Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. 22 nd Annual Art Appreciation Program Presidential Award Exhibitions 2014-2015 Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. is a subsidiary of the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the most profitable steel company in the world. The Japan-based corporation is the world s second-largest steel producer by volume. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. are pleased to announce that Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, as part of its seventyyear history of support for the visual and performing arts, is sponsoring the Twenty- Second annual set of exhibitions of the artwork of SAIC students. These exhibitions, two each year, will be held at a gallery in the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. Chicago offices at 900 North Michigan Avenue. The gallery is open to visitors by appointment, the opening reception is held at the Four Seasons Hotel to introduce student participants to the Chicago corporate community, and a color pamphlet highlighting the selected artists and their work that will be circulated in conjunction with the exhibition. The Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. Art Appreciation Program will award each exhibition participant an honorarium, averaging $100 for each accepted piece, which will be applied to tuition and will be handled through the Financial Aid Office and the Student's Account Office. This year, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal (NSSM) U.S.A., Inc. will also be purchasing selections of student artwork up to $1,000. NSSM personnel will choose and purchase student work to be added to the corporation s permanent collection. The first exhibition will run from December, 2014 through April, 2015 and the second exhibition from May, 2015 through December, 2015. Exact dates will be announced later. SUMMARY: When: Applications due on Friday, October 17, 2014 Where: Email to saiccommunitypart@saic.edu Notification: Third week in November, 2014 Preliminary Jurying: The preliminary jury, made up of SAIC faculty and staff, will review all applications submitted to determine which entries will be eligible for final jurying. Final Jurying: The final determinations will be made by personnel from Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. in consultation with the chair of the preliminary jury. Twenty pieces will be selected for each exhibition two from each selected artist.
Entry Rules: READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!! 1. All students currently enrolled in a degree program at SAIC may enter. 2. Types of work eligible: painting, drawing, photographs, prints and two-dimensional fiber and ceramics (all objects must be able to hang flat against a wall). 3. Entrants may submit up to 10 images; digital submissions only. The application must be filled out completely for each image with the image number, title, dimensions, medium, date completed, and sale price (indicate if not for sale). Even if the work is not for sale, values for insurance purposes must be listed (max. $2000). Improperly presented entries will not be considered. Keep accurate records so that you will know which piece has been accepted. This is particularly true if all of your work is untitled. All files should be RGB, within 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high, sized at 72 dpi, and oriented such that the image orientation correctly represents the orientation of the object. Format files other than JPEG will not be viewed. Submit only one image per artwork. Label the files with your first and last names and the work s title. 4. Dimensions: not to exceed 4 x5 - max. weight 35 lbs.. Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. can accommodate no more than four works of these dimensions, and may choose to select smaller works entirely. Approximately 8-15 works of smaller sizes can fit into the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal offices. 5. A minimum of two works will be accepted from each selected artist. One piece will be included in the Fall show, and one in the Spring show at the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A. offices. Since the artist will participate in two separate engagements, we cannot accept single-work submissions. However, please do not submit your work in pre-chosen pairs; the jury will select their favorites from your application. 6. In general, students will provide their own framing or final presentation. Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. will be responsible for hanging the artwork under the guidance of a liaison from SAIC. Students will be responsible for transporting their work both to and from Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal offices. Any apparatus necessary for complicated or unusual installation must be included. All work must be ready for hanging (including framing and any hooks or hanging wires needed). 7. Exhibitors must sign a contract with Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal U.S.A., Inc. 8. No work may be removed prior to the close of the exhibition. Accepted art is contracted to remain on exhibit at the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal offices throughout the duration of the exhibition.
