Shrimpton s Hill Biosecurity Procedures and Precautions Shrimpton s Hill is a closed beef-breeding herd. We haven t purchased any breeding or trading stock for over 10 years, with the exception of 2 North Island herd sires 6 years ago and recipients sourced by Animal Breeding Services at Te Awamutu in 2016 and 2017. The recipients have been grazed separately. Semen used has been collected from our own bulls with the addition of 3 Australian Hereford sires. For 20 years we have leased yearling bulls to Matt and Julie Ross at Duntroon, brought them home and wintered them before presenting them in our bull sale as 2 year olds. This has been a mutually beneficial arrangement with the Ross feeding up to 90 of our yearlings over the summer and returning them in fantastic condition. 3 sample groups of sale bulls. As expected all samples returned clear of M.Bovis. We are fully Nait compliant and all cattle treatments and products are sourced from Vetlife Pleasant Point. Cleland Transport has done all trucking between our properties. With the sale bulls in mind, we have asked them to coordinate the movement of all sold bulls from Shrimpton s Hill to within a 200km radius of us, to either their final destination or to link with another transport. We will cover the cost of the clean trucks and the 200km movement. Beyond the 200km radius, the responsibility of the movement is that of the purchaser. Shrimpton s Hill Herefords is pleased to present this catalogue of 175 two-yearold bulls for the 2018 sale. the advice of LIC s veterinary team, we have done penile swabs on 3 sample groups of sale bulls. As expected all samples returned clear of M.Bovis. LIC s District Manager in Tasmania, Andrew Savage brought a group of Australian breeders to visit us after the SIDE conference in Dunedin. They had all used our semen and were interested in our breeding journey. The Ross have done numerous M.Bovis tests, all returning clear. The first 71 lots in the sale were used at Ross, as yearlings in 2017. In the foreseeable future, sadly we can no longer lease any bulls. On the advice of LIC s veterinary team, we have done penile swabs on NO STUD TRANSFERS WILL BE GIVEN Health Protocol: TB Herd status C10 BVD All bulls have been blood tested BVD antigen negative and have been vaccinated. All bulls have received a 7-in-1 vaccination to cover Clostridial diseases and Leptospirosis. An annual booster is recommended. Map of Directions to Sale All cartage instructions are to directed to Cleland Transport Ph: 614 3850 or clelandtransport@farmside.co.nz. We ask that you please respect our mutual biosecurity when you enter our property by arriving with clean vehicles and footwear. We will provide a footbath on sale day. Shrimpton s Hill Herefords is pleased to present this catalogue of 175 R2 bulls for the 2018 sale. The last 12 months have been very unsettling, and in some cases a tragic year for our fellow cattle producers. As M. Bovis has spun it s web across New Zealand it s changed the rules, practices and habits of generations of cattle farmers. We believe that in the present climate, our mutual biosecurity is paramount. With this in mind, we have commissioned our local trusted carrier, Cleland Transport to be the sole carrier to transport our sale bulls. We have asked them to coordinate the movement of all sold bulls from Shrimpton s Hill to within a 200km radius of us, to either their final destination or to link with another transport. Shrimpton s Hill Herefords will cover the cost of the clean trucks and the 200km movement. Beyond the 200km radius, the responsibility of the movement is that of the purchaser. This year s sale team are all in the top 10% for Gestation Length in Australasia for Herefords and all of the catalogue are above breed average for calving ease. It has been a wonderful growthy season in our part of the country and the bulls reflect it. In fact, we have had to hold them back from getting too heavy. The 2018 catalogue is presented with confidence, that the bulls are the best genetic line up ever offered by Shrimpton s Hill. Our continued sponsorship of the Canterbury/North Otago Dairy Industry Awards is extremely satisfying. Congratulations to Daniel and Paula McAtamney for winning the Regional Share farmer title and our sponsorship. It s a privilege to rub shoulders with the young, visionary and driven contestants of this outstanding competition. We wish you well with your purchases and thank you for showing interest in our genetics. Contact: John & Liz McKerchar Shrimpton s Hill Herefords Ph 03 614 3759 shrimptons@farmside.co.nz www.shrimptonshillherefords.co.nz This catalogue has been compiled and produced by the vendor, and although every care has been taken to ensure accuracy, no responsibility is accepted for any error or ommission that might be contained therein All cartage instructions are to directed to Cleland Transport Ph: 614 3850 or clelandtransport@farmside.co.nz. We have made every possible endeavour to ensure our herd is closed and protected. On Our partnership and relationship with LIC grows stronger every year. We have six bulls at Newstead on duty, one currently being progeny tested and three more for next spring. All four new sires have been successfully used in our herd over yearlings. The EBVs are reported as differences in the percentage of unassisted calvings. Higher, more positive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with an EBV of +5.0% would be expected, on average, to produce 3% fewer difficult calvings from 2 year old heifers than a bull with an EBV of 1.0% (6% difference between the sires, then halved as they only contribute half the genetics). Gestation Length Gestation Length EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in the number of days from the date of conception to the calf birth date. Gestation Length EBVs are expressed in days and are calculated from the joining date and birth date records for calves conceived by either AI or Hand Mating. Shorter gestation length is generally associated with lighter birth weight, improved calving ease and improved re-breeding performance among dams. In addition, calves born with a shorter gestation length are often heavier at weaning due to more days of growth. Consequently, lower or more negative Gestation Length EBVs are considered to be more favourable. For example, a bull with a Gestation Length EBV of 2 days would be expected to produce calves that are born earlier, and more easily, than a bull with a Gestation Length EBV of +2 days. Birth Weight Birth Weight EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest genetic contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. Birth Weight EBVs are expressed in kilograms (kgs) and are calculated based on weights of calves taken at birth. Small, or moderate, Birth Weight EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +2 kg would be expected to produce lighter calves at birth than a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +6 kg, with a lower risk of a difficult birth. Please note, whilst low Birth Weight EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also generally associated with lower overall growth potential. Consequently, birth weight and growth need to be carefully balanced. Fortunately, animals can be found that have both moderate Birth Weight EBVs and above average EBVs for later growth. 200 Day Growth 200 Day Growth EBV's are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in live weights at 200 days of age due to their genetics for growth, 200 Day Growth EBV's are expressed in kilograms (kg) and are calculated from the weights of calves taken between 80 and 300 days of age. This EBV is a measure of an animal's early growth to weaning. It is an important trait for breeders naming off animals as vealers or weaners. Larger more positive, 200 Day Growth EBV's are generally more favourable. For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +30kg would be expected to pedigree heavier calves at 200 days of age (or weaning) compared to a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +10kg. 2017 HEREFORD GROUP BREEDPLAN EBV s AVERAGES GL BTW Calving Ease 200 Wt -0.2 +4.5 0.7 +32 27 HORTON ST POINT PHONE 03 614 7572 FAX 03 614 8015 65 ELIZABETH ST CAVE PHONE 03 614 3850 FAX 03 614 3849 Graphs showing Genetic Trend of Shrimpton's Hill Herefords vs the Hereford Breed average for Gestation Length, Birth weight and Calving Ease ROBERT CELL 027 293 1008 EMAIL clelandtransport@farmside.co.nz FOR PROMPT PERSONAL SERVICE FROM YOUR LOCAL TRANSPORT OPERATOR CALL: ROBERT AND ROBYN CLELAND 4 5
