3 Introduction We expect that all pupils at Downside will wear their uniform correctly and with pride. Your support in ensuring that your daughter is correctly equipped with uniform items is appreciated. By providing her with the correct uniform and equipment you will help her to quickly fit in and settle into the school. We hope that this guide will provide you with all the information you need, however, if you have any queries please contact the Admissions Office or our shop manager, Mrs Tracy Coles, on or Buying uniform Uniform and other items including scholars ties and other awards can be purchased online and collected at School at the start of term. We can post these items to you, however, we will have to add the cost of shipping to your bill and sufficient delivery time must be allowed for when ordering. Should items purchased online not fit we can exchange them at the start of term. The School Shop is open daily during the working week in term time and also on week days during the summer holiday prior to term starting. During all other holidays we are happy to open the shop by appointment. Please note it gets very busy the week before the start of the school year so we suggest that you call ahead to let us know your arrival time in order to avoid waiting to try items on. Please note: House Masters and House Mistresses will be authorised to order any items of Regulation clothing or Core sportswear that are missing and the cost will be added to your bill. Second-hand items The School has a second-hand shop from which items of clothing can be purchased at a discounted rate. If you wish to purchase second-hand items please Mrs Coles at the shop with your request. We cannot guarantee that all items will be available in all sizes. For this year there will be no second-hand sportswear available due to the recent change in sports uniform. Pupil Number Every pupil in Downside School has a unique pupil number which enables the bursary, school shop, laundry and boarding houses to identify your child from any others with a similar name. (The pupil number is a capital letter followed by three numbers.) The pupil number must be included on name tapes which are to be used to identify items of clothing. The school shop will order numbers for your child, if you ask them to do so. If you wish to get your child s name labels produced other than through the school shop, please follow this pattern: Pupil number Surname Initial(s) Name tapes for girls: Green cotton on a white cloth background

4 Please arrange for all labels to be sewn into clothing items, whether school uniform, sports clothing or personal (casual) items. Please do not use iron on labels as they come off in the school laundry. Please do not use laundry pens for naming clothes as the ink disappears over time. If you arrange for labels to be produced via school, the school shop will retain a proportion of the labels so that they can then label any future items that are purchased through the school shop. Bedding & Lamps Each pupil will need to have her own duvet and two named duvet covers. The School provides the bottom sheet, the pillow and the pillow case. Laundry All clothes laundered at School pass through commercial washing machines, therefore clothes must be machine washable at 40 o C at a minimum. The School cannot accept responsibility for any damage to items sent to the laundry which are not machine washable or which cannot be tumble dried. All boarders must also have named net-bags for washing underwear and socks. Socks and underwear should still be name taped. Items requiring dry cleaning should be handed to the House Mother; an additional charge will be made for this service. Please note: Day pupils should not put their clothes in to the School laundry system. Holidays All personal items should be taken home in the summer holidays. The only items allowed to remain are school uniform, bedding, school textbooks / folders and desk lights. These items should be packed in plastic crates and stored in the designated areas. Items stored inappropriately i.e. in plastic bags may be mistaken as unwanted and thrown away.

11 . Regulations Dress Rules 2. For Girls: Uniform consists of School blouse, jacket and skirt as supplied by the School Shop. Instead of the jacket, a maroon V-necked sweater may be worn. Tights should be black or flesh coloured. Girls shoes should have a heel of at least half an inch, and heels should not be too high. Girls in forms to 5 must have their hair tied back when in regulation dress. 3. For all pupils, the jacket is necessary because it is worn at Mass and on other formal occasions, such as Open Days. 4. Everyone needs at least two pairs of black shoes (not boots) in good condition. These must be of polished leather with black soles. 5. Full regulation dress is to be worn during the working day. On Sundays it must be worn until after Mass. This includes pupils in the Schola Cantorum and those serving at the altar. Girls singing in the Schola, and serving on the altar, should have their hair tied back. 6. In the Refectory during the working week (Monday until Friday) for breakfast and lunch the only clothing permissible is full regulation dress. At Saturday breakfast, regulation dress must be worn. At tea, clean sportswear with trainers or gym shoes is permissible. Smart casual wear is allowed during supper. 7. Informal dress must be respectable and not of the kind to make others feel uncomfortable. During the winter timetable, no one may enter the Refectory wearing shorts, and hats are never to be worn indoors. At other times, shorts and sandals may be worn. 8. All clothes must be marked with the owner s name. Unmarked clothes will be disposed of by the Laundry after a short period. 9. Hair styles must be appropriate: Pupils are expected to have neat, clean and presentable hair. Tinting or dyeing is not allowed, and yellow bleaching is not permissible. Extremes of hairstyle are not acceptable. For safety reasons, girls may have to have hair tied back for certain lessons, e.g. games. Girls hair, including that of Sixth Formers, should be tied back when in full regulation dress, i.e. wearing a jacket, for example at Mass, or on Open Days. While in regulation dress, and during the working day (8.00 am to 5.45 pm), pupils below the Sixth Forms may not wear visible makeup or nail varnish. Sixth Form girls may wear discreet make-up, and discreet nail varnish, if they wish. While in casual dress, and outside the working day, girls in the Third to Fifth Forms may wear clear nail varnish and only minimal, natural make-up. 0. Girls in the Third to Fifth Forms are permitted to wear one stud in each ear lobe, and girls and may wear a thin chain necklace with a Cross. Sixth Form girls may wear discreet earrings (one earring in each ear lobe). In regulation dress, bracelets may not be worn. In the Sixth Form, one discreet ring may be worn. Other than in ears, no piercing should be on display at any time. While in casual clothes, and outside the working day, sensible norms and limits should be observed. For reasons of safety, all jewellery may have to be removed at certain times, e.g. for games and sports.. Personal stereos or ipod may not be worn by pupils when in regulation dress. 2. Items of regulation dress may not be worn in combination with casual clothes. When regulation dress is worn it must be worn smartly.
