4 2. THE STORY OF A PASSION FOR FASHION Our story takes place in a newsroom and it s time for Nigel Newsman to read the news. Nigel thinks the most interesting news is stories about the rich and famous and what they are wearing. Rosie Wright, the news reporter, has some interesting reports about wild animals but Nigel is not interested. Wendy presents the weather and then she accidently spills a cup of coffee over Nigel s expensive suit. Nigel is not happy! He demands that Rosie goes to get him a new suit and some sandwiches. Nigel also sends Rosie and Wendy to report on London Fashion Week. Back in the studio, Wendy is reading her book The Emperor s New Clothes, when some exciting news arrives. Michael Jackson s clothes and costumes are to be auctioned in Hollywood! The television studio has one invitation for a reporter to go to the auction. Nigel says he s going. Rosie says she s the reporter so she should go. Nigel says she wouldn t belong in Hollywood and makes Rosie feel sad. And then Nigel says he needs a really special suit to wear and orders Rosie to find a designer to make one! Rosie calls Stella Bella the designer and arranges for her to make a suit for Nigel. Rosie and Nigel go to Stella s design studio and she measures Nigel for the suit. Then she shows them both the fabric for the suit. Stella describes the fabric s beautiful colours and wonderful patterns. And most importantly, she tells them it is invisible to anyone who is not fashion conscious. Does Nigel go to Hollywood with his special suit? Or does Nigel realise how horrible he is and try to make it up with Wendy and Rosie? Does Rosie get to report on animals in the wild? Are you fashion conscious? Fashion conscious: to be interested in the latest fashions and in wearing fashionable clothes. Make it up to someone: to do something good that helps someone to feel better after you did something to make them feel sad.

She is passionate about protecting wildlife especially endangered species. She wants everyone to know about the animals in the wild that are in danger of becoming extinct. Wendy Wind is the weathergirl. She is not very confident and is clumsy but usually only when Nigel is around. Her passion is reading and she particularly likes classic stories. Wendy and Rosie work well together. Stella Bella is cheerful, talkative and very confident as she says, I love being me. Stella is the designer Rosie gets to make Nigel s new suit. 7 5. THE EMPEROR S NEW CLOTHES Read this classic story by Hans Christian Anderson which features in Passion for Fashion. Underline the words you don t understand. As a class, discuss the vocabulary and what happens in the story. Many years ago there lived an emperor who loved clothes. He liked them so much he was always in his dressing room changing his clothes. He also loved to show off to his people. One day two thieves heard about the vain emperor and decided to come to the city. They said they could make clothes from fabric with beautiful colours and wonderful patterns. And more importantly, the fabric was invisible to anyone who was stupid. When the emperor heard this he said, I ll buy some of these clothes and then I ll know who is clever and who is stupid in my city. So the emperor gave the thieves lots of money to buy silk threads for his new clothes. But the thieves did not buy anything. They pretended to work on their looms, but their looms were empty, there was no fabric of beautiful colours with wonderful patterns. After a few days, the emperor wanted to see his clothes so he sent an important minister to visit the thieves. When the minister looked at the looms he was confused - he couldn t see anything! But he thought, If I say that I can t see the fabric, everyone will think I m stupid! So he said, The fabric is beautiful and the colours are wonderful! And this is what he told the emperor. The emperor decided he would go and see the fabric and the clothes for himself. When he looked at the looms he thought, Am I stupid? I can t see anything. But he said What amazing clothes! I will wear them for the procession in the city. On the day of the procession the thieves helped the emperor put on his new clothes. The ministers said how wonderful they were. Then the emperor went out into the streets and all the people said, The emperor s new clothes are the most beautiful in the world! Everyone said they could see the clothes because nobody wanted to be called stupid. But then a child shouted, He hasn t got anything on! And everyone started saying, It s true! The emperor is naked! The emperor shivered, because he knew the people were right, he had no clothes on. But he continued to hold his head up high and finished the procession. to show off: to do something to get attention or admiration, but in a way that annoys people. to be vain: to have a high opinion of what you look like; or of things you have done. loom: a machine for making fabric. to hold your head up high: to feel proud.
