COLOURED GEMSTONES, PEARLS, JADE AND AMBER Prospective buyers of coloured gemstones should be aware that some stones might have been treated to enhance their colour or clarity. Sapphires and rubies are commonly heat-treated and emeralds are commonly oiled. In the case of heat treatment, this is permanent but can affect the durability of the stones. In the case of oiling, this may need to be redone after a period of years. The international jewellery trade has generally accepted these methods. It is not possible for Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood to obtain gemmological reports on stones offered for sale and so prospective buyers should assume all gemstones may have been enhanced by some method. Descriptions given the footnote'untested' mean the descriptions are an indication of our opinion only and not necessarily a matter of fact and prospective buyers must satisfy themselves as to the nature of the gems so described.

A late 18th century 18ct gold pair cased pocket watch, the circular white enamel dial 36mm diameter with Roman and Arabic numerals and blued steel poker hands, the movement with fusee and cylinder escapement, pierced cock with rose diamond end stone and backplate signed Justin Vulliamy, with date code CCO, in a plain 18ct gold case and monogramed and engraved outer case, both with hallmarks for London 1778, 47mm outer case diameter, 101gms gross weight. * William Gardner. A gentleman s 18ct gold keywound lever openface pocket watch, the circular white enamel dial, 45mm diameter with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, the movement with signed backplate numbered 1463, in an 18ct gold case with presentation initials dated 1866, 92gms gross weight. * Jno. Rentnow, London, a tortoiseshell pair-cased pocket watch the chain fusee movement having a verge escapement with a pierced and engraved backcock, with Tompion regulation and engraved Jno. Rentnow, London, No. 1341, for John Wontner, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and gold hands, the gold-plated case stamped to the inside with the case maker s initials I.W., with a gold-plated and tortoiseshell outer pair-case inset with pinwork, diameter 5.5cm. * Biography John Wontner was a maker of some repute working in the Minories, London, becoming a Freeman of the Clock Makers Company in 1770 and a Liveryman in He often signed his clocks and watches with the reverse of his name, as in this case. Other examples are displayed in the Glasgow Art Gallery and in the Courtney Ilbert Collection of clocks & watches which was acquired by the British Museum in His son, also John, was apprenticed to him in 1798 and they were in partnership from John Snr died in 1807 at which point his son became a Freeman. 64
