1 KENT Ashford 2/692 (C.29.P001) TQ TN23 3HU BRISLEY FARM (CHARTFIELDS), CHILMINGTON GREEN, ASHFORD, KENT An Archaeological Evaluation of Phases 6 and 7 at Brisley Farm (Chartfields), Chilmington Green, Ashford Stevenson, J Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2003, 24pp, figs, tabs,refs Archaeological evaluation of Phases Six and Seven at Brisley Farm (Chartfields), consisted of 29 trenches, 23 revealed archaeological remains. These remains seem to have been prehistoric in origin (some dated to the Late Bronze Age in Phase Seven) mostly being gullies, but pits, post holes and stake holes were also present. These remains may have been associated with a large prehistoric settlement excavated during Phases Three and Four of the development. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: LBA, PR 2/693 (C.29.M065) TR TN25 7HY LAND AT BILHAM FARM, PARK FARM EAST, ASHFORD An Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Bilham Farm, Park Farm East, Ashford, Kent Stevenson, J Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2003, 29pp, figs, tabs, refs A total of 39 trenches were excavated, 34 of which produced archaeological remains. These were mostly pits, post hole and gullies, several remains were thought to date from the Late Iron Age-Early Romano-British period. Several features of an earlier prehistoric date were also identified and also on possible Saxo-Norman gully. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: EM, IA, MD, PR, RO 2/694 (C.29.M024) TR TN23 3PJ MILLBANK RECEPTION CENTRE, MILLBANK PLACE, ASHFORD Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Millbank Reception Centre, Millbank Place, Ashford, Kent Gollop, A Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2003, 25pp, figs, tabs, refs Seven trenches were cut, significant archaeological remains were identified in two of the trenches. The principal discovery was a series of grave-like features, tentatively dated to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman period. Other features dating to the Late Iron Age/Roman period were limited the south-eastern corner of the site and consisted of a single pit, a ditch and a gully. The presence of relatively frequent charcoal and charred cereal grains within these features suggested domestic or settlement activity. 2 2/695 (C.29.M058) TQ TN23 5LA SINGLTON SCHOOL, ASHFORD An Archaeological Evaluation at the Site of the Proposed Ashford Singleton Church of England (Aided)/Methodist Primary School, Singleton, Ashford, Kent Griffin, N Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2003, 18pp, figs, tabs, refs An evaluation consisting of 32 trenches was undertaken at the proposed site of a new school and associated infrastructure. A number of medieval features (including ditches, gullies and possible post holes) were located at the northern side of the site. Such evidence was considered to indicate the presence of a farmstead with occupation spanning the mid 12th to 14th centuries based on the ceramic evidence. No prehistoric pottery was found, although four flint waste flakes (two retouched) were located. Further features containing 20th century material were found in the eastern part of the site. MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS CHURCH, KINGSNORTH (I) An Archaeological Evaluation in the Northern Churchyard at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Kingsnorth, Nr. Ashford, Kent Linklater, A Canterbury : Canterbury Archaeological Trust, 2003, 16pp, colour pls, figs Evidence of burial within this portion of the churchyard, after the removal of the chapel, was revealed in Trench A. In this, one grave had been cut through the backfill deposits of the east walls robber trench, whilst another had cut through a series of deposits used to level the surrounding ground surface. These levelling deposits contained late nineteenth century pottery, suggesting that unmarked burials continued to be placed in this portion of the churchyard at last until the close of the nineteenth century. A Roman rampart survived to a higher level than anticipated. The south wall of the narrower medieval nave was found. This ploughsoil deposit appeared to have accumulated and been worked until the construction of the garden walls to the rear of 53/54 St. Dunstons Street and the building of the houses in Orchard Street in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These included archaeological deposits and features associated with St. Gregory's Priory, which are of regional and potential national importance. The upper most significant archaeology, here defined as the early post-medieval soil horizons attributed to post-dissolution levelling and landscaping, was seen to survive at variable depths across the site. Feature one falls roughly where the projected line of the crop mark ditch would occur. Dating evidence based on the finds of both features could be of prehistoric date. The evaluation identified no archaeological deposits during the sampling. It is possible that the large ditch encountered in trench four and five was also associated with the Friary, perhaps part of a peripheral boundary. The silting of this ditch and similar smaller ditches encountered took place early in the post-medieval period. At the same time the establishment of other features such as the chalk metalled paths indicated continued occupation of the site in the context of the decline and robbing of the infrastructure of the Friary. No archaeological features were observed and the only artefact of archaeological significance was a single sherd of Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pottery. Significant archaeological remains are absent from much of the site. A light scatter of prehistoric struck flints, mostly recovered from the topsoil deposits, form part of a much more extensive spread of lithic material which occurs across the region. The bulk of the flints are likely to be of Neolithic-Bronze Age date, with some Palaeolithic material present. Two clusters of archaeological features were located during the evaluation. The first cluster consisted of a pit or gully of prehistoric date, plus a number of linear gullies, occasional post holes, the remains of a robbed out timber building of Roman date, plus several undated features. The second cluster consisted of a number of undated stake holes, pits and linear gullies, possibly stock pens. Post-mediaeval features of note included a land drain lined with cattle horn cores, a ceramic land drain of late 18th or early 19th century date and two phases of 19th century brick built cellars. Two small post-medieval pits and ditches were revealed in the trenches, but no archaeological remains or artefacts associated with the Roman building were observed. The only feature located was a World War II concrete constructed air raid shelter that consisted of c.50m of corridors, three entrances and two small side rooms. An initial assessment of the recovered pottery indicated that the archaeological remains which survived generally date from between A.D through to A.D. 1300/25. The earliest archaeological evidence, consisting of slight terraces, a possible pond/water feature and the remains of a section of earlier ragstone boundary walling, appear to represent the remains of formal gardens associated with the building of the present house (later the farmhouse) in the seventeenth century. Evidence of mid 17th to 18th century activity, possible 19th century Brickearth extraction, presumably for brick making, 20th century rubbish pits and a trench were found. No evidence of activity predating the post-medieval was located. The trenches revealed a sparse scatter of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age features across much of the site. These features included a small number of pits, a few gullies and some shallow linear features of uncertain interpretation. These features were found to contain a number of struck flints, a very small amount of coarse-tempered pottery and a quantity of marine shell. Though a clear pattern of settlement was not established, the features observed were sufficient to indicate the likelihood of such settlement in the vicinity. A single narrow gully had been truncated by modern service trenches. A small fragment of pottery and fragments of worked flint within the gulley suggest an Early Bronze Age date. Crop marks in the fields around the site indicate activity at this date. A lack of residual material was probably caused in part by the construction of the military bungalows on the site in the 1950's. It is possible that the absence of features reflects a real absence of archaeological activity on the site. Evidence of medieval activity was found. Undated pits and a gully were also located. In trench four, there was a large pit, probably a soil quarry, the backfill of which contained medieval roof tile and an iron bucket handle. In trench 12 there was a series of nine unlined, small, rubbish pits and one post hole. Pottery from these pits dates from , other finds from these contexts included metallic slag.
