The elegant minimalistic compositions of Michael Kessler are extemporaneous discoveries. The artist has synthesized, by an acute and reverential ideation of process, enigmatic and beatific surfaces. These elegant minimalistic compositions are tooled by the skilled hand of the artist as he explores the application of surface in variant techniques. Nature provides its basis, accentuating a sub-textural nexus of internal intricacy. These action oriented works, distilled and forged in ever-evolving methods, are conceived organically and rhythmically. They imply a synergistic exchange within its variegated layers and a still discernable architecture. Fused in this symbiotic and improvisational exchange between artist, material and surface, and, too, Kessler s willingness to engage simultaneously in both the evolution of his works and its decomposition, allows him to realize ultimately a most perspicacious result. The biography of this artist is extensive. Since winning a Whitney Fellowship in 1977 his work has achieved success and exposure in over 70 one-man shows worldwide. He has won the prestigious Rome Prize and an Artist in Residency at the esteemed Carnegie Mellon University. The artist s own reverence for the American Expressionists before him and their pursuit of the quintessential encapsulation of experience and ultimate spiritual truth galvanized the direction 1/6

2 of his own work. His exposure to works by Brice Marden, Barnette Newman and Arthur Dove sowed the seed of a newfound and lifetime pursuit.
