3 Professional Athlete, Writer & Featured Artist BARON BATCH I started painting for multiple reasons roughly a year ago while rehabilitating my knee after surgery. I had just moved into a new apartment and didn t like how the blank walls reminded me of a hospital room, and I wanted to add decorations that weren t store-bought and mass-produced. I also had a lot of free time because rehabbing my knee only took half the day in a new city where I had yet to meet anyone. So why not develop a hobby? That s when I began to paint. I experimented with mediums, adding color to my walls with each new piece of art that went up. I discovered that I preferred using acrylics on wood, which is more durable and textured than other mediums, such as paper canvas. I created what was meaningful to me. But am I an artist? I never took a class, and I have so much more to learn. I m also finding that my art constantly evolves as I come into my own. Regardless, my art serves a purpose for me. Each painting I do has a story behind it and a message to take away from it. And creating each painting, I ve found, is therapeutic, allowing me to clear my mind and focus on one activity for an extended period of time. That s why I didn t start painting with the intention of selling my work it simply made me happy. However, after the demand for my art has increased, I ve decided that it should be shared. My first art show, a solo exhibit where I auctioned off some pieces and displayed the rest, benefitted the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This one, about a year after I first started painting, will be my second. Although I ve completed about 40 pieces of art so far, I m not sure yet what direction I want to take with it. What I do know is that I enjoy it and I hope that you enjoy it as well. Thanks for letting me share it. Blessings, Baron

6 The VELVETERIA Experience An Exhibit of Black Velvet Paintings Velvet paintings are distinguished by the use of velvet (usually black velvet) as the support, in place of canvas, paper, or similar materials. The velvet provides an especially dark background against which colors stand out brightly. Many people are surprised to learn that velvet painting is an ancient technique. Black velvet paintings originated in ancient Kashmir, the homeland of the fabric. These original paintings were generally religious and portrayed the icons of the region which were painted by Russian Orthodox priests. Marco Polo and others introduced black velvet paintings to Western Europe, and some of these early works still hang in the Vatican Museums. Velvet paintings took on a new popularity in the United States in the late 20th Century. The paintings sold widely in America, and frequently have kitsch themes. They often depict images of Elvis Presley, John Wayne, Jesus, Native Americans, wolves, and cowboys, and the colors are often bright and vivid to contrast the dark velvet. They can also include more exotic or avant-garde themes. Ciudad Juárez, Mexico was a center of velvet painting in the 1970s. A displaced Georgia farm boy, Doyle Harden, was the pioneer who created an enormous factory, where velvets were produced by the thousands by artists sitting in studios. One artist would paint one piece of the picture, then slide the velvet along to the next artist, who would add another element to the artwork. The Velveteria exhibit will be open to the public during regular Arts Festival hours, Friday (4/12) & Saturday (4/13), 10AM-8PM, and Sunday (4/14), 12PM-5PM. Viewing of the exhibit is included with regular admission to the Arts Festival.

12 The Lubbock Arts Festival Remembers Susan Grisanti Guitarist ( ) Susan Grisanti was known around Lubbock as the Guitar Lady. She moved to Lubbock to study guitar with James Bogel at Texas Tech University in 1981, and found her personal satisfaction in playing classical guitar, both in performance and as an instructor. She became well known and performed at many functions she was confirmed to play at this 35th Annual Arts Festival. Susan touched the lives of so many, but those who will miss her most are the students who counted her as a mentor/friend. She was considered a generous teacher in the way she readily shared her knowledge and talent, and never tired of performing in new locations. She taught guitar to all ages, and served as a Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Artist a very prestigious honor. Susan Grisanti will be missed by many, and her musical legacy on the guitar will live on through the thousands of guitarists she taught, and everyone who had the privilege to hear her play. Please join us at the Arts Festival on Friday, April 12, 7 8 pm as we play Susan s music and remember her legacy.
