WELCOME WE CREATE FASHION Welcome to BA (Hons) Fashion Design (4 year). In this Welcome Guide you will find all the information you need to help you settle into your studies at this September.

The course is industry focused - combining live briefs, industry partnerships and a dedicated staff of fashion professionals to deliver a wide range of skills and experiences.

2 WELCOME WE CREATE FASHION Welcome to BA (Hons) Fashion Design (4 year). In this Welcome Guide you will find all the information you need to help you settle into your studies at this September. As an award winning and internationally recognised course, we are confident that you will find your time with us productive in planning your career in the fashion sector. The course is industry focused - combining live briefs, industry partnerships and a dedicated staff of fashion professionals to deliver a wide range of skills and experiences. The course is also well connected to enable students secure work placements with high profile and internationally recognised brands the majority of year 2 Fashion Design students undertake placements during London Fashion Week alone. The course benefits from numerous facilities, including access to design, pattern and production studios (with specialist industrial machinery enabling you to cut and manufacture garments), an industrystandard computer-aided manufacture facility (Gerber), and a state-of-the-art fashion textiles digital printing resource with silk screen-printing and dye baths for fabric design. Year 0 will be the inaugural year and we are very excited for this addition to our course. You will be introduced to the basics of Fashion Design through dynamic workshops that will cover colour, fabric and design practice. Combined with in-depth research and how to develop a concept, this will give you the perfect platform to enter into Year 1. 3 PRE-ARRIVAL READING LIST Contextual Studies will play an important part of your degree and it is imperative you continuously research the past, current and future. To start the programme, we would like you to read the following publication: In this section you will find a list of activities that we ask you to complete before you arrive to start your course in September. VISITS Trips to London are an important part of the course and students are expected to make several visits during projects to visit exhibitions, undertake Fashion Trails and source fabric and trims. Overseas trips to Paris and New York are also available and cost dependent on numbers and dates of travel. EQUIPMENT LIST It is essential for students on BA (Hons) Fashion Design (4 year) to bring with them the following equipment when they join the course in September: These items are available from Staples, WH Smith, UCA Shops and Various Stationery Shops: -Small Perspex Ruler -H + B Pencils (HB, 2H etc) -Set of Coloured Fine Liner Pens -Scotch Tape (Magic Tape) -Pencil Sharpener + Eraser -Thimble (get size to fit middle finger) -Digital Camera for recording processes, demo s etc. Course costs for 2015/16 These are some other costs that students will need to consider whilst studying. Previously, students contributed approximately towards the cost of the Internal Fashion Show, held at Camden Town Hall in London. Students also have the chance to show at Graduate Fashion Week in London. Sketchbooks and general art equipment are part of every project. Projects often involve the use of fabrics, which can be bought from the on site shop. Students are also encouraged to source fabrics from other suppliers. Digitally printed fabrics can also be bought on site. The cost of digital print is subsidised and represents excellent value for money compared with commercial bureaus. You can find their contact details at the start of this Welcome Guide. TIME LOCATION You have chosen a career in Fashion. In order to succeed in this competitive field you must have a contemporary awareness of current fashion. It is important you can analyse designers and their aesthetics and have a view on their work. You will be required to present your work on Tuesday 15th September. We would like you to consider each capital and choose 1 fashion designer from each that you appreciate and/ or admire. They can be similar or very separate in their aesthetic. We would then like you to produce 4 individual considered mood boards that celebrate each designer you have chosen. These should detail their aesthetic, their key looks and images that celebrate their label across the collections. We would also like you to write a paragraph on each designer and why you chose them what is it about them that appeals to you, what do they do well, why do they inspire you and what you feel is their signature look?
