About the program A serious interest in the fashion industry could lead you to an exhilarating career buying, presenting or even developing clothing lines for some of the nation s hottest brands. At Mercyhurst University, our curriculum prepares you to succeed in every aspect of the fashion industry. That s because, in addition to a strong curriculum that teaches you the essentials, you ll also have plenty of opportunities to gain real-world, hands-on experience through internships, portfolio development and the optional FIT Visiting Student Program in New York City. The success of our program is evident in the success of our graduates, some of whom have been hired by well-known companies, such as: Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Macy s, Nine West, Levi Strauss and Co., Express and American Eagle. For a complete overview of the fashion merchandising program, please visit fashion.mercyhurst.edu.

Impressive Connections ANNIE (HEIDLER) BLACK CLASS OF 2002 ASSISTANT BUYER FOR SKINCARE, HSN ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. Former employers: Abercrombie & Fitch, J.Crew I chose Mercyhurst because it offered small classes and a more personal learning experience. Small classes allowed for the freedom to ask questions and get answers frequently. It also gave me the opportunity to have my own resources, such as a sewing machine and a computer station to create design concepts. It only took me a few months after graduation before I was accepted into the management training program at Abercrombie and Fitch in Pittsburgh. The professors were very helpful in providing the needed references for my portfolio. They were also helpful in providing connections with past graduates who were able to give me further career guidance.

I was drawn to Mercyhurst s fashion merchandising program because of the opportunity to spend a year in New York City in the FIT Visiting Student Program; the excellent student-tofaculty ratio; and the balanced curriculum of fashion, business, clothing construction, textiles and merchandising. While my career path hasn t been in design, it s absolutely necessary to understand how clothing is constructed for nearly all jobs in the fashion industry. At Mercyhurst, we used a hands-on approach to apply the curriculum we learned. My education has proven helpful when I need to frequently apply my understanding of different fabrics and construction methods in my job. Comprehensive Education SHARON (PROY) BOSCO CLASS OF 2008 WHOLESALE HYBRID SELLING MANAGER, BCBG MAX AZRIA GROUP CHICAGO, ILL. Former employer: Fendi

The first school I visited was the Fashion Institute of Technology and it was far too overwhelming. I knew that it wasn t the college environment I was searching for, and I wasn t ready to be thrown into the big city just yet. I was sold on Mercyhurst because of the gorgeous campus setting, intimate class sizes and the option to go to FIT my senior year. Diverse Studies LINDSEY GROGINSKI CLASS OF 2012 PR & MARKETING ASSISTANT, KLEINFELD BRIDAL NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. The best experiences with the fashion merchandising program came with the traveling opportunities. My all-time favorite experience was our trip to Italy. It was an amazing learning experience where I fell in love with the Italian cities and fashion life, especially in Milan. I also learned so much when traveling to New York City my freshman year we had the opportunity to meet Mercyhurst alumni in the fashion industry. These experiences really enabled me to narrow down what avenues in the fashion world I wanted to pursue.

I believe the Mercyhurst Fashion Merchandising program is very well-rounded. Having a variety of fashion courses and experience building my textile book; sewing garments; visiting studios in New York City were much more impactful than simply reading about it in a textbook. These experiences helped to point me in the right direction. After graduation, I went to Los Angeles for my professional designation degree. Since then, I ve kept in close contact with the fashion merchandising professors, who were more than helpful in my job search and networking. All of the instructors expect a lot from you and they set the bar high for their students. Teaching me to set the bar high to go those couple extra steps for a project or to go above and beyond on a presentation has definitely paid off in my career. High Standards ANGIE PASCOE CLASS OF 2007 ASSISTANT BUYER, DSW, INC. COLUMBUS, OHIO

Practical Learning MONICA POROSTOSKY CLASS OF 2008 SR. ASSISTANT BUYER OF FINE JEWELRY, SAKS FIFTH AVE. NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. Some of my favorite memories as a fashion merchandising student at Mercyhurst came from the late nights in the sewing room. I loved some of our class projects that gave us creative freedom because I exceled with these types of lessons. I am more of a hands-on learner as opposed to one who learns from reading a textbook. Through Mercyhurst, I honed my skills of time management, teamwork, critical thinking, public speaking and leadership to help me land a job. After graduation, I moved to New York City and was hired by Macys.com as a merchandise assistant. I used my connections I made in New York during my first year at FIT, as well as Mercyhurst alumni connections that I had made over the years.
