1 RULES: The $20 Clothing Challenge is designed to expand 4-H ers shopping experiences with different shopping venues that may be more economical and environmentally sound. We acknowledge that, while sewing is a very important skill to develop, making garments may not always be the most cost-effective way of developing our wardrobes. In fact, buying fabric, patterns and notions may cost more than buying a similar garment on sale or through resale/consignment/thrift stores. The spirit and intent of this track of the $20 Challenge is to expand 4-H ers shopping horizons to go green (reuse, recycle and keep things out of landfills) and thrifty (in light of today s economy!). However, new items can be entered IF they are purchased on sale to meet a specific intended use and DO NOT exceed the $20 cost limit. Contest Rules: All participants (male or female) must: 1. Have purchased the outfit* they are entering after April 10, Have identified a specific intended use for their selected outfit. 3. Have selected and purchased the outfit ON SALE from a traditional outlet or (for extra credit) from a garage sale, consignment or resale shop or thrift store (such as a Goodwill or Salvation Army store).** 4. NOT just pull an existing outfit from their closets or their siblings closets. *** 5. NOT spend more than $20 for their outfit (not including shoes, accessories and undergarments); tax is not included in the $20 cost limit. 6. Provide receipt(s) to document the cost of the outfit. If more than one item is entered (ex. a top and a bottom purchased separately, all receipts must be turned in.) Receipts are NOT required for accessories, shoes, etc. 7. Complete the attached entry/report form. 8. Submit the attached entry form, and all receipts / sales slips to the Buncombe County 4-H Office NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm on Friday, May 11, Submit their actual outfit for judging NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm on Friday, May 11, Model their outfit for fit and poise judging on Monday, May 14, Model their outfit at the 4-H Fashion Revue/Talent Showcase at the Extension office on Saturday, May 19, *By outfit, we mean a top and bottom or dress. It must also conform to the North Carolina 4-H Dress Code. The 4-H Dress Code is designed to assure that 4-H ers appear in attire that resembles a school and/or community expectation. Examples of prohibited dress or appearance include: tube tops, halter tops, one-shoulder tops, strapless tops, casual tops with spaghetti straps dresses/tops/pants/skirts that expose midriff, navel, back or cleavage sagging pants/exposed undergarments see-through clothing or clothing that encourages indecent exposure attire with messages or illustrations that are lewd, indecent or vulgar or that advertise any product or service not permitted by law to minors (alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, or drugs) any adornment such as chains or spikes that reasonably could be perceived as or used as a weapon any symbols, styles or attire frequently associated with intimidation **If items are purchased from a garage sale, the buyer should ask the seller to write a receipt on a piece of paper giving the date, price and seller s name. If one part of an outfit was purchased at a garage sale and another part was purchased at a Goodwill store, two receipts are required. ***A hand-me-down outfit is only eligible if the 4-H er actually selects it for a specific intended use, and the person from whom the outfit is handed down must provide a note indicating that it was a hand-me-down item, as well as the date it was given. New items that are gifted to the 4-H er are NOT eligible for competition.
