Overview Level 1 3Credits Through this unit you will learn how to wind hair in a channel setting pattern using rollers and pins to secure. You will know how to select the correct tools and equipment to wind the hair, and how to achieve sections for the size of the roller. What you must learn This section provides you with guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to achieve this unit. Learning outcome 1 Know how to wind hair Identify which tools and techniques to use A consultation is required before deciding which tools and techniques to use. Tools: Rollers longer hair requires larger rollers, shorter hair smaller rollers. Pins to secure rollers in place. Techniques: Channel wind for hair that is styled all going back and off the face. Produce a collage/ style book of a variety of channel winds Presentation: Collage, poster, leaflet (computerised or paper-based) What to include: Rollers placed in hair, channel setting (rollers rows/ channels), variety of rollers and sizes, dressed out roller sets (to see styles that can be achieved from using this winding technique). Describe how the placement of rollers affects the finished look When placing rollers in the hair they can be placed on their base or off their base: On base to ensure maximum root lift, to achieve body and volume throughout. Off base for flat styles where no root lift is required and for minimum body and volume. 4 UHB7
Describe the safety considerations for winding techniques Something that may happen before, during or after the process. Rollers too tight pins placed incorrectly: Can cause damage to hair. Can cause marks in finished style. Hood dryers/electrical equipment not working, check to ensure: Have they been PAT tested? Have they been checked for broken wires? Are they safe to use? Temperature of electrical equipment: Is it suitable to dry the hair? Check throughout service. Learning outcome 2 Be able to wind hair Prepare yourself and your work area for winding technique Prepare yourself: Clean clothes, clean shoes, minimal jewellery and piercings, clean hair, clean teeth and fresh breath, clean nails. Prepare your work area: Clean and hygienic, good lighting and ventilation, covering for the table or trolley, jar with sterilising fluid, tools and equipment in a safe working position. Prepare tools and equipment: Tools setting rollers, setting pins, detangling comb, tail comb, flat/ bristle brush. Equipment hood dryer, trolley/work surface, water spray. UHB7 5
What you must learn Identify any problems that may affect the technique Select tools and equipment to wind hair Deal with yourself: Spillage wipe immediately. Hair becomes dry during winding re-damp using a water spray. Hair is hanging off the ends of the rollers section too wide, remove and re-section. Run out of rollers during service ensure full trolley layout before starting, replenish if needed. Ask for help: Lack of product see manager or technician for more product. Scalp condition (non-contagious) cuts and abrasions, psoriasis. Scalp condition (contagious) head lice/nits. If in doubt always seek help. Follow manufacturer s instructions when using tools and equipment. Tools: Setting rollers for moulding hair to achieve a curl. Setting pins used during wet setting to secure roller in place. Detangling comb to remove knots prior to rollering. Tail comb for clean, even sectioning throughout. Hair net to secure hair under dryer. Equipment: Personal protective equipment for yourself gown, plastic cape. Hood dryer to remove moisture during the drying process. Water spray to keep hair damp during winding service. Trolley/work surface to place tools for ease of use. 6 UHB7
Use hygienic and safe methods of working Habia Carry out a channel wind using rollers Follow safe methods of working: Carry out service without causing danger or damage to yourself or your work area intentionally or by accident, follow health and safety policies for working safely. Preparation: Ensure everything is ready before you start, place products, tools and equipment close at hand on trolley or work surface. How to work hygienically: Ensure tools and equipment are sterilised. Clean the work area when complete. Hazards and risks: Store, handle, use, dispose of tools and equipment correctly, avoid trailing wires, clean up spillages. Channel winding with setting rollers and pins: 1. Prepare the hair by dampening with water spray. 2. Detangle hair with comb. 3. Section hair using tail comb, from front hairline to nape. This section should be three-quarters of the length of the roller and the same width as roller. 4. Comb hair vertically away from head, wind hair using moderate tension. 5. Ensure rollers are all sat on their base for maximum root lift. 6. Repeat in channels working from the front to the back. 7. Secure roller with setting pin. 8. Ensure each section is of equal size, no loose ends and rollers are secured comfortably. 9. Keep hair damp during winding. 10. Use hair net. 11. Dry hair under hood dryer. 12. Allow to cool before removing the rollers. 13. Check ends for fish hooks/buckled ends. UHB7 7
