2 Introduction This workbook contains information to help you gain knowledge and understanding in design and technology and to make progress through the National Curriculum Levels. Your work will be marked regularly and is aimed at providing you with feedback to help you understand what you have done well and how you can improve your performance. As you work through the lessons you can tick the Levels that you have completed. To achieve a particular level you will need to have ticked almost the requirements for that level. Presentation of Your Work Write the date on the work you are completing Underline headings with a ruler Write neatly using black or blue pens Cross out mistakes neatly Draw neatly using a sharpened pencil Use colouring pencils to help you communicate your design ideas Do not doodle on your work Finish every section in your booklet before moving onto the next.

I have explained what I did well when I made my ugly doll I am able to explain two or more things I like about my ugly doll I have identified some improvements that could be made to my finished ugly doll I have mentioned the research I gathered when evaluating some of my design ideas I have evaluated each design idea against the design brief and explained how I have met some of the specifications. I asked my target market their opinion of my final design and recorded the results. I have completed some quality control checks when I made my product and recorded the results. 8 DESIGN BRIEF Brief: To design and make an ugly doll character using a range of recycled fabrics, this could either represent your personality, your appearance or a famous person of your choice. Task: Underneath write out in detail your intentions for this project My Design Brief Target users The age of the person who my ugly doll character is designed for. Aesthetics The colour I would like to use for the main body of my ugly doll character is The stitches I will use to decorate ugly doll character are. The additional decorative features that I hope to use are Manufacture The pieces of equipment I will use to make my ugly doll character are.
9 Basic Design Ideas In order to produce the best product designers always come up with lots of ideas in order to see which one would be most successful. Task: Below draw your ideas for your ugly doll you will be shown different possible shapes for your doll, but you may want to change them slightly. To gain a higher level you will need to choose a more complex shape. Evaluate each design idea with WWW / EBI Remember to label the different parts of the ugly doll e.g types of stitches to be used / decorative features (use of buttons/sequins) and use colour in all your drawings. 10 Embroidery stitching experiments To decorate or embellish your Ugly Doll you will learn the following embroidery stitches, stick your practise samples beside the pictures: Running stitch. Cross stitch Blanket stitch Chain stitch Herringbone stitc
11 More Design Ideas. Task: Now add some of your embroidery stitches to your ugly doll Evaluate each design idea with WWW / EBI Remember to label the different parts of the felt creature e.g types of stitches to be used / decorative features (use of buttons/sequins) and use colour in all your drawings. 12 Samples. Now complete a trial run of a detail you want to go onto your Ugly Doll. This is called a sample. Put it here.
13 Task: Final Design In the box below draw,add colour shading and label the final design for your felt creature you may need to draw different views e.g front and side to show the detail of your design Try and draw your design to scale. Scale = 1:2 (every 1cm on the page = 2cm in real life) NOW: you will need to draw this out on thin tracing paper to use as a pattern for your doll.

16 Evaluating the design process In the ugly doll project you will be mainly assessed on your designing and evaluation throughout the project. It is important that you know and understand what you must do to achieve your target level so please read the level sheet attached to this booklet. Task Test how well you have made your ugly doll and record your results in the table below. Test Result 1. How well was the felt cut out using the pattern pieces? 2. How complicated was the shape to cut? 3. How neat are the stitches? 4. Is there a range of embroidery stitches? 5. What decorations have been applied to the felt creature? 6. How well are any sequins etc. attached? 7. Does the final design look like the made product?
17 In this project you are going to be concentrating mainly on evaluating the designing of your Ugly doll. Task: Assess the work you have produced, answer the questions below. 1. From your evaluation of your work which part of the project did you produce the best piece of work? Explain your reasons for this. 2. If you were to design another Ugly Doll, what would you do differently? 3. If you were to make another Ugly Doll, how would you make it differently? 4. Which PLT s skills did you use in this project?
