The juror of the exhibit this year was Robert Copple, an accomplished artist who graduated from Cornell University with a major in both painting and photography and a minor in ornithology/biology/fields studies. Copple states that his greatest aspiration as a contemporary artist is to act as an advocate for Mother Nature by creating living moments on canvas that will resonate with and inspire the viewer to adventure out into nature. In commenting on the show, he said, I was really pleased to see such beautiful diverse approaches to creating artistic interpretation of nature. The prize winners of the Wildlife in Art Show-2013 are: 1 st - Marla Epstein- Above & Beyond (oil - shown above) 2 nd - Bonnie Rinier- Alaskan Gray Wolf (watercolor) 3 rd - Mirjam Schippers- Breakfast (watercolor)

Page 2 Footnotes December 2013 President's message: Congratulations to the winners of the Small Image Show: 1st Place-'Apples' by Karen Howard 2nd Place-'Jarvie by Carolyn Teincuff 3rd Place-'Fleeting Mood' by Sandra Hayen Foothills has another wonderful Wildlife in Art Show and many thanks to the Wildlife Committee: Billie Mear, Marilyn Grame, Marla Cook, Bobbe Tatreau plus Deb/Lee Atkinson for running the People's Choice Award on reception day. Foothills wishes to thank the (few) members who turned out for the gallery cleaning and painting: Bonnie Andrews, Cathy Christopher, Mary Laurino, Margaret Schwab, Marie Turkle, and the dynamic window washing duo of Carol McClure and Carolyn Teincuff. Please thank them all and include the hanging committee for another great show. Foothills has had a very successful fundraiser in the art supply table and donation box. It generated $318. Thanks to Bonnie Andrews, Bob Kelsch, and anyone who donated supplies for the supply table. It is hard to believe that December is rapidly approaching. The December 5 th meeting will be dedicated to a fundraiser. There will be affordable art for sale and silent auction items, plus it will be great socializing opportunity. Please join us. (And remember, it is an afternoon meeting beginning at 1:00 pm.). Foothills is losing long-term member Bob Kelsch to the wilds of Utah. Bob has served in many board positions, including President, and on many committees. He most recently served on the hanging committee. Our best wishes go with him. Diane Ludwig, President A reminder to members: The December meeting begins at 1:00 pm on Thursday the 5 th and will be a funfilled social event. Mark your calendar and plan to come! ART IS A GIFT A Fundraising Sale to Benefit the Foothills Art Association There will be a fundraising sale titled Art is a Gift during the month of December at the gallery. A portion of the gallery will be allocated for the sale while the December Show will exhibit as usual. The artwork for the fundraiser will be priced at $50 or under. Proceeds of the sale will benefit Foothills. Pieces not sold will be returned to the artist. Members contributions of artwork to the fundraiser will be greatly appreciated. Artwork may be handed in on December 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th For more information contact, Cathy Christopher at (619) or christ2@cox.net

Page 3 Footnotes December 2013 December Featured Artist Jean Waters Jean Waters, the Foothills December Featured Artist, says, My love of pattern and texture is quite evident in the abstract collages. Once I have decided on the color harmony and a compositional device (grid, cruciform, etc.), I am free to work spontaneously, intuitively, and experimentally She says that she has a great deal of fun in the process. But, at the same time, an important concern to Jean is to achieve a strong value structure of lights and darks as well as unity, harmony, and balance. In working towards this goal, Jean hopes that my art uplifts the spirit and shows the joy that I feel in creating it. Jean knew at the age of eight that she wanted to be an artist, but she was guided into becoming a teacher by parents and teachers. Later, after receiving a Master s Degree in Librarianship, she worked as a law firm librarian. Finally, she was able to pursue her love of art fulltime. In 2002, she joined the San Diego Watercolor Society and the Foothills Art Association. She began exhibiting her art and winning awards in both associations. In April 2009, her Rhythm and Blues was awarded 1 st Place at Foothills. For several years, Jean painted in a realistic manner and was known particularly for her cat portraits. She liked to say that she painted every hair on the cat. However, carpal tunnel syndrome in 2007 brought an end to her use of pen and ink in cat painting. Recently, she has collaged cat portraits. After viewing a Watermedia Collage Workshop DVD by Carrie Burns Brown, Jean began working with collage using oriental papers which she paints and decorates with acrylics and carved stamps which she carves herself. She uses her own papers and stamps in collage so that the artwork will be both archival and original. Jean invites everyone to an Artist s Reception Saturday, December 14 th (2:00-4:00 pm) at the Foothills Porter Hall Gallery

Page 4 Footnotes December 2013 Member News, Activities, Events, and Programs Marilyn Grame says, Another stellar Wildlife Show! There are so many people to thank for helping get this show on the road. First and foremost, thanks to Chairman Billie Mear who managed, while suffering with an illness, to obtain all the wonderful awards, to engage our fine juror Robert R. Copple, and to coordinate everything. We had a great crowd, and Carolyn Tiencuff s committee saw that they were well fed with all the wonderful food items provided by our members for the potluck. The hanging committee presented the paintings beautifully, and our gallery looked fresh thanks to all who cleaned and painted. The floral arrangements that were placed throughout the gallery added to the beauty of the evening. Thanks to Sky Hunters (Raptor Education & Rehabilitation) for being so faithful. Debbie and Lee Atkinson took over the sale of raffle tickets, and they donated the People s Choice Award. The special awards were donated by Susan Salazar and Teresa Ross, Grace Schlesier, Marilyn Grame, Lyn Robinson, and Carolyn Tiencuff. Once again, we were pleased to award the Special Barbara McDermott Memorial Award in honor of the dear lady who started this show 24 years ago. Thanks to Marla Cook, who created the programs, certificates, and obtained the ribbons. There are so many to thank and you all know who you are. Without you, we would not have such a successful show. Special thanks to our President Diane Ludwig who was always there. And, a special thanks to jewelry-designer, Danielle Pedersen (handymaiden.com) and to the young artist Aimee Wright for their help in creating the five super-fabulous window displays for the Wildlife Show. The "hanging" committee also extends a special thank you to Margaret Schwab and Marie Turkle for the beautiful arrangements and decorations they added to an already beautiful wildlife show. Cathy Christopher reminds us about Art is a Gift, the fundraising sale at the gallery during the month of December. Artists can drop off their donations to the fundraiser on December 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th during gallery hours. The fundraising sale will begin at the members meeting/social on Thursday, December 5 th (1:00 pm) and continue during the month. Bob Kelsch has generously donated nearly a dozen portraits and landscapes in oil and acrylic (with Margaret Schwab contributing matting and framing). The Art is a Gift sale is a great opportunity for artists to clean house and help the gallery by donating at least one piece for the sale. It can be large or small and unframed is okay. Anita Shaw will be having a "first" showing of her new series of acrylic Folk Art (20 paintings), and also will be showing her original watercolor flower paintings that appear in her new book "Always Flowers" which she will be signing -- all at Unicorn Books & Gifts (738 Main Street, Ramona). She invites everyone to the "Open House" on Saturday, November 16th (3-5 pm.). (continued on page 5) (Shown above: Alaskan Gray Wolf by Bonnie Rinier and Breakfast by Mirjam Schippers)

Page 5 Footnotes December 2013 Member News (continued from page 4) Dottie Hayes thanks everyone who went to the San Diego Watercolor Society in September and voted for her painting, "Sea Fantasy". It won the "People s Choice Award" and she say's "Yipppeee! And, money!!!" The painting was also accepted into the Foothills' Wildlife in Art show. Karen Howard has been elected a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. Gallery Manager, Bonnie Andrews, reminds us that membership in Foothills Art Association has benefits and responsibilities which each member needs to address. There are many ways to support the gallery. Many members serve as officers or committee members, donate refreshments, and support fund raisers. All members are required to sit the gallery as a requirement of membership as stated in the bylaws unless health issues or work schedules make this difficult. When members do not share in sitting the gallery, some days the gallery is closed. This make it difficult for our association to meet our obligation with the City of La Mesa and isn't good public relations. I would ask each member to meet this obligation monthly. We have no paid employees and we are dependent on volunteers to keep the gallery open five days a week. If each member would volunteer only 2-1/2 hours a month, we could easily staff the gallery. Please step up and volunteer to help the association s gallery. Minutes of General Meeting November 7, 2013 Submitted by Tom Kilroy, Recording Secretary President Diane Ludwig opened the meeting at 6:45 welcoming all. Minutes of October meeting was approved as written. Treasurer's report is available for review. Diane gave out the "Small Image Show" awards. A "Gas Card Gift" was given to Bob Kelsch as he is leaving us after being a member for so many years. Committee Reports: Programs/Web Site - Hazel - Our December meeting will be at 1:00 and it will be a Christmas Pot Luck. This will also be the day for our "Art is a Gift". The maximum price for any painting will be $50.00; January will be the talented Sarah Stieber; February will be Fusion Glass, with an opportunity the 2nd Thursday of the month to create a pendant at their workshop; in March, Hazel will be our demo artist with her outstanding "Understanding Color" seminar. The Web Site is doing fine, see Hazel if you want to get on it. Exhibits - Cathy - Our "ART IS A GIFT" will be a "cash and carry" event, and the money we make from it will be donated to the Foothills Art Association La Mesa. One can bring in paintings for this event on the 3 rd, 4 th or 5 th of December. Gallery - Bonnie/Margaret - We still need a few "sitters" for the month of November. Wild Life Show - Billie Diane (Billie is still ill) - The show is up, please consider purchasing raffle tickets Hospitality - Please help us by bringing in some "finger food" for our Wild Life Show reception on November 9 th. Old Business: None New Business: The movable display walls have been painted - discussion at further meetings of re-painting or recovering them. Meeting Adjourned at 7:01 Hazel introduced Robert Milberg, who gave us an excellent seminar on Composition and Design. Bob is the one who helped us design our Art Gallery.

Page 7 Footnotes December 2013 Let s Discuss Painting Art and Human Development by Bob Pinter A psychologist named Abraham Maslow proposed that human personality and lifestyles fall into distinct stages. These stages begin at the most primitive or concrete level and progress to an advanced or abstract level. It may be argued that it is unfair to claim that one stage is superior to another; however civilization does seem to progress from simple to complex, concrete to abstract. Maslow's stages can be applied to individuals as well as cultures, and applied to artistic styles as well as commerce. The first stage - Survival - describes a hunting-gathering culture, living hand to mouth, never knowing where the next meal will come from. At this stage a person would have little concern art unless he was to steal and sell it. I believe some homeless people show a level of art in the placard they offer as advertisement. The next stage - Security - describes the desire to secure one's livelihood and home. Cave art, hunting rituals and rain dances can be understood as motivated to secure a hopeful outcome in an uncertain environment. Investing in art today would come from this same motive. Thirdly - Belonging - is an expression of group cohesion. Today's tattoo art and body piercing is a way of signaling that one belongs to the "new" mentality (one might call it the street gang mentality.) Wealthy individuals may collect and display known artists as a way of demonstrating their social class. As a much younger man, I displayed Tibetan icons on the wall because I was involved with others studying that practice; at the time I had no appreciation for the art or for Buddhism. Achievement is the next stage one must attain in order to advance along this continuum. At this stage, one has a comfortable life with home, income, friends, and a secure future, and so is drawn to achieve something more, perhaps a better house, a higher status, or successful children. In our art, we may desire recognition by entering contests and striving for that "best in show". Or, we may simply wish to improve on technique, to see an improvement in our craft. This is the stage where craft remains but true art progresses. The final stage - Self Actualization - is what draws us to art in the first place, an inspiration, a pull toward transcendence, a revelation of a new experience. At this stage, one seeks to break the rules of the past and convention. This is the struggle we face by making a painting new and fresh, not a repetition of the last one. It is a place where an idea or epiphany may not fit previously adopted styles. Famous artists are known as forsaking worldly comforts in their commitment to a unique vision. But even the average art enthusiast can experience moments of self-actualization. According to Maslow, to experience art on this higher level one must be confident in the four preceding stages and, therefore, less concerned about them. According to me, it's enough to have self-acceptance and let the painting take care of itself. What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit. ~ John Updike
