It is common practice for coloured gemstones such as jade, emerald and sapphire to be treated to enhance their appearance. Jade may be bleached, polymer/resin filled and dyed, or subjected to a combination of these treatments. Emeralds may be treated with oils or resins to improve their colour and clarity, similarly sapphires and rubies are routinely heated for the same purpose. Staining, irradiation and coating treatments may also be used and some treatments are not permanent. Prospective buyers should assume that all coloured gemstones sold by Mallams may have been treated, unless stated to the contrary in the catalogue description.

A COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE AND LATER BROOCHES, comprising an oval shell cameo brooch, possibly carved to depict the profile of Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting, a crescent moon above her head and a quiver behind her shoulder, in ropetwist wirework decorated frame, together with a Victorian onyx and half pearl memorial panel brooch, with bead and ropetwist wirework decorated frame, glazed verso, a micromosaic panel brooch, a 9ct gold bar brooch, and an openwork brooch, first brooch length 4.5cm (5) (plus 24% BP*) Lot A VICTORIAN MEMORIAL LOCKET PENDANT ON CHAIN, the plain polished oval locket with interior glazed compartment and inscription, In Memory Of A. R. Chute, 90th Regt, 23rd Feby, 1858, suspended from a trace-link chain with clasp stamped 9, pendant length 4.3cm A. R. Chute is listed as a Lieutenant in the Records of the 90th Regiment (Perthshire Light Infantry), a Scottish light infantry regiment of the British Army known as the Perthshire Volunteers. Following the end if its involvement in the Crimean War, the regiment embarked for India in February 1857, to help suppress the Indian Rebellion. An extract from the Records of the regiment reports that it came under prolonged attack from the mutineers at Alum Bagh on 21st February, 1858; They kept up their fire during the night... Our loss, in all, amounted to five men killed, and thirty-five officers and men wounded.
