2 This Chinese New Year heralds the arrival of the Year of the Dog. People born in 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, and 2018 will fall under this zodiac sign, and some famous people who share this zodiac birthday are Winston Churchill, Mother Theresa, Bill Clinton, Elvis Presley, Steven Spielberg, Madonna and Li Yuan (the first emperor of the Tang Dynasty ). People born in the Year of the Dog are usually independent, sincere, loyal and decisive. They are not afraid of challenges in daily life. These positive characteristics mean they have many harmonious relationships. Lucky numbers for dog people are said to be 3, 4 and 9 or combinations of these numbers; lucky colours are red, green and purple; and lucky flowers are roses and cymbidium orchids. 3 EXHIBITIONS Jiang Hongsheng Tuesday 9 January Sunday 18 February Open Monday Friday 8am-5pm Saturday 9am 5pm Sunday 10am 5pm Wallner Gallery, Lakeside Arts Admission free Chinese brush painting began around 4000 BC and has developed continuously over six thousand years, reflecting changes in time and social conditions. In early stages Chinese painting was related closely to other crafts from pottery to the decorative inscriptions on bronzes, carved jade and lacquerware. Flower and bird painting separated from decorative arts around the 9 th century, becoming an independent genre during the Song Dynasty, often focusing on plum blossoms, bamboo, and chrysanthemums. All scrolls on display are available for sale and were created by Jiang Hongsheng, winner of a National Golden Prize for Chinese painting and founder of the Red Peony Academy, Ningbo. Ye Funa, Ping Pong Stream, 2017 Ye Funa: From Hand to Hand Saturday 17 February Sunday 4 March Exhibition Launch: Friday 16 February Nottingham Contemporary Admission free Ye Funa s practice is concerned with the boundaries between daily life and contemporary art. For From Hand to Hand, Ye will produce a new episode in her online Peep-Stream series, addressing society s current desire to display ourselves. The final video will be embedded in an immersive installation that converts the gallery into a nail salon. Here, nails become the exhibition space through which Ye artificially reforms the natural extremities of the body. This exhibition is part of NOW: A Dialogue on Female Chinese Contemporary Artists, in collaboration with CFCCA, HOME, Turner Contemporary, MIMA and Tate.

4 CHINESE LANGUAGE FILM FOLLOWED BY PANEL DISCUSSION Still Life (2006) Director Jia Zhang-Ke Introduced by Shiying Liu Thursday 25 January, 1pm 110 minutes Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts 5 ( 3 concessions) Free to University of Nottingham students Cert 15 (includes strong language) Set against the spectacular landscape of the Three Gorges region, Jia Zhangke s humane and moving Golden-Lion winner tells two contemplative and compassionate stories of a man and a woman searching for absent spouses in Fengjie, an ancient town on the Yangtze River which is being demolished and will soon vanish for ever in the flooding caused by the controversial Three Gorges hydroelectric dam project. This film was selected in partnership with the University of Nottingham s Institute for Screen Industries Research (ISIR) from the BFI s top ten Chinese language films (with English subtitles) from the 21 st century. It will be presented with an introduction by Shiying Liu, a student from the University of Nottingham s Department of Culture, Film and Media.
