2 A WARM WELCOME TO COLEMANS 2017 ANNUAL CHAROLAIS BULL SALE 2017 SUMMER DRYWEATHER HAS THE SAME MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS AS FORTUNATELY FOR US WE HAD TWO GOOD PREVIOUS SUMMERS AND WERE ABLE TO BUILD UP A BANK OF BAELAGE WHICH IS NOW BEEN FED OUT. LIKE SOME OTHER BREEDERS WE SOLD OUR NORMAL CROSSBRED WEANERS SIX WEEKS EARLY TO PROTECT THE CAPITAL STOCK ESPECIALLY THE CALVES AND YEARLING CATTLE. THE MARCH RAINFALL OF 170 MLS OVER THREE DAYS WILL CERTAINLY KICK- START THE AUTUMN GROWTH. ALL OUR HERD SIRES PRESENTED ARE JOINED TO OUR CROSSBRED COWS TO PROVE CALVING EASE, BEFORE STUD USE. WE HAVE SOME BULLS BY A NEW AB SIRE CEDARDALE TYRANT 31 T WHO IS NOT DOUBLE POLLED BUT SCURRED WHICH HAS BEEN PASSED ON IN SOME CASES. HE IS WELL WORTH A LOOK, HE HAS THE LOWEST BIRTH WEIGHT RECORDED IN CANADA. WEIGHING AND TAGGING CALVES AT BIRTH AS SEEN ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE HAS PROVEN A SUCCESS FOR US. THIS YEARS BULLS, CONDITION-WISE, STILL HAVE SOME CATCHING UP, BUT THEY WILL RESPOND WHEN THE FEED COMES AWAY. UP UNTIL NOW THE KIKUYU HAS BEEN DORMANT BECAUSE OF THE DRY WEATHER. REGARDS THE COLEMAN FAMILY LILY, HINARI, RICHARD & JOHN Calf weighing crate, used for more accuracy Catching(?), tape measuring for weight and tagging for identification of newborn calves at the same time can be challenging. We have simplified the exersize with the use of a weighing crate which has an entry/exit at both ends. The crate itself is an attention diversion for some motherly dams. More accurate results t have been achieved with less physical effort required by the operator or catcher. 3 4
