1 Bob Jones High School Department of Family & Consumer Sciences Fashion Merchandising (Level Three) FACS Instructor: Lab Fee: $30.00 Mrs. Kristy Wheeler (256) ext. 419 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fashion Merchandising is a one-credit course for students who are interested in the fashion and retail industry. Content provides opportunities for students to explore factors related to the retail industry, examine structure and organization of fashion business operations, study merchandising techniques, utilize technology in fashion merchandising, and explore career options in fashion and retail industries. Additional costs will be required as special projects are constructed (see attachment 5). COURSE GOALS/OBJECTIVES: Students will have the ability to comprehend course material and to conduct appropriate lab experiences related to clothing, design, and sewing. Students will be personally responsible for classroom presentations, projects, labs, and overall participation. (See attachment 1, Alabama Course of Study) PREREQUISITES: Fashion (Level One) and Fashion Design (Level Two) are prerequisites. RESOURCES FOR THE COURSE: Text: Clothing, Fashion, Fabrics, and Construction (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2003) Supplemental Materials: Computer programs, Internet sites, handouts, fashion magazines, power point presentations, videos, computerized monogram/embroidery sewing machines, guest speakers and industry personnel GRADING POLICY/ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES: 1. Grading scale, semester and final exam (see student handbook) 2. 30%: Daily work: 70%: Tests, sewing labs and 3-4 projects; and final: Portfolio and Presentation 3. Grading Scale: = A = B = C = D = F CALENDAR/COURSE OUTLINE: See Attachment 2 for course outline and Attachment 4 for Photo Release Form (to be signed and returned) DISCIPLINE POLICY: See Attachment 3 (to be signed and returned) ATTENDANCE: Good attendance is required for a good learning situation. Poor attendance can hinder learning, especially in lab situations. Make up work is REQUIRED and is the RESPONSIBILITY of the student. Refer to the attendance policy in student handbook. Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is an integral component of this course and is the student organization for Family and Consumer Sciences. The mission of the organization is to help students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth. A fee of $25.00 will be required to join (includes t-shirt). 1

Explain the impact of globalization on the fashion industry. 2. Critique design and buying centers of the fashion industry. 3. Assess the impact of fashion cycles on the fashion industry. 4. Compare factors affecting fashion trends and fads. 5. Interpret fashion styles and trends as they relate to a designer s line. 6. Analyze consumer behavior and attitudes toward shopping in relation to the retail industry. 7. Analyze the cycling process of forecasting, planning, and buying for the retail industry. Fashion Business Operations 8. Compare the structure and organization of various retail operations, including factors related to customer service, safety, and security in the fashion industry. 9. Describe factors to consider when preparing financial and merchandise assortment Buying plans. Identifying divisions within companies of apparel manufacturers and retailers 10. Interpret effects of security and inventory control strategies, cash and credit transition methods, laws, and worksite policies on loss prevention and store profit. 11. Describe principles and practices involved with human resource management in the retail industry. 12. Assess ways technology impacts fashion design, apparel distribution, and marketing. Fashion Merchandising 13. Describe various merchandising techniques used in retail operations. 14. Evaluate various store layout designs, including types of merchandise displayed within each type of layout. 15. Explain the importance of visual merchandising, advertising, and special events to retail sales. 16. Compare factors that determine the price of products sold in the fashion industry. 17. Evaluate principles of marketing and the importance of the marketing mix to a retail operation. Examples: price, promotion, product, place, television, print, radio, Internet 18. Explain methods used by the fashion retailer to determine products to be marketed, including product planning. 19. Determine research strategies used by manufacturers and retailers to help with market segmentation. 20. Compare current trends in non-store retail merchandising. Examples: Internet shopping, catalogs 2
3 Fashion Merchandising Course Outline Attachment 2 Essential Questions (EQ)/Culminating Products (CP) Fashion Merchandising students will be completing independent business and design/construction projects. The in-depth projects will cover all objectives in the Alabama Course of Study. Students will be assisting the instructor with Fashion 1 and Fashion 2 students as needed. Fashion Merchandising students will have the opportunity to job shadow professionals in the fashion industry. This will give students hands-on experience in the fashion industry. **NOTE: Calendar is subject to change at the discretion of the teacher. Week 1-3 Week 4-5 Week 6-7 Week 8-9 Week Week 12 Week Introduction of the class; Job Shadow Preparation; Creating Your Own Apparel Line Part 1 to include research for inspiration, Company Information Sheet, fabric choices, sketches for line. (EQ How does a fashion retailer successfully organize and manage a fashion retail business? What is the impact of market segmentation on apparel manufacturers and fashion retailers?) Culminating Product (CP) Fashion Display Board; Presentation (EQ What factors affect fashion trends and fads? How are decisions made to determine what products are marketable?) Culminating Product (CP) Retail Industry Research Portfolio to include globalization on the fashion industry, critique buying centers, fashion cycles, trends and fads, consumer behaviors and attitudes toward shopping, fashion forecasting and buying. What is the impact of consumers and their shopping choices on the forecasting and buying decisions for the retail industry?) Culminating Product (CP) Fashion Business Plan to include retail operations (customer service, safety, security), financial preparations, merchandise assortment, worksite policies, human resource management, technology, store layout, visual merchandising, price points, advertising, marketing. (EQ What principles and practices are involved on the human resource management aspect of the fashion retail industry? What is the influence of the layout of a fashion retail store on the sell of the merchandise?) Culminating Product (CP) Creating Your Own Apparel Line Garment 1 Construction. (EQ How do fashion styles and trends influence a designer s line? Culminating Product (CP) Creating Your Own Apparel Line Power Point Preparation Part 1 to include target market, situation analysis, general product line information, trends for your line, store location. Creating Your Own Apparel Line Garment 2 Construction. Culminating Product (CP) Week 15 Creating Your Own Apparel Line Power Point Preparation Part 2 to include advertising/promotions, window display, sizing chart, hang tag, care labels, logo. Week Week 18 Creating Your Own Apparel Line Garment 3 Construction. Culminating Product (CP) Complete Professional Design portfolio and power point presentation to include sketches, photos and descriptions of each completed garment, conclusion paragraph, and bibliography; Presentation to FACS classes and FACS teachers. (EQ What role does visual merchandising, advertising, and special events play in making fashion retail sales?) Culminating Product (CP) **Students will be job shadowing in the fashion industry throughout the semester where reports will be due.
4 Attachment 3 Parent Letter - Discipline Policy to be returned! Fashion Merchandising (Level Three) Instructor: Mrs. Kristy Wheeler Dear Parent(s), I will be your child s Fashion Merchandising instructor this semester. In order to provide your child and all students in my classroom the excellent educational environment they deserve, I have developed a discipline plan that will be in effect at all times. When in my classroom, students must obey the following rules: 1. Bring all needed materials to class. REQUIRED MATERIALS: This includes a two- inch three-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, pens and pencils, basic sewing notions, sketching supplies, etc (see Attachment 5). 2. Be in seat and ready to work when the bell rings. 3. Listen and stay seated when someone is talking. 4. Respect the rights and property of others. 5. Follow directions and ask questions as needed. 6. Obey all school rules. (See student handbook). If a student breaks a rule, the following consequences will occur: 1. First time student breaks a rule: Teacher warning 2. Second time student breaks a rule: Detention, contact parents 3. Third time student breaks a rule: Detention, contact parents and principal Severely disruptive students will be sent to the principal immediately! Positive behavior by all students enables a better learning situation and is reinforced by frequent verbal praise, complimentary notes, and more time for fun related projects. In order for this plan to have the greatest results, I need your assistance. First, the $30.00 class fee must be paid for your child to participate in sewing and design labs. ** Please note: Basic sewing notions, fabrics and decorations (beads, appliqués) need to be purchased by the student for the sewing projects the student will be required to sew. Some sewing notions, patterns, thread, and design supplies will be purchased with class fee. Second, please discuss the contents of this letter with your child, then sign and return to me. 6 Attachment 5 Fashion Merchandising Equipment List Every student must purchase his or her own set of the following sewing notions, sketching supplies and basic classroom supplies. You will have your own bin in the classroom to store personal supplies for your portfolio supplies and various sewing projects. I will provide you with many of the basic sewing notions and supplies not listed here for classroom use. The following should be included in your classroom supply kit: Sewing Supplies Sewing Scissors (with ribbon tied on to identify) Pincushion with pins Hand sewing needles (variety pack) Seam ripper Measuring tape Fabric marking pen (ex: chalk pencil) Fabric and notions for the apparel line you will be creating 2-3-ring binder Dividers with Labels Loose leaf paper Pens and/or pencils Basic Classroom Supplies Non-sewing Project Supplies Sketching paper (8 ½ x 11 preferred) Sketching medium (watercolor pencils, chalk, etc) Clear page protectors Scrapbook supplies Glue sticks Coloring Pencils 1 - Presentation board **You will be creating your own fashion business and apparel line as your final exam project to be worked on throughout the semester. **Label everything possible with your name to prevent any mix-ups during labs. 6
