Recogizig ski cacers ACTINIC KERATOSIS A commo type of su-related ski damage is actiic keratosis, also kow as solar keratosis. Actiic keratosis lesios ca vary i color from flesh toe to reddish brow. The America Cacer Society recommeds that your doctor regularly track areas of ski with such lesios for chages that could idicate cacer. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA The majority of ski cacers are basal cell carciomas, typically foud o areas exposed to the su, such as the head ad eck. If foud ad treated, these slowgrowig cacers rarely spread to other parts of the body. If left utreated, however, a basal cell carcioma may grow ito earby tissue ad boe. Oce treated, a basal cell carcioma may retur. For this reaso, those who have these cacers treated should perform frequet self-exams ad have a dermatologist examie them regularly. Basal cell carciomas ofte appear as flat, firm, pale areas or as small, raised, pik or red, traslucet, shiy, waxy areas that may bleed after mior ijury. ATYPICAL MOLE: DYSPLASTIC NEVI This uusual type of beig mole ca sometimes resemble melaoma. While they are ot cacerous, if you have 4 or more atypical moles, have had melaoma i the past, or have a first-degree relative who has had melaoma, you may be at a icreased risk of melaoma. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA Squamous cell carcioma accouts for about 20% of ski cacers. It most ofte appears o ski that receives frequet su exposure, such as the face, ears, eck, ad hads. These carciomas are more likely to spread to lymph odes or to more distat parts of the body compared with basal cell carciomas. Squamous cell carciomas may appear as growig lumps, ofte with a rough surface, or as flat, reddish patches that grow slowly. MELANOMA Melaoma is the most serious form of ski cacer. However, melaoma is almost always curable i its early stages. I most cases, melaoma starts as a flat, darkcolored spot that looks like a freckle. The edges are irregular ad the whole spot is usually asymmetrical. There are ofte 2 or more colors withi the spot (gray, red, black, ad brow mixtures). Early detectio ca save your life Most moles are harmless, but it is importat to recogize chages i a mole that ca suggest that a melaoma may be developig. ABNORMAL MOLE A is for asymmetrical: Oe half of the mole does ot match the other. B is for border: The mole has a irregular, ragged, or blurred edge. C is for color: The mole is varied from oe area to aother; has shades of ta, brow, or black; ad is sometimes blue, red, or white. D is for diameter: The mole is wider tha a quarter ich or is smaller but growig. E is for evolvig: A evolvig mole is oe that is chagig i terms of size, shape, shades of color, or symptoms such as bleedig, itchig, or tederess.
