Rione Sanità: Yesterday, today, and tomorrow
L ALTRA NAPOLI ONLUS L Altra Napoli Onlus (www.altranapoli.it), was founded in October 2005, by a group of in situ Neapolis, united by a common goal to take a personal and direct stand in halting the downward spiral of social deprivation in the city of Naples. L Altra Napoli Onlus is currently engaged in an ambitious philanthropic project designed to restore the social and urban infrastructure of the district Rione Sanità. The project submitted to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2006 - sets out to demonstrate that the rehabilitation of degraded areas not only improves the quality of life of the residents, but also empowers them to become active citizens.
THE TERRITORY The Rione Sanità is a district close to the historical city centre of Naples. Its sociodemographic and urban organisation defines it as a peripheral district of the city. The highly denselypopulated (32.000 people in 2 sq. km) Sanità district is degraded, lacks urban amenities and many of its inhabitants live on the borderline of poverty.
THE TERRITORY Problems such as drug addiction, indebtedness and imprisonment are widespread among the population, and most women are obliged to work in conditions of limited (or inexistent) social protection in order to provide their families with the means of subsistence.
THE TERRITORY Unemployment is very high in the area (42.7%) and if we consider the size of the entire inactive population, together with the chronic unemployed, we find a ratio of three gainfully employed workers to every ten citizens
THE GLOBAL PROJECT The Sanità District: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow The Rione Sanità project comprises 11 modules, many of which are already functioning schemes implemented by private bodies and foundations. It is possible to define two main types of impact areas: urban restoration social rehabilitation.
THE ACHIEVED OBJECTIVES THE ORANGE GARDEN The Orange Garden is a classical example of how urban rehabilitation can act as a driving force for the social cultural development of a quarter This was a small abandoned garden that was restored and opened thanks to the priest Don Antonio Loffredo, and thanks to the contribution of Fondazione Banco di Napoli and other sponsors
Today it is one of the few green areas in the quarter, and it can be used to stage children s entertainment

SAN GENNARO EXTRA MOENIA AND THE TOURISTIC PROJECT After 41 years Altra Napoli has reopened the palaeo-christian Basilica of San Gennaro extra moenia, thanks to a project sponsored by the Cardinal of Naples S.E. Crescenzio Sepe, and the contribution of the Fondazione per il Sud. The re-opening of the Basilica forms part of a wider project denominated San Gennaro extra moenia: a gateway from the past to the future -whose objective is to open up the quarter to the city and take advantage of the current city of tourists visiting Naples in order to accompany them to the Rione Sanità. Following up this initiative, on 19 September a new tour of the Rione Sanità - termed The sacred mile IL MIGLIO SACRO - was officially inaugurated, which will be entirely run by a young peoples corporative La Paranza. The members of the cooperative will welcome tourists, and accompany them in their visit to the quarter - especially to Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità and its catacombs thereby promoting a cultural and economic activity to the benefit of the entire local community. www.catacombedinapoli.it
The Sanita Academy Thanks to the contribution of the Johnson & Johnson foundation, L Altra Napoli is restructuring the old church of San Vincenzo e Immacolata alla Sanità. The premises of this deconsecrated 18thcentury church will be entirely restored in order to turn the former sacristy into premises for gymnastic and psychomotorial activities for children, pregnant women and the elderly. Residents will thus benefit from one of the very few spaces dedicated to sport in the district. This refurbishing project will also offer a stable and comfortable location for the theatrical laboratory which for a number of years has been managed by the theatrical Association Nuovo Teatro Sanità, which has already instilled a passion for the theatre in 100 young people in the district and has given them the firm will not to capitulate to the negativity that surrounds them.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S ORCHESTRA SANITANSAMBLE
here is the link to watch the video: THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S ORCHESTRA SANITANSAMBLE Thanks to the contribution of Autostrade per L Italia and Tangenziale di Napoli, L Altra Napoli Onlus has set up in 2008 a Young People's Chamber Orchestra for 34 children from the quarter and entrusted 9 music teachers and an orchestra director with their musical education. In the wake of similar initiatives taken in other difficult cities such as Caracas, the project termed Sanitansamble sets out to encourage the growth of a classical musical orchestra able to exploit the natural gifts of some children in the quarter through an intense, multi-week teaching programme. The project is already two years old and has witnessed an extraordinary participation by the children and their families, as well as the performance of some public concerts (e.g. the Auditorium of the Rai in Naples). For the children of Sanitansamble this constitutes an excellent opportunity to develop an experience of social aggregation and the bases for future employment. On Saturday 1st of october 2011 the young musicians of Sanitansamble have played for the President of Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, in occasiono of his second visit to the Sanità district.
On June 2014 the Sanitansamble have played for the Papa Francesco.
In 2011, L Altra Napoli Onlus received funding from Fondazione con il Sud to restructure the monumental convent of San Nicola da Tolentino, that carries important artistic and cultural value. The main objective of the project is to create employment opportunities for the young people of the territory by building products and services for the tourism industry (accommodation to tourists etc.). The restructured complex will be inaugurated by the end of 2014. NAPOLIXENIA
