16 EDITOR S LETTER MAGIC IS REAL Hello You, Of course it s happening inside your head, Harry. But why on earth should that mean it isn t real? Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter) Magic happens: not in a Harry Potter kind of way, but rather (at ELLE magazine, at least) in a surprising, beat-the-odds and make-it-happen manner. When we first heard Maria Borges was possibly coming to South Africa, we set up an impromptu siege in our office (with oh-so-appropriate coffee cups, calendars, good old-fashioned pens and notebooks we ditched the computers for once), and began dreaming about what would be, we knew, a memorable shoot. To us, memorable means superb clothes to feature, extraordinary stories to share, a fabulous crew to work with and a model we know will be able to tell our sartorial tales in a way no one else can. It s a collusion of creativity, a gathering of talents where everything (spoiler alert: even sweat-inducing glitches, but I will come back to this later) is possible. We were lucky; first it had always been Maria s dream to shoot with ELLE South Africa. Then, the Luanda-born, New York-based 23-year-old supermodel and Victoria s Secret Angel also had a gap in her super busy diary three free days between shooting a campaign for a major cosmetic brand (lips are sealed, we can t tell you who), and walking the catwalks of fashion week in New York, Paris, London and Milan for Spring/ Summer Soon, the contour of our dream shoot became more defined. Three weeks later, Maria was on a plane to Cape Town. Well, kind of. Rewind a few days, to D-5 before shoot day: Tarryn Oppel and I are sourcing in exclusivity from the freshly landed Kenzo x H&M collection still kept secret behind closed doors. Barely containing our excitement but also aware of the embargo on the collection, we look through the rails of bold and daring designs (turn to page 28 to see the collection in avant-première), and pack it in huge black bags until the shoot (not that this makes us particularly inconspicuous, though). D-3: Maria is still waiting for her visa but we are confident she will soon be with us (panic attacks forbidden). D-2: Weather forecast update for a two-day shoot outdoors and it reads like the diary of an irresolute mind everything from pouring rain to bright sunshine (note to selves: have a back-up plan). D-1: Maria misses her connection flight to South Africa; we have to move the shoot (and hope her jetlag doesn t get the best of her). D-Day: While we thought the weather forecast had listed every possible weather option, it surprises us with a hitherto unlisted raging storm. That s when magic happened, literally: Maria landed; incredibly, the storm abated; the studio lit up; the crew got ready, with garments from Kenzo x H&M, Gucci, Prada, Dolce&Gabbana and Marianne Fassler waiting on hangers like silent doppelgängers. The minute she walked into the studio the world literally turned upside down, her energy overwhelming us like a ray of sunshine. If you need proof, turn to page 56 and 103. I m concerned and mentally occupied by the day-to-day experiences of people of colour in the States and around the world. HIDDEN TALENT? Drawing I always wanted to be an architect.
