2 Introduction Within the Business 90 Credit Diploma you will study a total of 9 units over the year. Should you wish to continue into year 13 to achieve the Extended Diploma in Business you will study a further 9 units. Within your Summer Introductory Module we are focusing on 2 units. Unit 1: The Business Environment Unit 2: Business Resources
3 Part 1 Unit 1: The Business Environment
4 Unit 1: The Business Environment Within this unit you will examine how businesses are affected by outside change, such as changes in laws and changes in society. You will investigate the changing environment for 2 different types of businesses; Burberry Plc and New College, Pontefract. We will begin by looking at the following criteria; Pass Describing the type of business, purpose and ownership of two contrasting businesses Describe = Give a clear description that includes all the relevant features think of it as painting a picture with words
5 What am I actually being asked to do? In preparation for the start of your BTEC Certificate in Business course we would like you to complete a short written report that includes information as directed in the following slides. Lets start with the two businesses/organisations that you need to introduce New College Pontefract and Burberry plc. The following slide gives some information about the history of both, can you find out more?
6 Main points to include: Established since 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke Hampshire In 1880 Burberry introduced the brand gabardine In 1891 Burberry opened a shop in the Haymarket London and began to be known as Burberrys of London One of the largest retailers in the world it specialises in men s, women s, children's clothing, accessories and perfumes It has almost 500 locations world wide It is a Public Limited Company (PLC) and therefore owned by shareholders In 2013 Romeo Beckham modelled for the company. In 2013 the company made pre-tax profits of over 350 million...and anything else that's interesting! Founded in 1911 it was originally built on the site of a Victorian slaughter house and was know as Pontefract and District Girls High School. It became a coeducational sixth form school known as Park High School in 1978 In 1987 it became North East Wakefield s sixth form college known as NEW College. In 1911 it has an intake of 53 girls today it has an intake of over 2000 sixth form students from the 5 towns area and beyond. NC has over 176 staff It offers a wide range of GCEs and BTEC subjects...and anything else that's interesting!
7 What to do with your research information Now you have completed your research into New College Pontefract and Burberry Plc, we would like you to complete one paragraph explaining who Burberry is and a second paragraph explaining who New College Pontefract is and include the background and history of both.
8 Activity/Purpose Now that you have carried out your research and written up your findings about New College Pontefract and Burberry plc can you decide what their activity is. Glossary: Business activities include any activity carried out by the organisation to provide for the needs of the customer/consumer In other words what do New College Pontefract and Burberry plc do every day, what is their purpose? In your next paragraph for unit 1 can you write two sentences to describe what the activity of each business is?
9 Aims and Objectives I am sure you have been introduced to the BBC Bitesize website while at your high school. Use this website, and their GCSE Business pages to read and make some notes about aims and objectives.

11 And finally for unit 1 for the summer. Using the information from the BBC Bitesize pages, and the information from the previous slide add to the sentences you have written about the activity of New College Pontefract and Burberry plc to describe what an aim and an objective is and give examples of both New College Pontefract and Burberry plc aims and objectives.

14 Unit 2 Business Resources Within this unit you will investigate human resources and the way that people are recruited and allocated to different departments and teams. The unit will then go on to consider the use of technology with the workplace and finally look at finance as a resource. Learning how financial statements and budgeting are used. Again we will begin by looking at the following criteria; Pass Describe the recruitment documentation used by a selected organisation. A reminder - Describe = Give a clear description that includes all the relevant features think of it as painting a picture with words
15 What am I actually being asked to do? The business you are going to research and apply your knowledge to is NEXT Using the following website, can you find out some background information about NEXT? Your research could include a brief history, what it sells, the number of stores it has and where its head office is.
16 Types of employment. NEXT employ many different types of employees. These made be employed on a permanent, temporary, part-time and full time basis. Watch the video on YouTube Now use the information you have found and write a short paragraph explain the following types of employment: Full employment; Part-time employment; Casual employment.
17 Examples of employment at NEXT Using the website below, can you find an example of a job that may be advertised at NEXT head office; a job that could be advertised for one of their stores; a job that could be advertised in the warehouse and finally a job that could be advertised in their call centre. Should there not be any relevant jobs advertised during the summer don t worry just think and make a note of ones you think may be advertised for NEXT at their various sites.
18 The Recruitment Process at NEXT Using the website below, write a short paragraph about the recruitment process and the documents that are used. Your paragraph should include information about: The Human Resources Department; The Job Advert and the information it includes; The Job Description/Person Specification and the information it includes. Can you also make a flow-chart showing all the stages of the recruitment process?

21 Unit 4 Business Communication We are always communicating even when we are silent we are still sending a message. When we look away, we are expressing something, and when we talk, wave our hands, smile or nod, we are still communicating. Being able to write, read and speak clearly is important in communication, but having these basic skills does not mean necessarily that you can communicate well and do it effectively.
