FLAG DESCRIPTION & TERMINOLOGY A B C D E F G H I J Canton: Blue field, white stars. Also known as Field or Jack. Heading: Heavy fabric used to secure flag to the halyard line, usually made of durable cotton or synthetic canvas. Grommet: Brass ring or eyelet (normally in the heading) for mounting outdoor flags. Truck: The device at the top of an outdoor pole that houses the pulley wheel. Finial: A decorative top for a flag pole, often an eagle, spear or ball. Snap Hooks: Hardware made of either brass or molded nylon to attach the flag to the halyard line. Cleat: The device used to secure the bottom of the flagpole halyard. Halyard: Rope used to raise the flag; can be external and tied to a cleat, or internal. Flash Collar: The cover for the base of the pole, used for cosmetic and protective purposes. Foundation Tube: Cylinder tube used as a form for the concrete base of an in-ground flag pole. Outrigger A flagpole mounted on a building at an angle other than vertical. D E C Fly End The end of the flag that flies in the breeze, also the part of the flag that endures the most stress. Crown A flag with pole hem and fringe for indoor display and parade use. Hoist End The part of the flag that attaches to the halyard. Roped Heading A flag where the hoisted end is reinforced with a rope throughout the heading. G F H B A I SST A type of heading that uses the base fabric of the flag to construct a sleeve that usually slides over a pole, with a tab to attach near top. Fabric Sleeve A type of heading that adds a piece of fabric to an existing flag to construct a sleeve that usually slides over a pole, with a tab to attach near top. Pole Hem The same heading as fabric sleeve but with a fabric lining. DETERMINING FLAG SIZE The length of the flag should be at least 1 4 the height of the pole. For example, a 40 pole requires a 6 x 10 flag or larger. This guideline applies to poles 20 and larger. Most residential flags are 3 x 5 or 4 x 6. Most small industrial and commercial buildings use either a 5 x 8 or a 6 x 10 flag. Major industrial, municipal and government buildings require 8 x 12 and larger. However, the size of the pole is the determining factor. Colorfast refers to the colors retaining their base colors. Some color lightening, due to exposure to the sun, is natural, and will not effect the usability of the flag and therefore is not covered under this guarantee. Fabric tears and fraying, as a result of high winds and other climatic conditions, as well as torn flags and normal wear, are not covered by this guarantee.
