Lesson 7. My school s drama club is preparing Shakespeare s play The Merchant of Venice so that we can perform it at our school festival in August, and I have the best role: Portia. Portia is one of the most significant female [character/ characters] 1 in Shakespeare s plays. She isn t just some princess in a palace. She runs off to Venice, pretends to be a lawyer, and [saves/ save] 2 the life of her husband s friend Antonio by arguing his case at a trial. Anyway, the more I practice the play, the more [close/ closely] 3 I seem to follow her path in Venice. This year my parents are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. [This is because/ This is why] 4 we [have been planning/ have been planned] 5 to take a special family trip for several years. Finally, [for/ with] 6 summer vacation about to start, we [discussed/ discussed about] 7 travel destinations. Naturally the first thing I suggested [was/ wer e] 8 Venice. My younger sister and my parents were all [exciting/ excited] 9 about [see/ seeing] 10 the canals and gondolas, so they agreed right away. I can t believe it! We re going to see the real Venice. It will [be like/ be] 11 the theater come to life! Day 1 This morning we flew into the airport and came to the island by water taxi. After the long flight, it was [refreshing/ refreshing] 12 to travel across the water by boat. Our driver even let my younger sister [take/ to take] 13 a turn steering the boat, and she was [thrilled/ thrilling] 14! [At least / At las t] 15 I stepped into Venice with a [pounding/ pounded] 16 heart, just like Portia. The first thing [that impressed/ impressed] 17 me about the city [were/ was] 18 [how colorful it was / how colorful was i t] 19. The walls [covered with/ were covered with] 20 bright blues, greens, oranges and every other [color/ color] 21. We stayed at a building [that used to / that is used to] 22 be a palace [hundred/ hundreds] 23 of years ago. It was a home [turning into/ turned into] 24 a bed-and-breakfast and [was run by/ was running] 25 a very sweet old lady. The lady told us a lot about the palace and the area as well. By the time we were ready for dinner, I was extremely hungry. I m glad I was so hungry because we went to Dalla Marisa, a traditional Italian restaurant. There are no menus at the restaurant. The guests simply eat whatever Marisa is cooking that day. Since it was Tuesday, we had fresh fish with bread and salad. There was [far/ very] 26 more than I could eat, but it was all delicious. Day 2 My mother said, You can t say you [have gone to/ have been to] 27 Venice [if/ unless] 28 you have ridden a gondola, so we all climbed into one of the famous boats. Our gondolier sang O Sole Mio as the boat floated down a canal, and his powerful voice [was sounded/ sounded] 29 [nearly/ near] 30 professional. After the gondola ride, we took [another/ the other] 31 boat to the Island of Murano, [which/ it] 32 is famous for its glass-blowers. We visited a glass factory and watched an artist [melted / melt] 33 glass in a very hot oven. I couldn t believe [how was he/ how he was] 34 able to make the hot lump of glass into an elegant horse with just [a few/ few] 35 skillful [movement / movements] 36 of his tools. [Another/ The other] 37 thing we had to see while in Venice [were/ was] 38 the mask shops. [Unlike / Like] 39 glass-blowing, the craft of mask-making [has been considered/ has considered] 40 an art in Venice for [hundreds/ hundred] 41 of years. Our trip to the mask shop did not [disappoint / appoin t] 42 us. There [was/ were] 43 [dozens/ dozen] 44 of masks in all different colors and designs. My father said, Why don t you [to pick out/ pick out] 45 a mask to take home? It would be a great souvenir. So my sister picked a green mask with a long nose, and I chose a mask with gold patterns around the eyes. When I put the mask [on/ off] 46, I felt like I was the character Portia, [hiding/ hidden] 47 her identity, ready to save the day. 영어 Day 3 On the third day, we took a tour of the city with a tour guide [named/ who named] 48 Piero. We started in St. Mark s Square, the cultural center of Venice. From there, we could see St. Mark s Basilica, a huge cathedral, [held/ holding] 49 hundreds of [dazzled/ dazzling] 50 mosaics and fantastic works of art. Right next to St Mark s Basilica is Doge s Palace, and we went inside. One of the most impressive [rooms/ room] 51 [was/ were] 52 the Four Doors Room. It [filled/ was filled] 53 with paintings of Greek and Roman myths. My favorite painting was Neptune Offering Gifts to Venice, [which/ it] 54 shows the mythological god of the sea, Neptune, [gave/ giving] 55 treasures of the sea to the city of Venice. Then our tour guide took us to the Compass Room. When he explained [that / what] 56 this was [where/ which] 57 trials [held/ were held] 58 long ago, I could imagine myself as Portia [entering/ entered] 59 the Compass Room [to defend/ offend] 60 the merchant of Venice. 2 Wish you BETTER than Today

PORTIA: A pound of that merchant s flesh is yours. SHYLOCK: Most rightful judge! PORTIA: Wait a minute. There is something else. This [contract / contraction] 61 gives you not a drop of blood. It only gives a pound of flesh. [Unless/ If] 62 you spill one drop of blood, Then by the laws of Venice, You will lose everything you have. SHYLOCK: Is that the law? When we walked out of the Compass Room and across the Bridge of Sighs, we could see the [charming/ charmed] 63 canal [that flows/ flows] 64 under the bridge, [leading to/ led to] 65 the prison. On our way back to the bed-and-breakfast, our tour guide told us, Venice [built / was buil t] 66 on wet and muddy land by people who [were tried/ were trying] 67 to escape from armies from the north and east. When I heard that, I was quite [surprised/ surprising] 68. Who would [think/ have thought] 69 [what / that] 70 this city, [which born/ born] 71 from tears and suffering, would turn into a place of such great beauty? Day 4 I m writing on the airplane, on my way home. As I look down at Venice from the sky and see the canals, I realize [what / that] 72 this city is one of a kind. [That / Now that] 73 I have seen the actual city, I m [very/ even] 74 more [exciting/ excited] 75 about [act / acting] 76 in Shakespeare s play. Our trip to Venice was short, and it s already time to say goodbye. [Thus/ However] 77, I will treasure these memories forever. Wish you BETTER than Today 3
