It s Time For You To Get the Real Facts About Breast Enhancement But before making a decision if breast augmentation is right for you it s important to get all the facts. You need to understand the breast structure, the procedure, the risks and the benefits. The Breast s Structure And Shape The breast is made up of fatty, glandular and fibrous tissues. The breast s size and shape is influenced by skin elasticity, genetics, past pregnancies, and age. Also, some women have differences in size or shape between right and left breasts, which is called asymmetry. Beneath the breast is the pectoralis major muscle. Breast implants are placed either under or over this muscle. The Implant Breast implants come in many shapes and sizes. The outer material usually consists of a soft, flexible shell of silicone. These are filled with saline (sterile salt water). Since saline naturally makes up the human body, if there is a leak the salt water is safely absorbed into the body. Silicone implants are still available for select women. However in 1992 the FDA greatly restricted the use of silicone filled implants even though there was never any documented links to harmful health problems associated with silicone. Implant Shapes You can choose between round or naturally contoured implant shapes. Round implants seem to result in more cleavage and a

4 fuller shape. While contoured implants are designed to provide a more anatomical shape to the breasts. Together, you and I will decide on the best option for your body. How Is The Procedure Done? The procedure itself is quite simple and safe. The incision for the implant is made in one of three sites: Under the arm (transaxillary incision) in the armpit area. Around the areola, or the darker colored part of the nipple (periarelor incision). This usually makes the incision scar to become nearly invisible. Within the breast fold (inframammary incision). The incision scar is concealed under the fold of the skin under the breast. I generally prefer the under the breast crease incision because it is more sterile and invisible than the nipple or the armpit. Since the implant is typically inserted empty and then filled you get the benefit of the smallest possible incision. Working through this incision, your breast tissue is lifted to create a pocket for implant placement. Implant Placement Breast implant placement can be done either under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular), on top of the muscle and between the breast tissue (subglandular). Depending on your particular circumstances you can decide on placement during your consultation. Typically surgery will take about one to three hours to complete. This is a very straightforward procedure. Breast enhancement can successfully give you the fuller, firmer, more beautiful breasts you ve longed for. So let me share with you the most common questions I get from patients considering breast enhancement surgery: Q. How Much Pain is There? A. The majority of our patients choose general anesthesia so you will sleep through the entire surgery. Afterwards you will be given muscle relaxants and pain killers to help alleviate discomfort. Most likely you ll feel tired and sore for a few days after the surgery. Your breasts may also feel tender, swollen and sensitive when directly contacted for up to one month. Q. What Are the Possible Risks or Complications? A. As with any surgery there are certain risks. And it is important that you are fully aware of all possibilities. A small percentage of women develop a post-operative infection. For some cases this may mean that the implant will be removed until the infection clears.

6 Another possible complication is capsular contraction. This occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant tightens, causing the breast to feel hard. Also, implant leakage occurs in approximately 3% of surgeries. If the saline-filled (salt water) implant breaks, it will deflate within a few hours and the salt water will harmlessly be absorbed by the body. Other possible complications are changes in nipple or breast sensation (usually disappear with time), shifting of the implant, and difficulty with mammogram readings. Q. What About The Scarring? A. Since your implants will be inserted through a small incision there will be a scar. However, breakthrough techniques are making the incision difficult to notice in any implant site you choose. I prefer to perform the incision at <<your choice here>> because <<reason>>. Q. How Do I Pick The Right Size Implant? A. The right size implant to complement your body depends on your height, weight and body type. Depending on how elastic your breast tissue is you can increase your bra size several cup sizes. During your consultation you can feel and try-on different size implants to see the result. Q. What Can I Expect After My Surgery? A. Post-operative care is quite simple. Usually you ll be required to wear a special bra or jog bra during the healing process for added support. Sutures come out after about 10 days. You can usually return to work within 3-7 days. And you can resume strenuous activity in about 3-6 weeks Q. How Much Does The Procedure Cost? A. The cost varies depending on the type of implants, the location of the procedure and the procedure being done. Without a careful examination during your consultation it would be impossible to give you an estimate of the cost. However, our
