1 Middle School Production of PIRATES OF PENZANCE Costumes Parameters and Requirements Welcome to a new year in Performing Arts! As we embark on the journey to bring PIRATES OF PENZANCE to life, we will need your help in gathering your costumes. Read this instructional sheet carefully. Pay special note to the established deadlines. We respectfully ask that all commit to these dates. Any questions or concerns, please contact us. We are here to help! All required items are due on Monday, October 24, This is necessary so costume fittings can proceed in the short allotted time available 2. Secondary Items due Monday, November 7, Options for Obtaining Student s Costume Thrift stores Internet Local stores Family s closets Check the opposite gender department in stores Some costumes pieces/shoes may be available from our costume room at MMS, 1 st come 1 st served. IMPORTANT: Text, or call Girija or Kat by Monday, October 17 th, 2016 to schedule a time to see what s available. No requests after this date, please. Other Important information You are not required to buy anything new The costume department has the option to reject an item if it does not fit with the look of the play Leave tags on items, if not used they can be returned Please do not bring any item that can t be altered or changed Bring larger rather than smaller items No item too constricting or tight fitting student s need to move on stage easily Footwear should be well fitting and suited to all stage activity LABEL each item and the bag/container it comes in with your CHILD S NAME. (This will save us important time often lost tracking down unidentified costumes) A Final Note about Deadlines: We depend on your assistance. As mentioned, we are ready to help in any way we can, but we rely on your good communication. 2 Pirates of Penzance Dottie, a Maiden Costume Group: Maidens, Group 2 This play takes place in the 1890 s. Your character is a maiden under the watchful eye of the major general. Your costume is somewhat simple, feminine and modest.. Look at the pictures that are included showing the look we are going for. Costume pieces can be altered to better fit the time period, size, or length. Fabrics are natural looking, linen, wool, cotton, and silk. The colors are deep, rich, jewel tones. Nothing bright neon or sparkly. Check with the costume room early to see if we have any pieces that will fit you. Required Items These items must be turned in by October 24 th. 1. DRESS: High neckline with long or ¾ length sleeves, gathered or puffy shoulders, a fitted waist, loose full A-line or gathered skirt, and ankle length, color darker shades green, grey, blue or teal. If you cannot find a dress that works you may choose a skirt that has a fitted waist, loose full A-line or gathered, in same color as dress above; and a blouse that has a high neckline, long or ¾ length sleeves, gathered or puffy shoulders, color white, grey or a darker shade of skirt color. 2. STOCKINGS: Knee highs, color black or a shade to blend or match skirt. 3. SLIP: Ankle length to show below skirt, with lace or ruffle at hem. Or a plain slip, ankle length plus a piece of lace, 3 to 4 inches wide, to add to bottom. Secondary Items These items are required but we are giving you a little extra time in case they need to be ordered. They are due November 7 th. 1. SHOES: Chinese Maryjane style, cotton, color black. Optional Items These items are not required but can make your costume more fun and interesting, please bring as many as you can, no later than November 7 th. 1. RIBBON: For hair, 1 yard, 3 inches wide, nothing stiff, color to match or blend with other costume pieces.

4 Pirates of Penzance Vianne, a Police Officer This play takes place in the 1890 s. Look at the pictures that are included showing the look we are going for. Costume pieces can be altered to better fit the time period, size, or length. Fabrics are natural looking, nothing shiny or sparkly. Check with the costume room early to see if we have anything that fits you. Required Items These items must be turned in by October 24 th. 1. SUIT (COAT & PANTS): Traditional cut, color black, (if you can t find a suit then bring a suit coat and dress slacks, color - black) 2. BELT: 2 to 3 inches wide, long enough to fit over the coat, leather look, color black 3. SOCKS: Dress style, color - black Secondary Items These items are required but we are giving you a little extra time in case they need to be ordered. They are due November 7 th. 1. SHOES: Oxford or slip on style dress style, color - black (no flats) (See photo) To Be Provided 1. Hat with badge 2. Trims & buttons
