IT S TIME TO... COMBAT OCCUPATIONAL SKIN DISEASE The Deb Skin Care Programme

OCCUPATIONAL SKIN DISEASE AN INVISIBLE THREAT to Efficiency, Health & Well-being Occupational skin disease is a serious health issue that currently goes largely unreported in the workplace; an invisible threat that affects both an organisation s efficiency and the health and well-being of its employees. Occupational skin diseases are among the three most frequent groups of occupational diseases World Health Organisation Global Workshop, 2011 The incidence of occupational skin diseases in Europe may be underestimated by 10 to 50 times. European Dermatology Forum White Book Skin Diseases in Europe Risk for Employees Sickness absence from work Reduced efficiency at work Reduced pay Lower morale and self-esteem In worst cases, change of career Risk for Employers Bad publicity Increased cost due to sickness days Reduced productivity Increased training & recruitment costs In worst cases, potential compensation claims The majority of cases of occupational skin disease are irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, accounting for up to 95%, followed by skin cancer. Occupational skin diseases are estimated to cost the EU 600m each year, resulting in around 3m lost working days and force many workers to change jobs. European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, Fact Sheet No.40 In many instances dermal exposure is the principle route of exposure, especially for chemicals that are relatively nonvolatile. OSHA Technical Manual, Section 11, Chapter 2 Irritant Contact Dermatitis Allergic Contact Dermatitis Skin Cancer However, most cases can be avoided by implementing structured skin management processes to reduce the risk of skin exposure to irritating substances and hazards. Skin diseases are the second most common work-related health problem in Europe. They represent more than 7% of all occupational illnesses and are one of the most important emerging risks related to the exposure to chemical, physical and biological risk factors. SAFE WORKING PRACTICES (SWP) PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) SKIN CARE

ESSENTIAL Skin Care Products The Deb Stoko Range This world leading skin care product range consists of unrivalled quality products and an incomparable breadth of range for all industry sectors. The Deb Stoko Range addresses the skin care requirements and preferences of all end users that are essential for effective skin health. A coalition of the world s most eminent dermatologists recommend the daily, routine use of protect and restore skin creams is essential to reduce the risk of occupational skin disease and help keep skin healthy. 1 Addressing and reducing occupational skin disease requires an integrated skin care product approach to protect, cleanse and restore the skin. This is achieved with a daily best practice routine of using essential skin care products consisting of: Protect creams for application to clean hands prior to working or after washing hands Appropriate hand cleansers to be used as soon as possible after hands become contaminated and/or immediately before/after visiting the toilet Restore creams for application to clean hands at the end of the day/shift or prior to prolonged breaks 4 1 Multi-modal scientific study with analysis and review of 75 published workplace based skin care studies; 2015

WHY USE Skin Creams? The provision and compliance with occupational skin creams is simply not enough, with only around 1 in 10 workers routinely following best practice. Protect creams are specially formulated for specific applications to leave a protective layer on the surface of the skin. Restore creams are specially formulated for specific skin conditions to improve skin strength by moisturising, nourishing and conditioning the skin, preventing it from becoming dry or damaged which can eventually lead to occupational skin disease. They provide the following benefits: What happens when creams are not used: Reduce direct skin contact with specific types of physical contaminants and micro-organisms Help retain natural lipids and moisture in the skin whilst working Improve comfort and skin strength when wearing PPE, particularly gloves and footwear Protect skin against exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays or cold working conditions Make skin quicker and easier to clean with less aggressive cleansers Natural lipids and moisture are worn away causing the skin cells to start delaminating. Physical contaminants and micro-organisms enter the skin layers which if left untreated can lead to infections and skin disease. 5

LOCATION Availability & Accessibility of Creams A key element to skin care compliance is ensuring that the appropriate products are available and accessible to workers where and when they are required. As such, the provision of skin care must take into account normal workflows and worker behaviour. The Deb Stoko Range Incorporates options for communal dispensing of products, or personal issue packs to address specific needs and situations. Whilst appropriate hand cleansers will need to be located at sinks specified for hand washing use, the location and availability of protect and restore creams will vary. Key location areas: In changing rooms At the entrance to work areas In rest areas and canteens In washrooms and at dedicated hand washing points At the work point Mobile working e.g. vans and work cabins Personal issue for specific applications or skin conditions PPE vending machines where available and appropriate It is highly recommended that workers are involved in deciding the type of pack format required and the location of creams to optimise compliance. WHAT is needed? WHERE is it needed? 6

SELECTING Appropriate Creams Selecting the appropriate creams is vital for safety & health Once skin exposure has been assessed and minimised through elimination or substitution of potentially harmful substances or the implementation of SWP and PPE, it is vital that a proper workplace assessment is conducted to ensure the correct Deb Stoko Protect and Restore creams are selected for use by considering the following factors: PROTECT CREAMS Type of Contamination Degree of Contamination PPE Use Type and frequency of wear Environmental Considerations Water-based only Light Gloves Exposure to UVA & UVB sun rays Oil-based & mechanical only Both oil & water based Medium Heavy Footwear Exposure to artificial UVC rays (e.g. welding arc) Dry materials & powders Cold working conditions Adherent substances RESTORE CREAMS For both Protect and Restore cream there are also additional preference factors that will guide selection.
