2 TIPS ON GETTING STARTED! WHERE TO START Start with all your ideas, however crazy! The theme for this competition is Unchartered Territories so this could take you anywhere from outer space to inside a volcano or plummeting into the ocean depths or even exploring deep inside you! Think outside your everyday life and have fun with it! Could your materials be recycled products? Or biodegradable? Or perhaps the garment represents an environmental message? Wearable Art is often quite structural, big bold shapes are popular but not essential. Look for inspiration in nature, art, fashion or just materials you see might spark an idea. Do some sketches, stay open to change, your design will evolve, so go with it. Start thinking about materials and how you could possibly create your concept/design. When you have an idea or a couple of ideas start thinking how you might create the structure and wearability. Can your model wear this garment comfortably? Are they able to take it on and off fairly easy? You may also like to start thinking about who will model your garment if not yourself. Their size and shape! Judges will be looking for the overall look and impact, colour, texture, wearability, materials used, effort, course of action and construction. MATERIALS Really open your mind to unexpected possibilities. Look at everything with new eyes. An umbrella sticking out of the bin..could that become a skirt? You might use a base garment and add onto this, build a structural frame to be covered and decorated, or just make it in one piece. Don t get limited by thinking of regular sewing or fashion materials. This garment need only be worn a few times, and does not need to be washed, so this frees you up to use other things. Industrial off cuts or waste materials are a great source, 2nd hand garments from opp shops or maybe you know someone who runs a business such as a café that throw out 100 s of milk bottles or plastic forks you could wash and use? To hold a skirt out you could use boning from sewing shops or the hard packing tape strips from boxes, gutter guard, plastic tubing and even the old garden hose. CONSTRUCTION & PROBLEM SOLVING Sew, glue, staple, hot glue gun, wrap, melt/fuse, cable ties, wire..it is important to build a strong durable base while keeping a light enough weight for a model to wear and walk in it plus of course so it can be taken on and off. What needs doing first? Start working with your material and shaping it to your planned garment. As you add something, check the weight, can you still get it on and off. As you are creating the garment keep trying it on as you go. That way you can fix any out of balance issues or other problems that may occur. Most important tip have fun and allow yourself to be inspired and get creative!!

3 Our aim as the Cairns Show, the largest Regional Show outside of Ekka, is not only to provide fun and entertainment for the people of Cairns but also to support the local industries. In particular our passion is for supporting the youth and emerging talent of Cairns. ABOUT FASHION AT CAIRNS SHOW The Cairns Show Wearable Arts competition is designed to showcase the upcoming imagination of our future designers in a designated fashion hub at the showgrounds. The winner of this competition announced during the Show will secure a place to represent Cairns at the state finals which is held at Ekka. ABOUT FASHION AT EKKA Attracting amateur dress makers and aspiring designers, the competition provides the perfect opportunity for enthusiasts to display their latest creations in front of an audience of over 400,000 people. With categories such as Senior School, Adult Outfit, Creative Outfit, Formal Wear, Wearable Art, Casual Active Wear, Showtime and Costume Party the catwalk is the liveliest place at the Ekka. Entrants will receive a pass and final timing details of the parade via post before the event. SPECIAL REGULATIONS 1. Open to all individuals 15 years and over. The age of competitors will be calculated from August in the year of the competition 2. Entrants can be amateur dressmakers, fashion designers and/or artists. No professionals can enter. 3. The Entry Form together with coloured photographs of both the front and back of the completed outfit must be forwarded to the Cairns Show Office by 29th June Outfits must be delivered to the Cairns Show Office on Monday 17th July by 4pm if possible please secure outfit on a suitable sized coat hanger. 5. Each entry must be a full outfit. 6. Fashion Parade will be held in the Wearables Arts Marquee at the showground on Thursday 20th July at 5pm. 7. You may either model the outfit yourself or you may bring someone to model the outfit for you. Please indicate on entry form.

4 8. This competition is run under the rules and regulations of the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies (QCAS). A copy of these rules can be obtained from 9. The 1st and 2nd place winners will be eligible to attend the QCAS finals which will be held at the EKKA. 10. First place entrant only will win a flight to Brisbane and accommodation to compete in the finals 11. The class is open so entrants can be as creative as they wish, the outfit does not need to be specially designed for the class, and it can be work created previously. 12. An outfit that has been entered in previous years cannot be entered again. 13. Entrants who have previously won are welcome to continue entering with new designs. WEARABLE ART JUDGING CRITERIA Overall finishing to garment 10 Suitability of fabric/materials used for the class entered. 10 Artistic Design 30 Visual Impact of the garment for the desired artistic effect 50 TOTAL POINTS 100 HOW TO ENTER 1. Fully complete the Official Entry Form (please use a separate form for each outfit) 2. Entries will not be accepted over the phone or after the closing date 3. Dispatch or deliver completed Entry Forms to Cairns Show Office PO Box 811 Bungalow QLD 4870 Entry Fee: Nil Prizes: 1st $150 plus 1 x return flight to Brisbane, two nights' accommodation, and entry to compete in the finals to be held at Ekka (Brisbane Royal Show). 2nd $75 3rd $50 Wearable Art Class Wearable Art - Be as Creative as you can be! Minimum entry age is 15 years Design ideas are only limited to your imagination, but you must explain your ideas on the entry form. This is also used so that the announcers can accurately describe your creation. Design can represent anything, but only one outfit per design idea ( i.e. Not 2 outfits same idea, different lengths) Purchased base garments can be used and embellished to create the required effect Any material/object or construction method can be used to create the required design. You do not have to be a sewer to enter this class just highly creative.
