Art Ibsen Adorned Part II Join us for the official unveiling of Ibsen Adorned Part II, featuring the jewelry and photomontages of international award-winning jewelry designer - goldsmith Liz Bucheit of Crown Trout Jewelers, Lanesboro, MN. Building on her previous exhibition of jewelry hosted by the during Ibsen Fest 2013, Liz was awarded a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board in the area of Folk and Traditional Arts to complete her collection of pieces inspired by Ibsen s complex characters. Influenced by her Norwegian ancestry and trained in traditional Norwegian silversmithing, Liz will give a presentation describing her tradition in transition creative process accompanied by a fashion show and photo exhibit of her finished pieces on Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 pm. Liz is best known for her award-winning Scandinavian inspired bridal crown and wedding tiaras. To Be a Poet Is to See The Commonweal is proud to present this three-dimensional exhibit exploring the universal themes and continued relevance of Ibsen s works. Through the generosity of the Norwegian government, this exhibit has been permanently gifted to the and will be on display throughout the run of.

2 Photography Arctic Norway The Gallery at Beste Byen (formerly Lanesboro Local) 201 Parkway Ave. N. The land above the Arctic Circle is known for midnight sun and northern lights, the Sámi people and the polar bears of the Svalbard Islands. Michelle Whitehill, Coordinator of Tours at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, and local residents and Norwegian enthusiasts David and Lynn Susag have travelled the northernmost region of Scandinavia and share some of the photographs documenting their travels. The exhibit will be on display throughout the weekend. History & Culture The Sámi: The Indigenous People of Scandinavia It is not often we have the opportunity to explore the culture of the Sámi people, but as s quest sends him through the northernmost mountains of Norway we are excited to present a display of artifacts on loan from the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum as well as items from the personal collections of patrons. Jewelry, gakti (costumes) and other pieces will be on display throughout the weekend. Religion in the Life of Early Immigrants Lanesboro Historical Museum 105 Parkway Ave. S. The Lanesboro Historical Museum offers a display of religious elements: Norwegian Bibles, confirmation dresses, and other items highlighting the importance of faith in the lives of early residents in the region. 3 Saturday, April 12 10:00 am FREE Start your day with Scandinavian pastries and coffee at the Events Hall. Lecture The Cult of Personality and the Threats to Authentic Religious Identity 10:30 am Professor J.P. Rosensweig, founder of The Philosophy Institute: Bringing Ideas to Life. What are the dynamics of religious fanaticism? How are these phenomena related to the formation of an authentic religious identity? Prof. Rosensweig will explore some of the key philosophical issues in Ibsen's, namely, what leads people to follow seemingly extreme religious leaders, often at the cost of developing their own individual religious identity? Kaffepause 11:00 am to 4:00 pm $$$ A social tradition in Norway, kaffepause means coffee break. The Events Hall will be set up all day offering coffee and selling old-fashioned, hand-crafted Scandinavian treats from A Little Decadence. Enjoy a coffee break while you view the Sámi cultural and other art exhibits. Culture Kubb: The Viking Chess! 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Sylvan Park Don t miss the 2 nd Annual Ibsen Festival Kubb Tournament at Sylvan Park! Otherwise known as Viking Chess, this yard game played with wooden blocks and sticks is thought to have originated with the Vikings and was enjoyed throughout the Nordic countries. In addition to the tournament, there will be workshops and demonstrations throughout the day. Art Artist Demonstration: Julia Crozier 1:00 to 4:00 pm Lanesboro Arts Center Winona artist Julia Crozier will demonstrate painting techniques in various media, including landscape and abstract. Her main subject matter through the years has been landscapes, especially those in which the grandeur of creation can be found in the sheer openness of the land. More recently, Julia s experimentation with various media and larger formats has allowed her to stretch out as an artist both in size and expression, leading to the creation of several large abstract paintings. She followed this line of work after opening the Blue Heron Gallery and Studio in Winona, MN. The studio gave her the opportunity to work in large formats and to create several works synchronously.

4 Lecture s Homelessness Professor Mark Sandberg, President of the Ibsen Society of America 1:00 pm Ibsen's play, the first he published after his departure from Norway in 1864, bears many of the typical marks of exile literature: the double voicing, the ambivalence about one's home culture, and the reversal of commonly held traditional values in light of new experiences abroad. Ibsen's play expressed these perspectives through consistent attention to architectural metaphors of house and home and of profane and sacred building activities. What did "home" mean for Ibsen once he had left it behind? One thing is certain: he did not suffer from nostalgia. Join us as Professor Mark Sandberg of the University of California, Berkeley, presents material from his forthcoming book Ibsen s Houses. Lecture Who Are the Sámi? John Xavier, Sámi Siida of North America (SSNA) 3:00 pm The Sámi Siida of North America (SSNA) is the major representative organization of the Sámi culture on the North American continent, whose purpose it is to facilitate awareness and celebration of Sámi heritage and culture. Current SSNA chair John Edward Xavier and board member Jennifer Harkonen will share more about the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. Traditional Sámi jewelry incorporated elements of their northern landscape softened reindeer leather and sculpted antler. In this class you ll explore the traditional jewelry techniques of triple braiding coiled pewter wire and sewing the finished braid to a softened reindeer hide strip. A reindeer antler button finishes off the bracelet. All tools and materials are provided PLUS a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Bret of the Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe.
