Stallings Polled Herefords First of all we give all the glory and honor to God, because we believe all things are possible to those who believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ! Dear fellow breeders, friends, and neighbors, We feel blessed and proud to welcome you to the first annual On the Horizon sale. Offering quality Hereford cattle with performance and pedigree has been a dream on the horizon for Stallings Polled Herefords for some time. Greg is the fourth generation in this Spencer Creek Valley, having Herefords dating back to 1930. Greg has had the dream, the desire and the ambition to continue this Hereford cattle legacy from his youth. For the past 20 years our family has joined him in his goal to raise, promote and enjoy furthering the genetic possibilities of registered Hereford cattle. In those early years, we are thankful that we were welcomed by foundation Hereford breeders who generously shared their advice along with their friendship. As destiny would have it, our goals and ambition had become a mutual interest between our neighbors, George and Karen Sprague, when they purchased one-half interest in our bull, SPH Victor Bound 901J. Since then George and Karen have become part of the family as we have shared over a decade of memories that we will treasure and we look forward to many more. In the last 10 years our breeding program has accelerated with the advancement of artificial insemination, embryo transfer and investments in top genetics throughout the years from solid breeders like Split Butte, Colyer Herefords, Frank Rodgers and Vollstedt Farms. The promotion of our cattle has been done almost exclusively by our kids, Greg Jr. and Amelia. They have shown each year for the past twelve years in most of the open and junior Hereford shows in the Northwest including the Western Nationals in Reno and recently added the National Western Stock Show this last year. In 2007, they attended their first junior national show and this became one of their favorite shows to participate in each year. We are fortunate that our kids have been able to be involved with the Oregon Junior Hereford program. It is a wonderful opportunity for developing leadership skills and lifetime friends. Our goal for this sale is to offer Hereford cattle that will stand up to the highest standards, a standard that our customers will be able to count on. Fortunately, we have fellow breeders that share our same goal and who we are proud to include as our friends and special guests: George and Karen Sprague, Bar 1 Ranch; Tom and Denise Wiseman, Circle S West; Hack and Linda Norton, Hacklin Herefords; Phyllis Vollstedt and Linda Sims, Vollstedt Farms; and Rodney Smith, Sunshine Hereford Ranch. We feel privileged to have them come along side of us in support of our dream, On the Horizon. So, we invite you to examine the genetic backgrounds, the structural correctness and the EPD advantages of these cattle. See if you agree that this group of Herefords will compete in the showring or be an asset to your breeding program. Don t miss this opportunity to become involved in this growing Hereford breed. It s not only the quality of the animal but it s the qualities and values of the people involved that make this business a success. Sincerely, Stallings Polled Herefords Greg, Therese, Greg II and Amelia 85711 Pine Grove Rd. Eugene, OR 97405 541-485-3615

Bar One Ranch We are proud and delighted to participate in the first annual Stallings and Guests Production Sale. We think we have some interesting cattle to offer for sale, ranging from this year s heifer calves sired by About Time, Maui Jim and Ovation to spring yearling heifers bred to Maui Jim and Ovation. We became Hereford breeders relatively late in life. We were professors at the University of Oregon, but we became interested in purchasing rural property. The particular piece of land that caught our eye came with the stricture that we run a cattle herd if we were going to build a home on the site. Neither Karen nor I had any experience with cattle but we decided to embrace the adventure and have run the ranch for 15 years now. It has been quite a learning experience and a lot of fun too. We are deeply indebted to our friends, particularly the Stallings family Greg, Therese, Greg, Jr., and Amie Phyllis Vollstedt and Linda Sims and Kenny Tracy, who patiently taught us how to raise and care for cattle and guided us in our effort to improve the quality of our herd. Our university colleagues are a little mystified about what we re doing, but we have no second thoughts and thoroughly enjoy the life we ve chosen. The name we selected for our ranch, Bar1 Ranch, brings together my childhood love for Westerns, in which it seemed every ranch was named the Bar-something, and my career as a scientist. I had named one of the yeast genes I discovered (in 1980) BAR1 because of its role as a barrier to yeast pheromone. So, when we started our ranch, Bar1 seemed the perfect name. We look forward to seeing all of you at the sale on October 9. It will be our pleasure to show you the heifers we are offering. Circle S West Hereford Cattle 4525 North 1100 East Buhl, Idaho 208-543-8693 208-731-4714 Circle S West would like to thank and welcome you to the first Stallings Herefords On The Horizon Sale. We feel privileged to be included in this sale. It has been a real pleasure building a friendship and business partnership with Greg and Therese Stallings. We are reminded of their great family values especially when we are around their kids, Greg Jr. and Amy. In saying this, the foundation for this sale is instilled solidly and with integrity. Circle S West Ranch was formerly Eagle Canyon Ranch which ran a commercial cow-calf operation of mostly Red Angus. Bill and Suzanne Root bought the ranch in 1995 and gave the reins to Tom and Denise Wiseman to operate a fun, working ranch with one goal: to preserve and maintain wildlife and its habitat. The cattle numbers were minimized for quality rather than quantity as we decided to go into the Hereford seedstock business. Our most important goal is to bring good genetics together producing practical and functional cattle to help profitability in the commercial cattle industry. We stand to back up our product. It is simply a pleasure to have calves come along that a young Hereford junior can learn, have fun and achieve success with. We look forward to visiting with old and new friends at the Stallings Ranch and our best wishes to all for a good sale. Vollstedt Farms 451 N.W. Quarry Rd. Albany, OR 97321 541-926-5640 Cell 541-990-8038 vollstedtfarms@comcast.net Vollstedt Farms has been in existence since 1968. We have dedicated ourselves to the pursuit of excellence. The polled Herefords have been our passion. Our first success in the showring was in 1978-79 with VF Justabanner D 22H. Then in 1995, the National Champion Bull, VF Armor s Victor 327C. Even with the many winners, our primary focus has always been the cow herd. The top heifers have always stayed in the herd. Until now. In this sale, you have the opportunity to share in the heifers that would go into the herd. They will be feminine, they will be correct, they will be thick enough and they will all have excellent mothers. Study the extra thickness in the offspring of our new bull Voyager and his sire Rib Eye. If you want to walk in the ring with real natural muscle, they have it. We would like to thank the Stallings for asking us to participate in their first production sale. This will be a sale of great opportunity. The future of the Herefords looks as bright now as it has in many years. We don t know a better investment for the times than some good, solid Hereford females. Sunshine Hereford Ranch My parents started raising Herefords in the late 50s on 40 acres. The first registration was in 1956 of two Domino cows (Beau Domino, Domino 6). My father changed registered Hereford bulls every three years. He said it took him two to three years to find one to work with his program. Then he would keep two or three heifers out of the last bull for replacements to build on past traits from the previous bull. Past Foundation bulls Advancer, Domino, Victor, a Carnation bull from Carnation Dairy Farms Hereford Program, Spidel, Justabanner, Vindicator, Charm Norden. Past Foundation s Domino 6, WSF Dutchman, WSF Banner, Lucky Charm 63P and one or two heifers from previous bull s bloodlines. Through the years my folks added some cattle and I added some heifers and bred cows. About 1985 I took over the operation and decided to raise only registered polled Herefords (of course I continued to have input from my father). I purchased Timber Knoll Ranch s (Frank Foley) herd bull, a 15-G Domino son and four daughters out of a Victorious K-47 U81 cow. I went on to purchase several bulls from Sunrise Ranch (the Saltmarsh family) in central Oregon. An Enoch bull, Wrangler 19D bull and HRP Victor 109W bull. I purchased an Online bull out of Idaho from the Spilt Butte Ranch along with four Elm-Lodge 14H heifers. More currently I purchased a Bogart bull from Bar One Ranch and I purchased a semen interest in C Maui Jim ET from Stallings Polled Herefords. Presently the herd bull I am using is a full brother to the SB BVM 018 Ovation 15U bull from Spilt Butte Ranch, Idaho. Start with a solid foundation and throughout the years keep building the positive traits into your herd and you will be able to produce cattle for the purebred and commercial markets. Fellow Cattlemen, On October 9, 2010, there is an upcoming sale that I would recommend you attend if at all possible. This is a registered Hereford sale of Stallings Herefords along with a number of guest consignors. It will be held in Eugene, Oregon. This is a newer breeder that I think has a very bright future in the production of first class Hereford genetics. Greg, over the past few years, has put together a herd that the industry really needs. After I first met the Stallings family, I really took a liking to the program he was putting together. It reminded me of our operation before we had to disperse in December of 2008. He is not looking at just one aspect but at the entire picture. He is building a herd that is both sound in genetics, but at the top carcass wise. He has spent a lot of time and energy in seeking out the best genetics you can find. Another reason I am so proud of this operation is because they have become involved in the American Junior Hereford Association. They spared no dollars to get Amie and Greg Jr. the best females money would buy and gave the children a chance to show at the national level, doing well in the junior program. Some of these females have made solid dams in their herds of which they should be proud. Even when shown in open competition, they display the type of cattle I m looking for today without them being overly conditioned. They bought an interest in one of their main herd sires, Maui Jim, at our dispersal. To me, he is as good of a herd sire as money can buy. From the shows and sales these animals have been in, they stand second to none. Not often do you find a bull that can breed as many cows as Maui Jim and have him come in from pasture in as good of condition as when he went out. This sale has a number of guests involved. I don t want to offend any of them, but I would like to mention Circle S West of Buhl, Idaho. I have been involved with Tom Wiseman for a number of years. I sold him a number of females and have been involved with him in the junior program. His ideas on a sound cow herd run along the same lines as Greg s and mine. Over the years, a special word in my vocabulary has been integrity. If you get involved in this sale that is the word that will certainly come to the top. I hope to see you on October 9, 2010, in Eugene, Ore. Sincerely, Frank Rodgers 15
