen Blumenstein in the formerly private, bourgeois space, elevated the KUNSTSAELE to the platform of contemporary discourse within the national and international art scene. Nobody Spoke Exhibition 9 SEP 18 NOV 2017 Opening 8 SEP, 7 9pm The exhibition Nobody Spoke by the collaborative artist practice Art & Language marks the culmination of the KUNSTSAELE s examination of artistic practices dedicated to epistemological and performative aspects of art. From the beginning, Art & Language, which has been active in various configurations for almost five decades and is presently carried by Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden, has taken a skeptical stand against certain glorifications that characterize aspects of the historiography of conceptual art in Western Europe and the United States both in the past and today. In addition to new installations with painting-objects, which, within the performance framework of the project called The Jackson Pollock Bar, make the painting debates of the past years look dated, the exhibition also focuses on collaborations with The Red Krayola, the musicians collective organized by Mayo Thompson. Closely connected with the Museum in Baden-Baden, Salon Berlin, under the curatorial direction of Patricia Kamp, presents the diverse aspects of the museum programme and the Frieder Burda Collection. The exhibition space sees itself as a forum for international contemporary art, often referring to the Berlin art scene. Thus the Salon Berlin is both a showroom and a space for experimentation for Museum Frieder Burda. NATHALIE DJURBERG & HANS BERG with works by Willem de Kooning from the Frieder Burda Collection Exhibition 30 JUN 30 SEP 2017 Salon Berlin inaugurates its enlarged galleries with a new presentation that initiates an extraordinary correspondence. The animated films with hypnotic soundtracks and installations of the Berlin-based Swedish artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg (both b. 1978) are shown in dialogue with selections from the late work of Willem de Kooning, a master of abstract expressionism and American postwar art. Djurberg & Berg s dreadful women, seductresses, demons, witches, and overweening mothers are reminiscent of de Kooning s famous Woman cycle from the early 1950s. As in de Kooning, the artistic transformation and deformation of the body brings repressed psychological states to light but the premises are very different: Djurberg employs disfigurement for a very deliberate reflection on stereotypical roles and power relations in a maledominated world. Djurberg & Berg s creative process, like de Kooning s, is informed by intuition, by the immediate and physical engagement with the creative medium. Salon Dahlmann Marburger Straße 3, Berlin Special opening hours Berlin Art Week SEP, 12 6pm The Salon Dahlmann is named after Hildegard Dahlmann, the last owner of the house. The building in Marburger Straße 3 was acquired by the Miettinen family in With the Salon Dahlmann, Timo Miettinen has established a link to Berlin s salon culture tradition, which emerged not far from the direct neighborhood in the area of the Kurfürstendamm in West-Berlin. The Salon presents an eclectic program including a range of different formats: exhibitions, concerts, performances and workshops. The institution is not just a space for cultural meetings and events: The entire house is devoted to the Arts. Annexed to the Salon is a private apartment, beautifully furnished with a combination of German and Finnish design. It hosts a selection of artworks from the Miettinen collection with changing arrangements often in coordination with the temporary exhibitions in the Salon. For the entrance of the building, the Berlin based artist Björn Dahlem has created a permanent light installation entitled Lokale Gruppe. The courtyard of the house accommodates Säulenskulptur, a sculpture by Hans Arp, courtesy of Foundation Arp. The Salon is open to visitors every Saturday and offers guided tours through the exhibition and the yard. 6

Rolf and Erika Hoffmann began acquiring works in the 1960s based on personal interest. Their collection includes works by artists of various generations and nationalities. Due to the proximity of their Mönchengladbach home to Düsseldorf s bustling art scene, the pair first encountered the ideas and works of the German Group ZERO (Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene). Later on, as a consequence of more frequent trips to the U.S., works by American artists (Frank Stella, Bruce Nauman, Mike Kelley, Fred Sandback) were added. Following their 1997 move to Berlin, the Hoffmanns became increasingly interested in Eastern Europe and Asia and acquired works from the likes of Olga Chernysheva (Russia), Fang Lijun (China), Katarzyna Kozyra (Poland) and Hiroshi Sugimoto (Japan). Other artists whose works shape the distinct character of the collection include AKDolven, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bill Beckley, Marcel Broodthaers, Günther Förg, Isa Genzken, Nan Goldin, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Astrid Klein, Sylvia Kolboswki, Georg Herold, François Morellet, Ernesto Neto, Hermann Nitsch, Arnulf Rainer, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Franz West. His collection includes concrete painting, conceptual, media and video art. With the latter he always tries to optimize the handling by means of appropriate equipment and self-developed software. 25 A Visit to SØR Rusche Sammlung Oelde/Berlin Guided tour with collector Thomas Rusche 14, 15 SEP 2017, pm (With registration only) A visit to SØR Rusche Sammlung Oelde/Berlin has become a fixture in Berlin s calendar of art and cultural events. Thomas Rusche gives art lovers, a glass of cool SØR sparkling wine in hand, a personal tour of his private chambers. Contrary to standard white cube perspectives or precisely thought out hangings familiar from the monumental halls, museums, and spaces of art collectors, here you can visit a place where art is lived with: there s a Neo Rauch on the floor leaning against an antique English bookshelf, next to it there s a newcomer like Steven Viezens and from above a landscape of Frans de Momper from the 17th century looks down fondly on the chance arrangement. From the kitchen to the guest bathroom or the bedroom: art can be found everywhere and eagerly awaits discovery by the visitors. With knowledge, elegant humour, and full of passion, Thomas Rusche tells a story about each of his works, sometimes scholarly, sometimes philosophical, sometimes anecdotal, but never forgetting to be the consummate host. The Feuerle Collection Hallesches Ufer 70, Berlin SEP Viewing of the collection with registration only: Admission 18, reduced 11 In The Feuerle Collection, works by international contemporary artists are juxtaposed with Imperial Chinese furniture and ancient Southeast Asian sculptures. Located in a former Second World War telecommunications bunker that has been renovated by the British architect John Pawson, the museum encourages a conversation between different periods and cultures, offering an alternative perception of ancient art and creates a new perspective on the pieces, adopting a synesthetic approach. 27 The squeeze is on! The mechanisms of gentrification associated with the capitalist system are rapidly gaining momentum in the growing metropolis of Berlin. Always more of a quiet village despite its vibrant cultural scene, Berlin has now been almost completely carved up and sold off. And any hard-won creative status is now up for negotiation, as the situation becomes precarious for art-makers who rely on spaces outside of their own living quarters to be able to work. Spaces that are now being taken over by the rich! What kind of activism is advisable? Who must the initiators of project and art spaces convince and with what concepts? Is the job of convincing really their concern? Is every story over at some point? For instance, that of the global capital of independent project spaces and initiatives? Initial indications of a change in policy an Agenda Room dedicated to supporting multidisciplinary work spaces are perhaps a tentative sign of good will. But is the matter really receiving enough attention and support? Or can the urban space only be reclaimed through squatting? It is high time to turn our attention to the question of (free) space Mind the Space let s get down to it! Participants: Dr. Torsten Wöhlert (State Secretary for Culture and Europe, Berlin), Daniela Brahm (artist), Matthias Einhoff (project space operator ZK/U), Tashy Endres (urban researcher), Sebastian Schlüter (Humboldt Universität Berlin, Geography Department), Manfred Kühne (Head of the department for urban Development and Projects, Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing), Host: Bianca Herrling, Conception/co-ordination: Chris Benedict and Matthias Mayer Film screening on the topic of city space 15 SEP, pm Award Ceremony 15 SEP, pm Project Space Party / Performances 15 SEP, starting at 9pm Mind the Space_ spacewithoutspace c/o Kunstpunkt Berlin Schlegelstraße 6, Berlin SEP, 1 7pm Exhibition 15 SEP 1 OCT 2017 Opening 14 SEP, 7pm The Gallery c/o Kunstpunkt Berlin a space for current art was founded by Heinz G. A literary sculpture provides the initial impulse. The poem engraved in the language sculpture s translucent plates, its shadows and reflections allow for multiple interpretations and offer many starting points on the topic Schein und Spiegelung. The goal is to offer an alternative platform for artistic positions across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, video art and performances, music, dance, and literature. Artburst berlin is not linked to any one institution and in this way creates free spaces for the urban zeitgeist in collaboration with project spaces and artists spaces. Hermann Stumpf Performance 16 SEP, 5 9pm Projekt Weißensee a floating white surface with an outboard motor and a boat permit for Berlin s waterways transforms the idea of an urban free space into a concrete space. An area and a vehicle in one, it offers in several senses an opportunity for situational-artistic spatial research. In its aesthetics, the surface of the raft establishes a direct link to a white surface, similar to that of a white sheet of paper, a white canvas, a projection surface in a double sense of the term. The tableaus and scenes that emerge here will develop from experiences and things found in Berlin urban space. To encounter the endemic threat of the Berlin landscape with its disappearing diversity of available spaces and empty lots, the sculptural shape of the raft realizes the non-conformist idea of an urban free space beyond all profit-based use of public space. In an idiosyncratic and thematically complex way, the Weißensee generates an urban spatial experiment in which the Berlin city space is expanded with new plots and possibilities. It is an attempt to withdraw from the controlled use of public space and to define an independent, intentionally autonomous territory that is accessible to all and self-administered. As a performative Intervention in city space, the Weißensee is moved and used on Berlin waterways. Here, the raft serves not just as a projection surface for the dreams, wishes, and perhaps the fears of those remaining on land. It is also a place of communication combined with a transmitter and invites passersby and those sitting on the shore to observe, participate, and join in. Projekt Weißensee is a counter model to the socio-economic control of urban space and the adventure of making it accessible in a playful and egalitarian sense. The Projekt Weißensee will be realised in collaboration with Steef van Lent, Ruben Mühlenbruch, Tine Neumann, Stefan Rechsteiner, Andrea Rinaldi, Adam Slowik, Felix J. H. 38 The ingenious form and unique character of the artworks by Paco Vallejo are based on the emphasis of craft in their creation: knots, weaving, bundles and twists. With cross-references to Analytical Cubism, the realization of a form is always bound to its simultaneously division. It is already split into several perspectives within every single view. The power and debility of a shape is realized on the side of the viewer as well as in the structure of the artwork. Overall these this play of perspective, surface, and space make that the implied ball becomes a globe, and then a world, and thereby representation, construction, and concept coincide with one another. In interaction with Vallejo s art one could think of these moments as interdependent parts of a single process: an attempt to see the world which always implies active engagement. CriticalMassMobil AbBA and ZK/U invite to a Caravan along threatened cultural production 17 SEP, 3pm Collective Performance With this action of the Allianz (bedrohter) Berliner Atelierhäuser (A(b)BA) in collaboration with ZK/U, artists and those who share their concerns point out the spatial needs of Berlin s cultural infrastructure. Against the backdrop of the increasing eventification of our cities, the convoy consists of re-functioned popular tourist infrastructure: a rolling bike bar becomes a discourse bike, where debates on urban policy are held with local radio broadcasts and pirated infoscreens. The action kicks off a workshop format on alternative models for supporting and financing self-administered non-profit studio houses and cultural venues in discussions with important figures from politics, administration, foundations, associations, and initiatives. ZONA DYNAMIC c/o Kunstpunkt Berlin Schlegelstraße 6, Berlin Mind the Space_spacewithoutspace VOYEURS & OWOP Exhibition 15 SEP 1 OKT 2017 Opening 14 SEP, 7pm Mind The Space_raumohneraum will include two ZONA DYNAMIC project series, Voyeurs and One Wall One Piece, which operated in the context of rethinking the art space, as well as occupying public space. The exhibition will showcase a new series of performances set inside the Voyeurs cube, as well as video documentation of the Voyeurs performances that were held throughout Berlin public spaces during the Month of Performance Art-Berlin and a re-contextualization of the One Wall One Piece intervention series in the form of an installation and publication. Voyeurs performers don t act directly in front of the public. They are entrapped within the exhibiting apparatus, a closed white cube of 8m³ (2m by 2m by 2m) from which spectators are excluded. The audience is put in the position to think about their place in the viewing process. They are given the possibility to interact peep, look, touch with the structure separating them from the performer or they can decide not to and surrender their ability to see, possibly letting their other senses take over their experience of the performance. During the Month of Performance Art-Berlin, Voyeurs explored the accidental interactions that can arise from random encounters between the work and its possible audience; thus focusing on the public as the or a performer and the idea of the audience as a canvas for action and reaction. One Wall One Piece is a public intervention series taking place in the urban sphere of Berlin. The artist alone or in collaboration developed an installation on site, in dialogue and synergy with the identity of a specific location. An experiment outside of the white cube gallery objects, walls, the city and an accidental audience. Artists: OWOP - Antoine Fichaux, Guillaume Henry, Lucas Biberson & Tristan Calvignac E. Doxa has been given and taken the right to be perceived one with reasoning and, instead, fell into the realms of the belief. Tones of religious power, meditative states, motivational speeches. Here now, it became a sound, a spoken word on the verge of trance, the singing, the rhythm voices to empower cells and matter. 41 Harun Farocki Retrospective More information Date of information: 1 September 2017 / subject to change Harun Farocki Retrospektive Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) Chausseestraße 128 / 129, Berlin Tue Sun 12 6pm, Thu 12 8pm Harun Farocki ( ) is one of the most important and internationally influential German filmmakers. His oeuvre comprises more than 100 experimental and documentary films, essay, short and feature films. However, his complete oeuvre goes far beyond that. Farocki left behind extensive works of film and media theory, still to be discovered, and for decades worked as a lecturer. Since the mid-1990s, he expanded his cinematic practice with video installations in fine art spaces. Farocki was an ethnographer of capitalist living environments, which he dissected and analyzed. Vital to his approach and his œuvre is the examination of the meaning of images, their genesis, and, in particular, the power structures inscribed in them. In order to pay tribute to the significant oeuvre of Harun Farocki, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), in cooperation with Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art, the Harun Farocki Institute, Harun Farocki GbR, Savvy Contemporary, Silent Green Kulturquartier, and Buchhandlung Walther König, as part of Berlin Art Week, initiated the first comprehensive retrospective of Farocki s work. Sponsored by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe. Neuer Berliner Kunstverein is showing the exhibition Harun Farocki: Mit anderen Mitteln By Other Means, which assembles his film installation works. Simultaneously the first retrospective of Harun Farocki s complete cinematographic work takes place at the Arsenal Cinema. Dedicated to the question about the influence and permanence of Farocki s aesthetic and intellectual practice is the event Farocki Now: A Temporary Academy, organized by the Harun Farocki Institute, taking place on several days at Silent Green Kulturquartier, with an opening event at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (18 21 October 2017). Savvy Contemporary develops the group exhibition El Usman Faroqhi Here and a Yonder On Finding Poise in Disorientation, with Candice Breitz, Ariani Darmawan, Fehras Publishing Practices, Shilpa Gupta, Ho Tzu Nyen, Samson Kambalu, Olaf Nicolai, and Michael Zheng. Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne publishes a multi-volume edition of the writings by Harun Farocki, the first volume being the previously unpublished autobiography. The Harun Farocki Retrospective is accompanied by an extensive lecture programme and the educational programmes Großes Kino, Kleines Kino and Arsenal Filmatelier. Artistic directors: Marius Babias and Antje Ehmann Curators: Antonia Alampi, Carles Guerra, Tom Holert, Doreen Mende, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, Volker Pantenburg, and Stefanie Schulte Strathaus

Mit anderen Mitteln By Other Means Exhibition 14 SEP JAN 2018 Opening 13 SEP, 6pm The exhibition Harun Farocki: Mit anderen Mitteln By Other Means at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) combines works by Harun Farocki, which deal with the logic of cinema films are quoted and their visual languages are analysed. For instance On Construction of Griffith Films (2006) deals with the montage principles of the early films by D. W. Griffith, whereas the 6-channel video installation Feasting or Flying (2008) examines the motif of male suicide in fictional film. The 5-channel video installation War Tropes (2011), however, brings together key motifs of the war film genre, and Dubbing (2006) is dedicated to the effects of the translation of films. In the predominantly multi-channel installations soft montage is used, which is key to Farocki s work: the images are assembled not only in succession, but also in juxtaposition. The soft montage is also transferred to the exhibition space where the works are not shown separately in black boxes, but in a way that allows it to look at them together and in comparison. 43 Artist Films at Kino Arsenal More information Date of information: 1 September 2017 / subject to change la > x los angeles artists in berlin film festival and exhibition Kino Arsenal, Potsdamer Straße 2, Berlin Film Festival Wednesday, 13 SEP 2017, 10am 10pm, free admission To mark the 50-year city partnership between Berlin and Los Angeles, film curator Marc Glöde and collector Axel Haubrok are putting together a film festival and exhibition under the name la > x which focuses on artistic viewpoints from Los Angeles. Berlin and Los Angeles, seen in an international context, are significant sites of artistic production and have for decades counted as two of the most influential cities for discussions on art. What could be more suitable, from a Berlin point of view, than using this year s anniversary as a framework for looking at artists from L.A. and presenting them to a Berlin audience during and after Berlin Art Week? The kick-off event is the exhibition opening at Fahrbereitschaft on September 12, Works from Stephen Prina and Christopher Williams will make up the focal point of the exhibition. The 14-part work monochrome painting by Prina will be on display, an art work on the history of monochrome painting. The works shown by Christopher Williams will focus on ephemera, invitations, texts, and posters all point to other works of the artist. Two of Margaret Honda s works build a bridge to the la > x film festival. Honda developed a new film Fahrbereitschaft, especially for the exhibition venue. On September 13, 2017 the la > x film festival follows the bridge built by Honda and presents a day s worth of films from L.A. artists, as well as productions where L.A. is the central point of interest. The film festival, curated by film scholar Dr. Marc Glöde will be shown at the Kino Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art, showcasing works from Edgar Arceneaux, John Baldessari, James Benning, Morgan Fisher, Alex Hubbard, Rodney McMillian, Sarah Morris, Ryan Trecartin and Jennifer West. The programme also shows Berlin and L.A. as sister cities who despite their differences, look back on a long and broad film tradition, reaching from mainstream-cinema to artistic experimental films which are the main focus of this program. Themes span the spectrum of historic to current structural positions, and from aspects of film material to gender issues. The film presentations will be complemented by discussions. At 9pm, the concept artist, filmmaker and musician Stephen Prina will bring the programme to an end with a concert on the cinema stage. Exhibition Margaret Honda, Stephen Prina, Christopher Williams 15 SEP 2 DEC 2017 Fahrbereitschaft, Herzbergstraße 40-43, Berlin Opening 12 SEP, 7 9pm (visit on Saturdays from 3pm, pre-registration at visit@haubrok.org) Special Opening Hours Berlin Art Week: 15 SEP, 7 9pm, SEP, 12 6pm without registration

As a modern energy services provider, we not only supply the city with natural gas and green electricity, but also offer innovative energy supply concepts. As a true Berlin company, we feel obliged to actively take social responsibility. A major focus of our commitment is the encouragement for arts and culture. We are convinced that these elements are the expression of a vibrant, creative, and open urban society. Hence the arts are a significant part of what keeps Berlin attractive and exciting. Accordingly, we are very pleased to support the Berlin Art Week in 2017 for the first time. This event, which attracts artists and visitors from across the globe, is an ideal addition to the existing portfolio of cultural events and institutions that we promote. By supporting the Art Week, we are contributing to artists gaining an audience also outside the federal state boundary, while strengthening Berlin s status as a location for arts and culture. For a long time, we have been taking responsibility for the cultural sector.
