Educated at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, she has taught and exhibited her work for the past thirty plus years. Currently Nancy teaches workshops and conducts demonstrations using her inner painting Techniques and fundamentals of alcohol inks on tiles. Nancy Christy-Moore has held over 20 solo exhibits, with 2 in Japan over the past 37 years. She welcomes creative commissions. Included in many private and corporate collections, her paintings have been exhibited in museums, public spaces and as limited edition prints for the Hyatt Regency Hotel chain. She was cover artist featured in the 2011 Summer Edition of Horses in Art magazine and in 2012 was selected Official Artist for the Menlo Charity Horse Show in Menlo Park, CA. Paint companies also have differences in their tube colors. But now we will talk about tube colors (TC) similarities and differences and why you need to know some of these facts. These colors are ones that we use a lot. There are a couple which you may not have in your paint box. One is Rose Madder, the other is Manganese Blue. Burnt Umber: dark brown, opaque, pushes towards yellow, coolish tan VanDyke Brown: dark brown, transparent, with a slightly red cast. Warmer than Burnt Umber. Alizerin Crimson: dark cool red, transparent, makes great darks when mixed with other darks. This is a very important paint you need on your palette. It is Not pleasing when mixed with just white. Rose Madder: on the palette, it looks like Aliz. Cr. It has brown in it and is much warmer than Aliz. Cr. Pleasing in landscapes Thalo Red Rose and Permanent Rose can be very similar. It depends upon the manufacturer. They are both transparent and cool, and are indispensable when painting florals. Pick your favorite. Yellow Ochre: strong yellow, usually opaque and warm. good in mixtures with other colors Raw Sienna: looks similar to yellow ochre on the palette, but it is usually transparent and much warmer than YO and works very well in landscapes. Indian Yellow: wonderful bright yellow. Transparent, and warm. Take advantage of its transparency. Blues are tricky. Ultramarine Blue (light and dark), Permanent Blue, French Ultramarine are all similar, and all are warm and are generally transparent. Very important and usable blue for your palette. Thalo Blue, Prussian Blue, Manganese Blue and Cerulean Blue have great similarities between them. Thalo Blue: transparent, cool, makes wonderful blacks mixed with other colors, Very Powerful, a little goes a long way. Almost always needs toning down with other colors. Prussian Blue: transparent, very dark, good in landscapes, pushes towards warm. Manganese Blue: powerful blue, semi-transparent, great in winter scenery, can be used in place of Cerulean Blue. Cerulean Blue: opaque, good sky blue, stands well next to other blues. Very cool. So, Artists: Now you can have fun investigating these colors. Take time to play with a color and get to know what it does. The real test comes when you mix them with OTHER colors. Just remember, don t mix them with more than one other color at a time. If you do, you will probably get MUD! 3 Issue 143 October 2017 President s Message Page 3 Greetings! We had a great September meeting. We celebrated with Richard in appreciation of all he has done for our association The demo was great and the food was good. My granddaughter really had fun with the green icing on Richard s cake. We are looking forward to October and our exhibit in November. We also have the exhibit in December at the main Peoria Library. If anyone has time I thought we might get creative and do something small and Christmassy to exhibit. It would add to the holiday spirit and be something fun, too. Just a thought! Mary Ellen Goodyear Arts of Culture Expo If we have artists that are interested in displaying and selling their work,, on October 14th we will have a table set up At the Expo. It is at the Goodyear Community Park, 3151 N. Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, Az. It is from 4 p.m.. -9.p.m. There is no fee PFAA will get 10% of any sale. There will be several art groups there, including Wham. If you would like to exhibit and sell at this expo please let Patti or Mary Ellen know. Our numbers are written below. IIf you have not paid yet, please do so by the next meeting. WE NEED YOUR HELP Because of uncontrollable circumstances, Cheri Stucke will no longer be able to do the newsletter or web page. 4 1 How to Find Us If you re coming from the 101, avoid confusion of the Grand Avenue intersection by exiting at Olive Avenue and go north on 83rd. Stay to the left on 83rd when you intersect with Cotton Crossing. The community center is 2 blocks south of Peoria at 83rd Avenue. There is an entrance to the Community Center Building off of Jefferson. The address of the center is 8335 W Jefferson St., Peoria, AZ GPS will get you there! Artists of the Month BARBARA BLACK THIRD PLACE JANE BROWN FIRST PLACE BILL MARTIN SECOND P LACE Guidelines for Artist of the Month This event is held monthly, September through April, and Open to all members of PFAA. Limit is one framed work of art object each month. Artist awarded Artist of the month are not eligible for further competition in the yearly cycle. All Artist of the Month are automatically entered in the Artist of the Year Event held at our last meeting of the year. Artist of the Year will then be chosen from the submissions that won Artist of the Month. If the awarded work has been sold, you may substitute another work for the May event.
