CHAPTER 1: THE BENEFITS OF PACKING LIGHT Anyone can learn to downsize their luggage and pack light. Let me show you how!

I CAN T PACK LIGHT Does the thought of packing for a trip in just one little carry-on bag seem like an absolutely impossible task? I know how you feel. I used to be an overpacker. I spent years observing travelers that used one small carry-on bag on their adventures around the world. I always told myself I want to be like them. One day, I want to travel light. In my quest to accomplish this goal I planned and tested endless methods to see what worked and what didn t. I made countless mistakes and learned valuable lessons through trial and error. I interviewed numerous travelers that I encountered around the globe and asked them their secrets while learning many of my own. And now, I am going to share these tips with you. I am proud to say that after four years of full time travel, I have spent the past two years traveling between Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and Central America with only a carry-on. Thanks to the tips found in this book, I hope women around the world will learn how to travel lighter (and smarter). You can, too.

WHY PACK LIGHT? Travel is more Enjoyable. Affordable. CONVENIENT. And traveling with carry-on luggage isn t just about saving money on baggage fees. At the end of a long trip, do you want to trudge through five airport connections to get to the other side of the world, all while dragging a bag through endless airport terminals? You see, traveling with carry-on luggage isn t just about saving money; it s about having a more positive travel experience. The heavier and larger your bag, the more uncomfortable your experience. Every ounce of weight in your bag feels like tons after you ve been on the road for a while. Once you ve picked up, unpacked, and repacked your luggage through a few towns and cities, you ll start wishing you had packed absolutely nothing. This goes for all travelers. For travelers with suitcases, oversized luggage can pose an even larger issue than for backpackers picking up a suitcase is more awkward and difficult than a backpack, especially if it s oversized. If you re traveling for business, you will most likely also be carrying your laptop bag to carry your electronics, adding even more weight. Imagine carrying your suitcase by its tiny upper handle up three flights of stairs or lifting it up every time you find a gaping hole in the middle of the sidewalk.

Even if you re on a coach tour around nicely paved first-world Europe, you still have to lug your bag out of the coach and into your hotel room each and every night. Let s face it, if you re on a tour you're probably moving even faster than backpackers with the hopes of seeing as many locations in as little time as possible, making a giant suitcase an utter drag literally. (If your trip has you staying in places with bellhops and porters that do the lifting for you, these points may not apply.) This is one occasion where size isn t the only thing that matters weight matters, too. Are there any positives to carrying a larger bag? Perhaps the benefit of traveling with a larger bag is that you have more clothing options. However, how many women actually wear all the clothing in their closet? By carefully creating a capsule wardrobe and planning ahead, you only need to pack what you need. What exactly is a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a small selection of clothing items that are interchangeable, allowing you to maximize the outfits you can create. Read on to learn about how to create a capsule wardrobe for travel and never check a bag again!

CHAPTER 2: PLANNING A CAPSULE TRAVEL WARDROBE Planning a compact travel wardrobe is easier than you think. Follow these five easy guidelines, and your days of checking in heavy, oversized luggage will be in the past!

RESEARCH YOUR DESTINATION To ensure that your packing choices are as accurate as possible, gain a general understanding of the cities you'll be visiting, the weather you'll expect per season and the most appropriate items to wear when on vacation. It s best to blend in with the locals and avoid wearing clothing that pegs you as a tourist. Keep cultural sensitivities and religious traditions in mind when choosing your clothing; be respectful of the culture in the country you are visiting. At the end of the chapter you will find information on Dressing for Conservative Countries. TRAVEL ACTIVITIES Think about what you will be doing on your trip and where you will spend the majority of your time. Will you be doing mostly sightseeing and walking? Outdoor adventure activities? Lounging on the beach? Temple tomb raiding? Or a little bit of everything? Plan your clothing by selecting items that provide optimal versatility for a varied itinerary. A good top is one that can be dressed up in the city, worn casually for outdoor activities, and layered under other clothing for extra warmth. Ideal travel pants can be worn to trek, to sightsee, and for nice meals. BUDGET When on the quest to pack light, it s worth spending money on quality items. Think about it as an investment. If you do it right the first time, you can re-use your items every trip. You also have the comfort in knowing your most important items

won t fall apart if they re good quality. You don't have to spend a fortune on every item, but certain pieces are worth the cash: Luggage Outerwear Travel Pants (if applicable) Merino Wool Thermals (for cold weather) Shoes WEATHER Whether it s 1 week or 10 months, the amount of time you ll spend in each climate will also help you decide how much and what type of clothing you need for each destination. If you re going to one destination, your choice of clothing is easier, as you only have to plan for one season. If you intend on visiting multiple destinations with varied climates, consider the weather as you plan your travel itinerary. If you like snow activities and cooler weather, plan your trip to coincide with a country s winter season. If you're a beach bum or outdoors enthusiast, you probably want to schedule your trip based on spring and summer. If a trip has varied climates, make sure all of your clothing mixes and matches so you can layer accordingly and make use of every single item. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP FOR LONG TRIPS: When you plan an extended trip with a special activity or drastic change in season, you may go weeks or months before needing a particular item or set of clothes. You have to ask yourself what convenience is worth to you. Would you rather lug a bunch of gear around for the duration of your trip until you finally use it, or can you set aside some cash to purchase adequate clothing when you get to that part of your trip? Please refer to Chapter Four to learn How to Pack for Multi-climate Trips.

LENGTH OF TRIP A common misconception for travelers is that the longer your trip, the more you need to pack. In fact, you should plan to pack the same for one week as one month -- or even one year. By carefully selecting your travel clothing choices, you can create a capsule wardrobe that can be mixed and matched in a variety of ways, ensuring you have numerous travel outfits appropriate for many settings. Let s do some Travel Fashion math: If you pack 6 tops and 4 bottoms, you have 24 ensembles on rotation. That s 3 weeks worth of travel outfits with just 10 pieces of clothing! Who knew?

WHAT TO WEAR IN CONSERVATIVE COUNTRIES (Originally published on BlondeTraveler.com) You should always be mindful and respectful of local customs. The general rule for conservative areas is to cover your knees and your shoulders. In very religious places, your elbows and ankles may need to be fully hidden. Whether the modest clothing should be worn countryside or in specific regions, you can still be stylish with adequate coverage. Keep these tips in mind, especially when visiting temples and other religious areas. PASHMINA SHAWL A scarf is by far one of the most popular accessories for traveling fashionistas. It offers you added style without needing to over pack. Always carry one large scarf or Pashmina shawl in a light fabric. A shawl is an essential item that allows you to cover up and stay cool without wearing heavy clothing. Wear it over a tank top, ensuring that your shoulders are covered, or in addition to a longer sleeve shirt. A scarf can also cover up lowercut blouses to avoid exposing cleavage. Choose one or two scarves that are big enough to cover your shoulders and chest. A print or splash of color has the added bonus of sprucing up travel outfits. MAXI SKIRT Long maxi skirts are great because they are fashionable and ideal for travel. You can dress them up or down - they provide you with the versatility needed for a long trip.

These are great travel skirts because they cover your knees and ankles, allowing you to dress respectfully when entering religious buildings or conservative regions. Choose an opaque fabric that is light and does take too much room in your bag. Try on the skirt outdoors before you travel and ask someone to check if it s translucent in the natural light to avoid any cultural faux pas. LONG SLEEVE BUTTON UP A long sleeve shirt is a necessity for most trips. The benefits of packing one that buttons up is that it offers the versatility of a light jacket or a breathable tank top cover. Many conservative areas require that you conceal your shoulders in addition to your knees. This type of top makes it easy for you to layer when necessary and remove when no longer needed. Choose a quality shirt in a solid color that can mix and match easily with the rest of your travel wardrobe. With a little effort, you can still look stylish when wearing modest clothing. Be selective of the items in your bag and make sure all clothes can be worn in several settings, including conservative areas.

CHAPTER 3: HOW TO CHOOSE CLOTHING FOR YOUR CAPSULE TRAVEL WARDROBE Once you ve done your destination research, determined the weather in the regions you plan to visit, and thought about the activities you plan to do, go through your closet and select items that you feel will work for your trip. Lay everything out and assess each item individually keeping these four guidelines in mind: 1. Fabric 2. Fit and Style 3. Color 4. Outfit Combinations

❶ FABRIC Fabrics play the most important role in the selection process because they give you insight on the functionality of an item. When considering clothing, ask yourself the following questions: THICKNESS: How thick is the fabric? Can it be folded and rolled into a small bundle? Will it be too warm or cold for your destination? WEIGHT: Is it heavy or bulky? Will it take up too much room and weight in your luggage? QUICK DRY: Is it a synthetic that can dry quickly or is it cotton that will take long to dry? TRANSPARENCY: Is it too sheer, requiring a camisole or slip paired underneath? WRINKLES: Will this fabric wrinkle easily? Do you have to iron it? DURABILITY: Will it endure your planned activities? VERSATILITY: Will the fabric go well with the rest of your clothing? By considering each of these factors, you can eliminate many options and focus on the select few that make sense for your trip. You also can make the most of your everyday clothes without buying new technical travel clothing. (Unless of course you are specifically participating in a trekking or mountaineering adventure when travel clothing is relevant and necessary.) TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Many synthetic fabrics smell a lot less after several wears, allowing constant use without strong odors. Cotton absorbs sweat and scents; it consequently requires more washing. It also loses its shape over time, especially if hand-washing.

HOW TO CHOOSE FABRICS FOR TRAVEL (Written by Chantelle Mallin) Choosing the best fabrics is all part of the process of selecting the right travel clothing. Follow these guidelines to pick the best pieces for your trip. FABRICS FOR TRAVEL IN THE COLD WOOL Pure wool is like a super fabric, it has the ability to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. It retains warm air and keeps moisture out, keeping you nice and toasty. Disadvantages? Wool becomes heavy when wet and takes forever to dry. Choose merino wool for optimal use and quick dry performance. POLAR FLEECE A high-tech synthetic fabric partly made from recycled bottles and an alternative for people who don t wear animal by-products. It is lighter than wool and offers better insulation, yet remains warm when wet and dries fast. Fleece comes in a variety of thickness and colors. THINSULATE A highly insulating fabric that catches air between you and the elements the more air it traps, the warmer you ll be. Thinsulate is a thin, yet warm fabric, a welcome break from thick, bulky winter coats. POLYESTER Prevalent in most outdoor clothing, the fabric s strongly woven fibers and occasional chemical coating stops moisture from getting through, keeping you nice and snug. GORE-TEX Used in a variety of outdoor clothing such as hiking boots and parkas, this high-tech fabric is perfected to allow moisture to escape the body while remaining waterproof and promoting a Guaranteed to Keep You Dry promise. Garments made from GORE-TEX can be quite pricey. However, if you spend a lot of time in extreme weather, it s worth the investment. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Don t forget to layer! Invest in a pair of thermal underwear, lightweight and guaranteed to keep you delightfully warm.

FABRICS FOR TRAVEL IN THE HEAT RAYON Made from wood pulp, rayon is one of the most absorbent fabrics and a good conductor of heat, making it a preferred fabric for summer climates. Specific types of rayon include lyocell, modal, and viscose. SILK - Lightweight, breathable and durable - not to mention luxuriously soft - it makes the ideal summer fabric. Please note: repeated exposure to the sun can erode the fibers. COTTON 100% cotton clothing is ideal for the tropics as it feels soft, lightweight, and lets your body heat escape. It s worth noting that ultrathin cotton fabrics tend to wrinkle, while the thicker ones tend to stretch if hand-washed or shrink when machine dried. LINEN Sturdy and resilient, linen is one of the best-suited fabrics for summer. It s stiff, but doesn t cling to the body. Linen absorbs perspiration and dries quickly. It does, however, wrinkle easily, so go for a blend. WOOL Not only does it keep you warm in winter, but it also keeps you cool in the summer. It has the capability to absorb moisture from your skin and release it into the air, which means you stay dry. Choose merino wool for optimal performance and a fabric that dries quickly. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Beat the heat and wear white and light-colored fabrics that reflect the sun. QUICK-DRY FABRICS Wet clothing provides little insulation, which is a nightmare in cold or tropical (wet) environments. Look out for fabrics that are quick drying such as:

POLYESTER A strong, durable and wrinkle resistant fabric that dries very quickly, polyester does not absorb moisture, meaning it can get humid when worn in warm weather. However, polyester blends feel light, dry quickly, and are widely available in many stylish clothing options. NYLON The fabric dries quickly and dirt does not cling, making it an easily washed fabric, perfect for travel. Similar to polyester, it can be humid and clammy in the heat. COOLMAX A high performance fabric that keeps the body dry by moving sweat away from the body to the outer layer of the fabric, COOLMAX is one of the fastest drying fabrics. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Fast drying fabrics are key for capsule wardrobes when you have less clothing and must wash more frequently (plus they tend to be lightweight helping to keep that luggage scale low)! WRINKLE-RESISTANT FABRICS Who doesn t hate ironing? Finding clothing made from fabric less prone to wrinkles is just wonderful (and such a time saver). Look out for fabrics such as polyester, nylon, Lycra, knitted fabrics, and denim. Also, clothing made for cold weather tends not to wrinkle as much as fabrics made for the heat. However, heat releases wrinkles, so you don t always have to worry about walking around with a disheveled look. Worth a note Use the bundle-wrapping method when packing to remove the folds that cause creasing. If a few stubborn wrinkles remain, hang the garment in the bathroom while you take a shower; the steam will help smooth the creases. If wrinkles drive you crazy or you travel for business, pack a travel iron or steamer if you stay in accommodation that doesn t offer it.

TOP PICKS DENIM Although denim receives criticism as bad fabric for travel, it's actually perfect for travel in cold or mild climates. It matches with all your clothing and can be dressed up or down, which is ideal for the minimalist travel wardrobe. It's also fairly wrinkle resistant, moisture absorbing, and hardly needs to be washed. What more can you ask for?

❷ FIT AND STYLE Carefully assess the fit and style of each item of clothing after examining its fabric, and ask yourself the following questions: ACTIVITIES: Does it work in different settings? Part of the fun of traveling is exploring everything a city has to offer. From treks and temples to restaurants and nightlife, your clothing has to work in a variety of settings. Err on the side of caution and choose clothing that is stylish but not overly revealing. A maxi dress can be worn practically anywhere but a low neckline can t. A button up blouse is versatile, but if it s too sheer it might be too revealing. Short shorts may look cute, but how short is too short? Always pack a few conservative options that can be worn when entering religious sites or traveling to less touristy areas such as those mentioned in the previous chapter: What to Wear in Conservative Countries. MULTIPURPOSE: Can I use it on more than one occasion? Versatility is key! Every item in your bag should have multiple uses and you should be able to wear your clothing items in various settings. While a sexy cocktail dress would be great just in case you got invited somewhere really nice, pack a more adaptable option that can be dressed up or down for optimum versatility. Avoid just in case items at all costs!

An item does not need to be a convertible piece for it to serve multi-purpose. Consider this example: Convertible pants may seem great they re a 2-in-1. However, they don t match well with regular clothing and shoes making them inconvenient when you re not trekking. Many women find them unflattering and don t want to wear them. Leggings, however, can be worn as thermals under pants for added warmth, as pajamas, to workout, to trek, as pants, or to wear under dresses in conservative countries. Why pack it if you don t like it? Pack items that you do like because you ll be more likely to actually wear them and they won t be a waste of space in your bag. Envision the different scenarios where your clothing can be used and leave it at home if it can t be used on more than one occasion.

PACKING LIGHT: Will this take up a lot of space in my bag? Before you purchase an item or select one from your own closet, roll it up and see how much space it occupies. If it s bulky, consider taking a more compact item. Even in colder climates, the key is to layer your clothing rather than pack items that are bulky. However, if the item can be used frequently and it can mix and match with many of your other travel clothing choices; it doesn t necessarily mean you shouldn t pack it. Jeans, for example, can be bulky and heavy, but the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Travel organizers such as packing cubes and compression sacks can help compress even bulky items like jeans and jackets, but try to choose lighter pieces that you can layer when possible. QUICK DRY: Will this take ages to dry? Clothing materials that dry quickly are beneficial because they tend to pack lighter and they re also easy to wash when you re constantly on the move. Just because a label says it has quick dry fabric, it doesn t mean it works. Likewise, just because your regular clothing isn t travel specific, it doesn t mean the fabric won t dry quickly. You d be surprised how much of the clothing you already own dries quickly. Give your clothing a test before you leave on a trip! TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Wash the clothing you want to take and let it dry indoors in the bathroom. If it takes longer than 24 hours, it may not be the best choice.

For more information, read Chapter Two on Choosing the Best Fabrics for Travel for basic guidelines. As a general rule, if you plan on packing less than ten clothing items, make sure the majority of your clothing can dry quickly because your options are more limited. TRAVEL OUTFITS: Does it mix and match with the other travel clothing I ve selected? With limited clothing options, it s important to maximize your travel wardrobe. Choose each item very carefully and plan clothing that s interchangeable. Determine whether or not your clothing can mix and match and test out the different combinations that can be made with your choices. You can read further details on planning travel outfits in section 4 of this chapter: Travel Outfits.

QUALITY: Is it durable? Consider the life cycle of a clothing item you use at home. Even inexpensive items can last years if you only wear them occasionally. When you travel, however, your clothing works extra hard due to constant use and varying washing methods. Pack travel clothing that is in good condition and not overly worn. Even if you re on a long trip and want to give your clothing items away at the end, don t worry, they ll be more than used by that time. There s no point in starting off with tattered clothing. Also, locals take pride in their appearance. You should, too! Keep in mind that after you re on the road for a while, you may get tired of wearing the same thing over and over. Choose items that will not fall apart after a few washes, but items with a price tag you are comfortable giving up. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: It s normal to have to or want to replace items on long trips, but you don t want this to happen immediately. Be prepared to buy a few new pieces here and there to freshen up your wardrobe. If you pack travel clothing that doesn t work Don t forget, if you choose an item (or several) that you find were not the best choices, you can always replace them. Don t invest more money in clothing than you care to give away. If you pack clothing that doesn t work you have a few options: 1. Carry it around for your entire trip. 2. Pay to send it home if it s worth the price of shipping. 3. Donate it to a local or another traveler because one s trash is another s treasure.

❸ COLOR One of the most important aspects of traveling as a minimalist is to pack interchangeable clothing. Sticking to one color story is the easiest way to achieve that. Simple color solution: For a simplified capsule travel wardrobe, choose one neutral shade and one color story then mix and match! What is a neutral shade? A color that can match with anything such as black, gray, white, cream, khaki, or brown. What s a color story? Colors classified into similar groups such as pastels, primary, and brights. Play it safe and stick to neutral shades paired with vibrant accessories or go bold and use a complementary color palette with corresponding prints. No matter which way you decide, ensure that your clothes can mix and match with ease. Black and gray work well in cold climates and creams and khakis keep you fresh in the heat. Add pops of color with bright scarves and other accessories. Choosing one color story is especially important when packing for cold destinations when layering is crucial. Remember to use the three layer rule: base layer, thermal layer, and shell. If you re not good with color: Unless you like the look of an all-black wardrobe (which some do), alternate two contrasting colors like black and cream or brown and beige then add accents of color. A fun way to mix and match clothing for travel is to choose a printed accessory such as a scarf or tie and work your outfits around this piece. Choose shades in hues that will complement each other and not clash. You want to make sure that each item you pack goes with the rest especially if your plan is to pack light. Test out each top and bottom and make sure they go well together don t forget your shoes! One color story doesn t mean one color or one shade. A color story includes varying colors in the same pallet such as pastels, brights, or primary colors. Pair either of these with neutrals for maximum use.

TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: If you are going to spend much time in the sun, choose colors that will flatter your new tan.

A GUIDE TO COORDINATING COLORS (Written by Chantelle Mallin) Styling colors can seem daunting; can red and green really never be seen? What can you style with that tricky sunshine yellow top? People find it easier to stick to safe neutrals or simple blacks, however, your travels are the perfect time to dust off the summer brights, no hue is off limit! This easy guide to color matching will have you straying away from the go to greys and grabbing for your favorite vibrant pieces, well-chosen colors can be one of the best ways to make your outfits stand out; simple color rules can help you style and accessorize an editorial worthy look in seconds. This simple rainbow circle of colors and a few nifty rules can provide you with the tools serve as a grown up guide to matching colors.

THE FOLLOWING TIPS MATCH DIFFERENT HUES FOR A HARMONIOUS COLOR ENSEMBLE. MONOCHROMATIC COLORS: Mono, meaning one and chroma, meaning color, simply means creating a look consisting of only one base color, varying in shades of light and dark, for example - a color scheme of cerise, fuchsia, salmon and coral work together to create a monochromatic collection. Dressing in one color can be seen as lackluster and basic, but not if you vary the tint, if executed correctly the look appears chic and crisp, giving the body an elongated and streamline appearance, bonus! If all one color seems a bit much to you, break up the ensemble with white or black pieces, giving the outfit a cleaner, more confident look.

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS: Complementary colors are colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel; the dual scheme gives a striking color block effect and is probably best undertaken by the fashion confident. If you re dying to give it a try, start by pairing complementary colors in small amounts, such as adding a piece of statement jewelry for that desirable pop of color. For example, if your outfit consists of mainly blue hues, choose a statement necklace or oversized bag in warm orange for that perfect color pairing. Other complementary color pairings include lipstick red and garden green (it turns out they can be seen), or luscious lemon and royal purple.

ANALOGOUS COLORS: Analogous colors are the hues next to each other on the color wheel; the shades are pretty similar, they are easy to mix and match and therefore create a melodic and cohesive look. As the colors used in an analogous pallet have the least amount contrast, it s a great place to start in your color co-ordinate mission; the result is sophisticated and often very pleasing to the eye. When styling the colors, it s a great idea to choose one dominant color and use the other as a subtle accent. Stock up on colorful jewelry and accessories to easily mix and match with your outfit creating a varied look each time.

ACCENT COLORS: An accent hue is a color used in small quantities to add emphasis to a demure color scheme. A complementary color that is bright and vibrant is perfect for people initially scared of using strong colors. Adding an accent color is great for occasions where you desire a more subtle and traditional look, but still crave that splash of color. Keep a neutral palette by using colors such as black, navy or cream and then add just a hint of color in the right place - think statement bag, jewelry or jacket.

FINAL TIPS: This guide is merely an introduction; there are thousands of possible color combinations that work. Take in your travel surroundings and be inspired the unexpected color palettes around you.

❹ TRAVEL OUTFITS Planning your travel outfits is key. It s shocking to arrive at your destination and realize that your chosen pieces of clothing don t go together. Spend some time playing dress up ensuring that not only the colors coordinate with each other, but the style of the item does, too. You may find that the length of a shirt fits poorly when paired with your trousers of choice or that the fabric of your skirt is too dressy when paired with your casual tops. Also, don t forget to pair your clothing with your travel shoes to see the final look. Shoes are, by far, the most challenging aspect of the packing process. Creating your outfits in advance is especially important if you tend to overpack. You ll be incredibly surprised at how many outfits you can create with just ten pieces of clothing. Let s do some Travel Fashion math! If you have 7 tops and 3 bottoms you can create 21 outfits. If you have 6 tops and 4 bottoms you can make 24 outfits. In the next example, we create 26 travel outfits from a capsule wardrobe featuring only 9 clothing items:

Travel Stylist Tip: Button up blouses offer additional outfit combinations! You can find more examples in the next chapter: Choose Your Capsule Wardrobe Essentials.

GUIDELINES FOR CREATING SUCCESSFUL TRAVEL OUTFITS Choose classic cuts that can be worn in different settings. Ideal fabrics are those that can be worn casually or dressed up if needed. A plain cotton top can be worn with cargos to sightsee during the day and can be spruced up with a skirt and accessories at night. Avoid packing clothes that are trend driven or have distinctive detailing. A nice classic V-neck T-shirt appears more contemporary than one with a logo and will look just as good with denim shorts on the beach or with dressier pants for dinner. Carefully assess every item you plan to pack. Consider its style, color, and quality. Make sure each item is in good shape and that the material won t fall apart after a few washes. Each item in your suitcase should be multifunctional. By sticking to simple clothing that isn t categorized for use on one specific occasion, you open up your styling options, allowing you to mix and match your limited travel wardrobe. Select clothing that can be worn with every other piece in your travel wardrobe. You may love a particular top, but if it can only be paired with one other item it s not the right choice for your trip. Don t just throw any old thing in your travel bag or fall into the trap of packing only disposable items you don t care about. When you don t have too many clothing options, the last thing you want is to have a poor choice of tattered clothing. Select quality threads. Any Fashionista will tell you that accessories make or break an outfit. For a traveler, the extra touches you add will be the difference between first class and coach. For women, a set of jewelry doesn t take up too much room but can make the world of difference when combined with a simple cotton dress. Add a silky scarf and you achieve instant sophistication.

It s also important to pack a set of shoes that are versatile, comfortable, and appropriate in nicer settings. Three is the golden number when it comes to shoes. Save one of those numbers for a dressier shoe option. Give your shoes a quick once-over with a baby wipe before heading out--it can do wonders. 41 CHAPTER 4: CHOOSE YOUR CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS Follow these guidelines to determine what type of clothing you should pack for your trip and create your own capsule wardrobe.

SUMMER CAPSULE WARDROBE 10 Main Items: 5 Tops + 3 Bottoms + 2 Dresses This sample capsule wardrobe for summer features ten items to act as either the core of the clothing you pack or as the only clothes you pack. You can pack as little as ten items of clothing and have enough travel outfits to last for three weeks of travel as you ll see on the next page. Depending on your preferences you can choose more bottoms, less dresses, more tops you have the ability to adjust the combination based on your needs. The outfit you wear on the plane should be a part of your core travel wardrobe. However, pajamas, workout clothing, or outerwear should be counted as additional items.

SUMMER TRAVEL OUTFITS

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE 10 Main Items: 5 Tops + 3 Bottoms + 2 Dresses For winter, your core travel wardrobe works similarly to summer. However, you ll also need to layer a coat over your clothing, thermals underneath, and warm accessories. In total this sample includes fifteen clothing items, but the core is still your initial ten pieces. On the next page you ll find travel outfits for three weeks using the tops, skirts, and dresses. Coats, thermals, tights, and other accessories would be layered over and under the outfits as needed.

WINTER TRAVEL OUTFITS

TOPS Your selection of tops will vary greatly depending on the time of year in which you travel. It s always best to pack more tops than bottoms because a top will create more of an impact to your outfit. CAPSULE WARDROBE TOPS FOR SUMMER 4 Sleeveless/Short Sleeves + 1 Long Sleeve When choosing tops for a warm weather or summer trip, pack a variety of sleeve lengths for ideal versatility in lightweight fabrics. For example, 2 sleeveless, 2 short sleeves, and 1 long sleeve. Many lightweight cotton fabrics can wrinkle easily. It s best to find blouses made from synthetic blends such as rayon and polyester. You have more flexibility with prints and color for tops in warm weather because you don t have to worry about layering them together. In fact, in certain areas, high heat and humidity make layering downright uncomfortable. If a shirt has a sheer or translucent material, then you will possibly need to wear a camisole underneath. It s best to avoid these styles as each under layer increases your packing count. If you don t feel comfortable with sleeveless tops, pack 2 short sleeve, 2 ¾ sleeve, and 1 long sleeve. You can also wear a light wrap around your shoulders for extra coverage based on your comfort level or destination needs. One of the most versatile tops for travel is a button up shirt. It can be worn alone; layered; used as a light jacket; tied at the waist; used as a vest if sleeveless; and worn as a kaftan at the beach. The styling of the traditional button up or Oxford shirt automatically gives you a more polished look whether you re trekking in a jungle or sipping a martini in a swanky bar. If you like strapless tops, consider getting a convertible style that also works as a skirt to help you maximize your travel wardrobe. It will allow you to have an extra bottom piece which can be a big help when packing light. Whether you

choose a solid or a print is up to you, just remember that you have to match it with other tops when worn as a skirt. CAPSULE WARDROBE TOPS FOR WINTER 5 Long Sleeves (plus thermal underlayer as needed) The key for winter or cold weather travel is to choose pieces that don t take up too much space and can be worn together if the temperature drops or you require more warmth. The tops you choose should meet the following requirements: similar color palette, the ability to mix and match, and they must be able to layer. Merino wool is the perfect fabric for the winter because it offers maximum warmth in a thin fabric, reducing the bulk and weight of your gear. It s available in thermals or regular clothing, too. Cashmere is a nice option for city travel. Always pack a set of thermals that you can wear under everything. The best ones are an investment because you can wear them constantly without needing to wash them every day. They will also help retain heat and wick moisture to keep you dry.

Avoid cotton as your first layer in the cold. If you sweat, it will keep the moisture next to your skin, making you cold. You need the clothing layer closest to your skin to wick moisture away so your top layers and coat can do their job and keep you warm. In the cold, a good combination of fabric thickness for tops is 3 thin and 2 medium long sleeves, in addition to your one thermal top and two outerwear pieces. Women s tunics are a great option for travel. Any top that is of longer length and falls below your hips can be used as a tunic. These are the ideal tops to pair with leggings because of their length they cover up areas that may otherwise be too exposed. They maximize your travel wardrobe because you can pair them over pants and leggings as a long, casual shirt and you can also tuck them in for a more polished look. In the cold, wear a long sweater or long knit top as a tunic over leggings or tights. In the summer, tunics make a great shield from the sun and can double up as kaftans on the beach. You can even pair them with a short skirt for a dresslike look.

BOTTOMS For both warm and cold weather travel, the bottoms you choose should be able to mix and match with all the tops and the fabric should be appropriate for the weather. CAPSULE WARDROBE BOTTOMS IN THE SUMMER 2 Trousers + 1 Skirt/Shorts For summer or warm weather travel, the bottoms you choose depends greatly on your destination and your personal style. If you like showing your legs a pair of shorts is always a must - dressy for city travel and casual for the beach. Denim shorts are very easy to wear, don't require much washing, and offer you an effortlessly stylish look. Shorts and skirts are great alternatives to pants in warmer countries, especially the ultra-versatile and chic maxi skirt. Swap your shorts for a maxi skirt if you re going to a conservative country, but by all means bring out the denim shorts if you re after fun in the sun. The length of the shorts you choose should be based on both your comfort level and the modesty required at your destination. An airy maxi skirt is great for the summer. There's no better option for comfort and to beat the heat. Try to stick to lighter fabrics that roll into a small bundle when packed. Be mindful that many lightweight fabrics can be translucent; avoid skirts that are overly transparent. When choosing a skirt, consider a convertible option that turns into a top or dress or both. Unlike trousers, this is one piece of convertible clothing that can look really cute and stylish while helping you pack light. Now you need a set of trousers. These can be thin and stretchy jeans, casual trousers, travel pants and or polyester loungewear style pants. Choose what goes with your style, activities, and destination. Many women prefer to wear jeans on their trips. Although they may weigh more than other trousers and take up additional space, you can wear jeans with anything, practically anywhere. For warm weather or trip of a longer length, opt

for lighter fabrics with stretch that can give you the benefits of denim without weighing down your bag. Dress them up with sexy stilettos, rock them out with combat boots, or wear them casually with your favorite trainers. For more active and varied activities, a set of proper travel pants might be your answer. There s nothing more convenient when going on a trek or spending time in a humid climate than a pair of breathable and quick dry pants, especially when you pack light and need quick access to your clothing. Don t despair: there s no reason why you have to wear an unattractive convertible style just to reap the benefits. Clothing companies are evolving and so are their cuts. Fitness and yoga brands now offer attractive styles you can wear when you travel. Check out Anatomie Wear that offers chic and practical designer travel clothes. CAPSULE WARDROBE BOTTOMS IN THE WINTER 2 Trousers + 1 Skirt (plus thermal underlayer as needed) For winter, there's no doubt about it. Jeans are the way to go for every part of the globe. Pack 1-2 pairs depending on your needs. Trousers with stretch fabrics offer you versatility and comfort. Go with a solid black you can wear with everything. From the flight to sightseeing and dressed up for dinner, you can't go wrong with these. Leggings are one of the most flexible options for travel. They re lightweight, comfortable, can be worn as layers, used for workouts, worn to sleep, and even act as a pair of trousers. If you choose a fitness brand, they can easily replace travel pants on a trek. If you find a more tailored style in a thicker fabric, they can act as trousers. Leggings can be worn under skirts, shorts, and pants, and can be removed if the weather gets too warm when the sun comes out. Likewise, you can slip them back on when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. No matter which trousers you choose in the winter, the trick is to layer. Pair any trousers including jeans with thermals, leggings, or tights underneath for optimal warmth. Layer additional items underneath as needed.

For winter travel, pack 1-2 pairs of jeans plus additional trousers of your choice. 3-4 bottoms are a good total amount plus 1-2 layers for you to wear underneath. Remember, you hardly have to wash merino wool so it s worthwhile to have one set of these thermals to wear under everything. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: You can still wear shorts, dresses, and skirts when it's cold, just add a layer (or two) underneath! If you want to wear skirts, thick knits and leather are a stylish option you can pair with tights and boots for chic city travel.

DRESSES CAPSULE WARDROBE DRESSES IN THE SUMMER 2 Dresses CAPSULE WARDROBE DRESSES IN THE WINTER (Optional) 2 Dresses or 1 Skirt + 1 Dress Nothing s fresher than a dress in the summer, especially when humidity hits alltime highs. The trick is in the fabric. Dresses offer you an easy way to feel feminine and fashionable with the least amount of thought. Just throw on a dress and you're good to go! Wear a dress alone in the Spring for a carefree look or pair with a jacket and leggings for a cool Autumn day. Expand your options by packing two dresses: short and long lengths. Dressier" fabrics tend to wrinkle less and can keep you cool and fresh. Make sure that at least one can be dressed up, whether it's a classic cut or a little black dress. You know what works for you. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Dresses are the easiest way to create a low maintenance and a feminine travel outfit. For trips to warm climates, you can even pack only dresses and have a completely unique outfit every day with no thought required. A dress is the one item you don t have to mix and match with other clothing so you have two color options: pack a classic LBD or bring out the rainbow with a color blast! You can never go wrong with a Little Black Dress. For the most diverse options, choose a medium length style in a classic cut. Make sure the fabric works with both casual and dressy environments. By default, the color black automatically looks more elegant and formal so even if your dress is considered more day time, with a few accessories you can turn it up a notch and make it look sophisticated for the evening.

Don t like black? Choose your favorite color following the same basic principles. Taupe is a neutral that looks chic day or night. Alternatively, if a deep red or vibrant blue is more your thing, then that s your version of an LBD that works for you. Remember, the most important packing tip is to choose clothing you love and feel great wearing! A maxi dress is at the top of the list for ideal travel dresses because it is ankle length, comfortable, and elegant. If chosen in a lightweight synthetic blend fabric, you can easily wear this dress to be comfortable on long transportation journeys, in temples and regions where modesty is encouraged, for a long stroll in a small village or a big city, dressed up for a nice dinner, and worn casually at the beach. Talk about versatile, practical, and cute, too! Layer it with leggings and a long sleeve for a chic winter look or wear it alone with a fedora and sandals in the summer. Something to keep in mind with dresses: Although you may hesitate to pack an item like a maxi dress that has more fabric and consequently takes up more space, if you wear it all the time, it compensates for the need to pack several items that may not be as versatile. Remember, you can always replace clothing during your travels if you are tired of an item or decide that you don t like it, especially on a long trip. When choosing to travel with the minimum, consider a convertible dress/skirt or a maxi skirt that you can easily hike up to convert into a dress. Pack 2-3 dresses for warm weather travel and one dress or skirt in the cold (optional). TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Maximize your shorter dresses by wearing them as tops! Tuck them into your bottoms for more travel outfit options.

OUTERWEAR CAPSULE WARDROBE OUTERWEAR IN THE SUMMER 1-2 Lightweight Pieces CAPSULE WARDROBE OUTERWEAR IN THE WINTER 1 Outer Layer + 1 Middle Layer When in a cold environment, your jacket or coat is the most visible part of your wardrobe. Choosing a jacket is like choosing a dress: go with a neutral color that will match all your clothing or select a vibrant color that will breathe some life into your basic travel wardrobe. When it comes to outerwear, it s a good idea to choose two items you can layer. For cities, a classic coat in a medium fabric with a knit sweater or cotton hoodie will see to it that you re warm and can blend in with the locals. For adventure trips that include outdoor activities, a waterproof jacket paired with a fleece will insulate you and also provide the benefits of high performance fabrics. For a beachside holiday, choose a light jacket and cardigan. Determining whether or not you need a rain jacket for your trip depends on your planned activities and if the weather is cold or hot. In a tropical monsoon, the last thing you want to wear is a waterproof rain jacket that will leave you steamy with perspiration. If you re planning a trek, a lightweight, quality waterproof jacket is ideal. Many people buy a poncho when trekking to keep their backpack dry, regardless of whether or not they brought a jacket. The combination of the two may make you feel muggy and uncomfortable in certain weather.

PACKING FOR THE COLD: 3 LAYER SYSTEM When you re packing for the cold, plan to use the 3 layer system: 1 Long Sleeve (base) + 1 Warm Item (thermal) + 1 Waterproof (shell) BASE LAYER: You want your first layer (the one closest to your skin) to wick moisture off your body and keep you dry and sweat-free. Polyester or synthetic fibers work best for this and merino wool is ideal. Avoid cotton because it absorbs sweat, which keeps you moist and cold. THERMAL LAYER: The middle layer should be a warm item such as a sweater, fleece, or hoodie. Wool is an amazing natural fiber, because it naturally repels moisture and is great for wet climates. SHELL: Your outer layer is your jacket or coat. Make sure it is waterproof to protect you from the rain and wind. When choosing cold weather clothing, plan on layering your clothing and choose fabrics that provide warmth without bulk. For tops, pack thin, quality long sleeve tops you can pair with your two outerwear pieces. For bottoms, make sure to wear leggings and/or tights under jeans or trousers for extra warmth. If you re going to an extremely cold destination or are not accustomed to the weather, it s a good idea to invest in a set of thermals that can also be worn as leggings/a long sleeve top underneath your clothing. If you are only spending a small amount of time in cold weather or if you re unsure if you will encounter cold weather on your trip, pack only the essentials: two outerwear items PLUS two additional items: a long sleeve top and leggings. By packing outerwear of good quality, you can keep warm until you buy more clothing, if necessary. If you find that you need warmer clothing for your trip, you can buy a few pieces at your destination, including hat and gloves. Buy a few items that will keep you warm and will also make a great souvenir!

Also, by purchasing items at the destination, you ll get a product suitable for that location. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Merino wool thermals are worth the investment. They keep you warm and dry, and don t have to be washed very often.

PACKING FOR MULTI-CLIMATE TRIPS Here are three packing strategies focusing on climate changes based on your travel itinerary or the direction in which you travel: IF YOU'RE TRAVELING FROM COLD TO HOT CLIMATES If you start your trip in the winter season or in a destination with a cool climate, you can base the majority of your travel clothing on cold weather, focusing on warm layers and quality outerwear. Once you make your way to the warmer part of your trip, you can ditch your heavier or knit items and replace with a few summer essentials along the way. Send your cold weather clothing back home or donate it. You won t need to buy much because you don t need as much clothing in the heat. Summer clothing is usually cheaper, too, and won t do as much damage to your travel budget. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: No matter what, you always want to hold on to your two quality outerwear pieces. Make the investment and choose items that are moisture-wicking and pack light. The weather may cool unexpectedly or you might want to participate in treks because even in tropical destinations, temperatures can drop at higher elevations. IF YOU'RE TRAVELING FROM HOT TO COLD CLIMATES On the contrary, if you start your trip in the heat and then go to the cold, it might be more expensive to buy quality winter gear on the road so, again, invest in two solid pieces of outerwear that pack light such as a rain jacket and wool or fleece layer.

If you are traveling for longer than a month it may be cumbersome to carry heavy, unused clothing. Research the budget clothing options in your destinations when starting the cold part of your trip so you can stock up on wallet-friendly cold weather threads. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Purchasing clothing along the way can act as a souvenir. In Peru, for example, you can pick up beautiful, inexpensive, warm alpaca layers that you can wear at home during the winter. IF YOU'RE TRAVELING TO DIFFERENT CLIMATES ON ONE TRIP If your trip has you going back and forth between seasons, plan clothing that mixes and matches in light, quality fabrics such as merino wool and synthetics that you can layer. It may also be a good idea to invest in gear with specialty materials that provide insulation in light fabrics. There are always options around a little weather imbalance without weighing down your bag. You just have to be creative! TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Create two mini capsule wardrobes for each climate. One capsule wardrobe will be for the cold and the other will be for the summer. This system also helps locating your clothing an easier task. Pack your 6 piece cold weather set in one packing cube (not including your two outerwear pieces) and place warm weather clothing in another. Outerwear can go in a third cube. Not only does this help you organize, but it prevents overpacking. Refer to the last chapter to learn more about the Minimalist Packing List.

CHAPTER 5: TRAVEL ACCESSORIES AND ADDITIONAL GEAR Once you ve chosen your travel clothing, it s time to coordinate your shoes, underwear, and other accessories.

TRAVEL SHOES Choosing the right travel shoes is the most difficult aspect of packing for many women. You can t just pick up any old pair of shoes. They have to pass rigorous tests to determine if they're truly worthy of acting as crucial components of a trip. There are six factors to consider when choosing travel shoes: Support, Comfort, Weight, Durability, Functionality, and Style. SUPPORT: Do the shoes offer you the support you need? Each individual requires a certain level of support, especially if suffering from back problems or other health issues. First and foremost, determine if the shoes will work for your health and well-being. COMFORT: Will you be comfortable walking in these shoes for hours at a time? Consider when you have walked for long hours, whether to work, at amusement parks, or long shopping days. Think about your levels of comfort or discomfort that day and pay attention to how you feel when wearing different types of shoes to determine what types of shoes work best for you. WEIGHT: Are they heavy or will they pack light? If your goal is to pack light, then carrying heavy or bulky shoes won t help you. Look for compact shoes that pack easily and plan to wear the heaviest pair on the plane or while in transit. If your heaviest pair of shoes is a set of hiking

boots, ask yourself if you can see yourself wearing them while transiting through specific destinations. DURABILITY: Can they handle the wear and tear from constant use while traveling? Like clothing, shoes should be in great condition before a trip. Not only do you want to make a good impression, but you don t want your shoes failing apart after a few wears. Please note that you should always break your shoes in before a trip. FUNCTIONALITY: Will you be able to use them for your planned activities? Consider all the activities you would like to do when you travel. Determine what shoes work best in those scenarios and can be worn in the most settings. STYLE: Do they match with your planned travel outfits? One of the biggest mistakes that many travelers make is that they don t take their clothing options into consideration when they pick their shoes. Make sure your shoes go well with your planned outfits for specific destinations. It might be a pain to re-think a few clothing or shoe choices, but it s best that you realize any issues before a trip--not during. It is worth investing in quality shoes for travel. If your feet are sore and blistered, you won t be able to participate in all the activities you d like. It s not worth cutting corners on something as important as good quality shoes for your feet. You ll waste more money if you don t enjoy your trip. Depending on your activities, two pairs of shoes are the ideal minimum and three pairs is the magic number. Even if you pack ultra-light, there s always room for two. Within those three pairs of travel shoes should be balance of comfort, function, and style.

COMFORT describes the shoes you plan to wear the majority of your trip and that you will be wearing to do most of your sightseeing. They are essentially your walking shoes, so comfort is priority. Your comfort shoes should match the majority of your clothing. This can mean flip flops, flats, sandals, trainers, slip-ons, or boots, depending on your destination and level of comfort. Try on a variety of styles and colors and stick to shoes that you will enjoy wearing and that match with most your chosen travel clothing. FUNCTION refers to the pair you ll be wearing for specific activities such as trekking, sports, or even dancing. For many, this means trainers, proper travel shoes, or boots. These are usually the bulkiest pair, so leave room in your bag even if you plan to wear them in transit. You might change your mind once you re on the road. Try to limit your weight by choosing a lightweight, functional shoe or hybrid style that can be worn in various settings. STYLE is the pair that you can wear on the days you need a little extra pizzazz pretty sandals, flats, or cute ankle boots. Always pack a pair of shoes you would feel comfortable wearing on a nice evening out. If your trip is low key and no dressing up is required, your third pair of shoes should be relevant to your trip such as flip flops if you re headed to the beach or are planning to stay in hostels. Also, be SURE to break in any travel shoes before you leave. Wear them around town a few times and take them out for a hike or two if that's what you're into. The last thing you want is your comfortable shoes to give you blisters

If all fails, you can find shoes anywhere in the world if you realize you didn't make the best choices. Remember, you can have the most basic jeans and tee combination, but the right shoes will turn your look from simple to sophisticated with minimal effort. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Purchase gel inserts for your shoes to provide added comfort. Don t leave home without them! A NOTE ON HIGH HEELS Whether or not to pack high heels completely depends on the type of trip you have planned. If you re traveling for business or to a formal event, by all means pack one pair of heels in a neutral color that can go mix and match with all your outfits. Nude heels look classic and can go with anything while also elongating your legs. For vacations to Europe or major cities, avoid stilettos and consider taking wedges for comfort and ease of walking on cobblestone streets or uneven pavement. For resort or beach getaways, skip the heels and pack strappy sandals instead. Likewise, for cities choose a set of statement-making flats or low-heeled boots in the cold. Heels are a big no-no on a long-term voyage such as a backpacking or RTW trip. Instead, pack a nice pair of dressy sandals or flats that provide both comfort and style.

BRAS: 2-3 Be sure to pack two to three bras in neutral colors like nude or black so you can rotate them while you travel and not over-wear one. The best bras for travel are the ones that are easy to mix and match with your travel clothing. Convertible straps are always a plus. If you re going on a long trip, make one of those bras a sports bra to strap you down on bumpy bus rides and overland trucks. It seems to be a general consensus that three is the magic number when it comes to bras. However, every girl is unique, so you will need to adjust according to your personal needs. Basic Bra: A t-shirt bra is seamless, making it versatile with all your travel clothing options. A nude color works well under any color, even black tops. Convertible Bra: A convertible bra conveniently offers you the ability to adjust your straps for any clothing item. Sports Bra: A sports bra is great for trekking and working out, but it can also spare some pain on bad roads, especially if participating in overland truck tours in Africa. If you like to go braless, choose tops with built in shelf bras, especially when traveling in more modest countries or villages. Please note: if you have a large bust or uncommon bra size, it can be difficult to find your size when you travel, especially in places such as Asia where women are generally petite. Be prepared with durable bras! TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: A bikini top makes a great back-up bra option and can be worn in place of bras when by the beach.

UNDERWEAR: 5-10 Women s underwear, unlike men s, is small and compact. Ten pairs of women s underwear take up as much space as three sets of men s boxer briefs. If you are a minimalist that plans to wash your clothes every other day, pack five. If you want to pack light but want to have a comfortable quantity of underwear, pack ten. Underwear is something you want to dry quickly, especially if you re packing less. You don t have to pay top dollar on expensive travel brands to get moisture wicking properties; fitness brands work just as well! Microfiber and synthetic blends dry quickest. TRAVEL FASHION TIP: You can save money on great travel underwear at discount retailers by looking for fitness quality or microfiber fabric blends. Choose pairs with fabrics like microfiber cotton blends that are breathable and dry quickly for easy hand washing. On shorter trips, you don t want to be bogged down with laundry duty, and on longer trips, you want to have enough to last you at least five days without needing to wash, in case you find yourself participating in activities that don t allow time for adequate washing and drying of your intimates. Sure, you can pack only three if you are diligent about washing them daily, but women s underwear hardly takes up space, so why not be prepared? Just like bras, give yourself a few styles and colors to choose from that match your travel wardrobe. Choose neutral colors like nude or skin tones that will match under everything and alternate between styles (thongs, bikini, boy shorts, etc.) to give you options for all your clothing. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: Give them a test before you leave on your trip to see how quickly they dry. Anything that dries overnight is a good candidate.

1-3 SOCKS Like underwear, the best options for socks are fitness brands with moisture wicking properties. This means they ll dry quickly and also keep your feet less sweaty, too. Because they re small like underwear and can be washed easily, you don t need to pack that much. However, the quantity you choose will depend on your planned activities and the shoes you select to take. If you know in advance you plan a 4-day hiking trip to Machu Picchu, pack 4 pairs of socks enough for each day of the trek. Even if you don t travel with shoes that require socks, you might like to pack one pair to wear on flights or when you sleep. 1-SLEEP SET Choose two items that you can use to sleep in but that can also be worn for other activities as well. Don t pack your flannel PJ set from home! Ideally, the clothing you choose should be quick dry, so hopefully you can wash and wear the same day! Maybe pack a pair of running or yoga shorts and a fitness-style tank top. Not only will they have quick dry properties, but you can also wear them to work out. Alternatively, depending on the weather, you can replace the shorts with leggings or wear them interchangeably throughout the trip with the pair included in the Bottoms section. TRAVEL STYLIST TIP: You can maximize your wardrobe by ensuring that these two pieces can serve various purposes. Running shorts can also be worn at the beach for extra coverage or to lounge around in your room.

BATHING SUITS: 1-2 Bathing suits are a travel must have, no matter where you go. You should always pack a bathing suit whether you're going on a beach vacation, ski holiday, or round the world trip. It's a small item that is multi-functional and doesn't take up much space or weight. One or two sets of swimsuits are a good quantity to offer variety in style and practicality between wears. Even if you don t hit the beach, a bathing suit can be worn in a hot tub, spa, or it can easily double up as a halter bra and emergency underwear. For beach holidays, choose a reversible bathing suit to maximize your options without taking up extra space. ACCESSORIES For a minimalist traveler, the extra touches you add to your outfit make all the difference in the world. Pack select accessories to turn a basic outfit into a photo opportunity. A few basics that should be in everyone s list (even if you only travel with one bag) are a scarf and earrings. They are closest to your face, where the most attention is drawn, so they can add instant style, color, and flair with little effort. You only need a few key items to add a bit of spark to your wardrobe. These five basic travel accessories can transform your outfit from boring to fun without taking up too much space in your bag. BELT - A simple fabric or woven leather belt can instantly polish up your look. Stick to a neutral color like black or tan for a classic look, or choose an embellished style for a bohemian look. If your wardrobe is a neutral palette, consider a pop of color to add personality.

EARRINGS - If your minimalist packing style only allows one piece of jewelry, make it a dangly set of earrings to dress up any look. Easy to wear, they don't take up space or weight yet, add a touch of femininity. Alternatively, carry one complete set of jewelry- one pair of earrings, necklace, bracelet, and ring - that s all you need to dress up your travel style. Wear them all at once for a dressier look or choose one or two items when you want to be low key. PURSE - If there is one accessory that distinguishes a traveler from a local, it s in the bag. A handbag is one of the most forgotten items in a woman s packing list, but it s also a practical item that can completely change the look of your outfit. A handbag should be considered a travel essential. It is the one unique item that we use every single day in our regular lives but we forget to pack on a trip. How many women walk around with a backpack in their home town instead of a purse? Many women skip out on packing a purse concerned that it might get stolen. Use caution; wear it across your chest and avoid wearing your handbag next to the road. A crossbody bag is an excellent choice for travel. HAT - Wearing a hat not only adds style to an outfit but it also serves a very functional purpose: in the heat it protects you from the sun and in the cold it provides added warmth. It also makes getting ready a breeze when you don t have time to do your hair or are battling humidity and frizz. Say goodbye to bad hair days and hello to style with a chic summer fedora or a knit slouchy beanie in the cold! Make sure your hat goes with your travel clothing, but have fun with it accessories make the perfect color accents to an outfit. Don t forget your sunglasses!

SCARF - A scarf is by far the most popular travel accessory for women! Many travelers agree that a scarf can drastically improve the look of any travel outfit creating a more sophisticated and polished appearance. Pack one or two in varying colors and styles to add dash of brilliance to your look. Choose a warm knit circle scarf in the cold and a lightweight silk or cotton blend option in the heat. ALSO: A fashionable and reliable watch is a must-have when we re on the go, especially for frequent flyers or travelers that like to stay close to home when they're on the road. Dual time zone watches are the perfect option for travelers that like to rack up the miles!
