2 Overview Level 1 3Credits Through this unit you will learn how to carry out face painting on a model or mask. You will learn how to create a mood board to help you develop your ideas based on a theme. You will learn how to prepare yourself, the model or mask and your work area for the face painting application. You will learn about the different products and skills used to apply face paint as well as how to apply them in order to create your planned designs. Guided Learning Hours (GLH) 30 2 UBT1

4 What you must learn This section provides you with guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to achieve this unit. Learning outcome 1 Know how to perform face painting techniques to a model or mask Create a mood board for a 2D design showing the development of the design Choose a theme for the design: Designs animals, insects, fantasy characters. Skin colour light, medium, dark. Tools pictures, magazines, photographs, books, board, glue, scissors, drawing pencils. Select products for the design brief Products: Non-toxic water-based face paints, glitter, gems, transfers, water. Tools: Palettes, cotton wool, face paint remover, cleansing wipes, tissues, sponges, various types of brushes/applicators, stamps, stencils. Equipment: Chair, desk or table of suitable height, mood board, face template design. 4 UBT1
5 Identify any problems that may happen during face paint application Examples of possible problems and solutions: Face paint not sticking to the mask check that the mask was clean and free from oil, make-up/face paint and dirt. Clean, dry and start again. Lines or design not cleanly applied remove face paint from area carefully and reapply to improve the overall effect. Allergic reation (severe erythema, severe swelling, stinging, eye watering, skin irritation) application of cold compress, refer to doctor if necessary, recording of reaction, action and referral on client record card. Product in the eye use an eyebath to flush the eyes, seek medical advice. Unhappy with final result remove with a suitable remover. If the client tells you they have a sensitive skin, a skin test of the products may need to be carried out to prevent a reaction from occurring during the application of face paint. Learning outcome 2 Be able to perform face painting techniques to a model or mask Prepare yourself and your work area for face painting Prepare yourself: Clean ironed clothes, flat closed-in shoes, no jewellery, no piercings, hair (neatly tied back, fringe secured), light day make-up, personal hygiene and cleanliness (shower/bath, cover cuts and abrasions, deodorant or antiperspirant), good oral hygiene (clean teeth, fresh breath), no nail enhancements, clean and short natural nails. Prepare work area: Clean and hygienic, good lighting, covering for table or trolley, no obstructions, tools and equipment in a safe working position for the beauty therapist. Prepare products, tools and equipment: Products non-toxic water-based face paints, brush cleaner/sanitiser, glitter, gems, transfers, water. Tools mood board materials, 2D face template, spatula, palettes, cotton wool, face paint remover, cleansing wipes, tissues, sponges, various types of brushes/applicators. Equipment training head, make-up masks (light, medium and dark skin tones) stencils, stamps, stool or chair, trolley/work surface, lined bin. UBT1 5
6 What you must learn Use hygienic and safe methods of working Hygiene: Sterilise and sanitise tools, disinfect work surfaces, lay products and tools onto couch roll, sanitise your hands before and after applying face paint, dispense products with a spatula, pump or spray, use disposable applicators wherever possible, replace lids securely on bottles and pots, dispense face paint onto a palette, do not double dip brushes and applicators. Prepare the model or mask and apply your 2D design with face paint Preparing the model or mask for basic face-paint application: Mask preparation clean the mask making sure to remove any dirt, old make-up/face paint and excess grease. Model preparation protect client s clothing, place a headband on your client, ask your client to remove any earrings, ensure that your client is comfortable, ensure that your client is positioned correctly. Technique for basic face paint application: Base preparation mix face paint to create the correct base colour for the mask. Design detail apply face paint using brushes, sponges, stencils, stamps, and glitter to complete your design brief. 6 UBT1

You correctly prepared the model or mask for face painting. You used the correct techniques for all application purposes. You achieved a precise and thorough application. You explained all findings in a manner the assessor could easily understand (where appropriate).
