1 BUGC DRESS CODE We believe that an appropriately dressed student will help promote a better and safer learning environment. There is a lot of interpretation of what an appropriate dress code should look like for a school. What one person interprets as inappropriate for school wear may be perfectly reasonable to another. To minimize these controversies, BUGC has implemented protocols to ensure student attire meets standards that focus on work and productivity with the concept that this is a place of business for young adults, but still allows students sufficient freedom of expression in their clothing choices. The following guidelines are not intended to be entirely inclusive of all dress code situations. The school administration retains the final discretion to determine if the garment or accessory meets the dress code. Some exceptions may be made for athletics, special events, dances, and spirit weeks. The following guidelines pertain to attire during the school day and at school-sponsored activities. Shorts and Skirts Shorts or skirts must minimally reach to a student s mid-thigh for appropriate length when measured as the halfway point from the center top inseam to the top of the knee.

2 Jeans and Pants Jeans, pants, etc. with holes showing visible skin above the mid-thigh are not acceptable. Wearing tights or shorts under pants covering holes above the mid-thigh is acceptable. Students shall not wear pants that sag or fit below the waist. All pants must fit securely around the waist and be properly fastened. This includes P.E. shorts. Shirts Tank tops and sleeveless shirts that do not expose the torso or undergarments are acceptable.

3 Muscle shirts, off the shoulder tops, spaghetti straps, backless/racerback shirts, shirts exposing the midriff, including half shirts, crop tops, tube tops and halter-tops are not acceptable. Necklines A general guideline for all shirts worn to school would be necklines no lower than a straight line between the underarms Not for School Clothing designed as under clothing, slippers, loungewear, boxer shorts, and pajamas are not acceptable outerwear. Mesh knit/transparent shirts (unless worn with appropriate shirt underneath) or sheer compression pants, leggings/yoga pants/tights where skin tone or undergarments are visible are not acceptable.

4 Clothing or items directly or indirectly depicting or referring to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gang association, occult, violence, death, profanity, sexual innuendo or connotations, vulgarity, obscenity, put downs or other socially inappropriate messages demeaning to any race, religion, gender, ethnic group or nationality which advocates the violation of the law; or expresses anti-social or immoral behavior is not acceptable. Head Wear Headbands - are allowed Headwear such as hats, hoods, and visors are not to be worn inside the building during the time frame of 7:40 AM - 2:45 PM. During this time all headwear must be stored in lockers.

5 Headwear can be worn to OUTSIDE recess. Head coverings are allowable when worn for religious reasons. Sunglasses Sunglasses are not to be worn inside the building unless they are prescribed and have been approved through the Nurse's Office. Coats in School Winter or heavier coats are not to be worn to classrooms. They are to be kept in the student s locker during the school day. As building temperatures are known to fluctuate, students should have available a sweater or sweatshirt in their locker to help maintain temperature comfort throughout the day. YES NO!

6 When a student's outfit does not meet the dress norms, he or she will be asked privately and politely by staff to address the issue. Options include: Adjusting the fit of the clothing (if possible to do so and meet the guidelines) Putting on something else that is already at school (t-shirt, sweatshirt, PE uniform, jacket, etc.) Calling home and requesting a change of clothes ( Phone Home ~ ET) Disciplinary Steps for Dress Code Violations 1. First Offense Resolve the problem as listed above. 2. Second Offense - Parent called, and resolve the problem as listed above. 3. Third Offense - Parent called, 30 minute detention and resolve the problem as listed above. 4. Fourth Offense - Parent called, 60 minute detention and resolve the problem as listed above. 5. FURTHER OFFENSES - Continued offenses will be defined as insubordination and further consequences will be determined.
