The learner can: 1.1 Describe the physical properties of gemstones commonly used in the manufacture of jewellery items. 1.2 Describe how other jewellery manufacturing processes have an impact upon how stones can be set. 1.3 Evaluate information on new and emerging technologies to inform own practice. 1.4 Critically compare how new and emerging technology may be applied in their working context. 1.5 Describe the impact that the cut of stones can have upon the type of setting used. 2 Understand how to set gemstones using advanced setting techniques. 2.1 Describe how to maintain tools by: production hardening tempering sharpening 2.2 Describe how to lay out different gemstone cuts. 2.3 Explain how the breakage of gemstones can be avoided. 2.4 Describe how holding devices should be used. 2.5 Compare and contrast the range of tools used within the workplace and their different uses. 2.6 Describe the use of carborundum stick and grinding tools. 4 Learning outcomes The learner will: Assessment criteria The learner can: 2.7 Describe how faults may be identified 2.8 Describe the action that should be taken to rectify common faults. 3 Be able to set gemstones using advanced setting techniques. 3.1 Produce gem settings in a range of styles including: pave setting with mixed stone sizes calibre and channel setting a range of claw settings illusion/invisible setting gypsy setting with assorted shapes of stones pave and thread settings with graduated stones set a variety of shapes of diamonds and semi precious stones 3.2 Produce gem settings in a range of materials. 3.3 Produce gem settings using a range of simple and complex tools. 4 Be able to assess the quality of the work. 5 Be able to evaluate own activity to improve future performance Assess the level of tables. Assess how precisely stones are set for level and height. Assess the cleanliness of the setting. Assess the security of the stone. Assess the relative success of the methods used to identify areas for improvement. Evaluate industry research and information to identify where new methods can be used. Develop conclusions as to how new methods can be improved. Make recommendations as to how new methods might effectively be implemented. 5 Additional information about the unit Unit purpose and aim(s) This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use different styles of setting to secure various cuts of gemstones including the use of advanced techniques. Learning Outcome 1 The physical properties of gemstones commonly used in the manufacture of jewellery items. How other jewellery manufacturing processes have an impact on how stones can be set.
