2 the big diva...from Main Bourbon St. - Set behind a high brick wall, this large, raised Creole cottage is furnished with antiques and an art collection including works by Peter Max and a Salvador Dali serigraph. A chair and mink stole used by Barbara Streisand during her 1993 New Year's concert at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas is on display in the parlour. The home is the residence of Tip Varnadore and Gary Delaune Bourbon St. - The Victorian cottage of Peter Patout is furnished completely in antiques, including four-poster beds, Empire, Victorian and early Louisiana pieces, old mirrors and portraits. An 1824 garconniere stands in the picturesque rear courtyard. 831 Gov. Nichols St. - Just steps off Bourbon Street and entered through an iron gate in a stuccoed wall is the unusual home of John and Adele Baus. The residence is comprised of a compound of 1800s buildings set far back from the street in a maze of gardens, including two hidden courtyards. For more information about the Treasures of Bourbon Street house tour, call King Tut Exhibit Prepares for Philadelphia Drawing more than 2 million visitors from throughout the United States, the renowned Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition is preparing for its final stop on the current U.S. tour. The exhibition will be at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, its only northeast destination, from Feb. 3, Sept. 30, 2007, giving Americans one more chance to experience the world that remains of Egyptian royal life 3,000 years ago, before the exhibit heads to London. Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs builds on the legacy of the last King Tut exhibit to visit the United States, VISCERA COFFIN: Tutankhamun possessed four miniature coffins fashioned of gold and inlaid with colored glass and semi-precious stones, and each stood in a separate compartment in an alabaster chest. The band of inscription running down the front names Imseti, one of the sons of Horus, and the goddess Isis, who would protect the deceased and the particular mummified organ within, in this case the liver. The cartouche encircling the king s name on the interior was reworked and originally had the name of one of Tutankhamun s relatives. which drew record crowds more than 26 years ago. Now this larger and even more intriguing exhibition, featuring approximately 130 artifacts from the tombs of King Tut and his contemporaries, is breaking records of its own. Five months prior to opening in the city of brotherly love, approximately 300,000 tickets have been reserved, and visitors from as far away as California, Oregon and Montana are represented, which speaks to the hold the exhibition has had over the country since it began its fourcity tour in June Visitors to Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs progress through multiple galleries filled with more than 130 artifacts from the tombs of King Tut, several of his relatives and 18th Dynasty (1555 B.C. to 1305 B.C.) contemporaries. On display are 50 of Tutankhamun s burial objects including his royal diadem - the gold crown discovered encircling the head of his mummified body that ROYAL CANOPIC BUST: This calcite bust of the king depicts Tutankhamun wearing the nemes headdress. Red and black paint are used to highlight features of the face as well as the two protective vulture and cobra deities projecting from his brow. The recessed base below the shoulders indicates that the bust served as a stopper for one of the four cylindrical hollows of the canopic chest in which the mummified organs of the king were stored in separate coffinettes. STATUETTE UPPER EGYPT: This statuette of the king wearing the tall crown of Upper Egypt consists of wood covered in gesso and then gilded. It is among 35 ritual figures of the king and deities that were placed in sealed wooden shrines in the tomb. The color combination of the gold of the figure and the black of the base suggests both rebirth and regeneration. The crook he holds in his left hand and the flail he grasps in his right are symbols of his kingship. he likely wore as king - and one of the gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs. More than 70 objects from tombs of other 18th Dynasty royals as well as several non-royal individuals are exhibited. These stone, faience and wooden pieces from burials before Tut s reign give visitors a sense of what the lost burials of other royalty and commoners may have been like. All of the treasures in the exhibit are between 3,300 and 3,500 years old. A special section of the exhibition explores the mystery of Tutankhamun s death using the marvels of modern CT scanning technology. The scanning of Tut s mummy is part of a landmark, five-year Egyptian research and conservation project, partially funded by National Geographic, that will CT-scan the ancient mummies of Egypt. The portable CT scanner used was donated by Siemens AG and National Geographic. Tickets to the exhibition at The Franklin Institute will go on sale in November.
