Skills Canada National Competition Contest Description / Post-Secondary May 27-30, 2015 Saskatoon

1. The Importance of Essential Skills for Careers in the Skilled Trades and Technology SCC is currently working with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) in order to bring awareness to the importance of Essential Skills that are absolutely crucial for success in the workforce. This is part of an ongoing initiative that requires the integration and identification of Essential Skills in contest descriptions, projects, and project documents. Essential skills are used in nearly every job and at different levels of complexity. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. Good Essential Skills means you will understand and remember concepts introduced in technical training. The level of Essential Skills required for most trades is as high or higher than it is for many office jobs. The following 9 skills have been identified and validated as key essential skills for the workplace in the legend below: 1 Numeracy, 2 Oral Communication, 3 Working with Others, 4 Continuous Learning, 5 Reading Text, 6 Writing, 7 Thinking, 8 Document Use, 9 Digital These essential skills have been identified with in section 2.3 and/or 3.2 of your Contest Description. The top three Essential Skills for your area of competition have been identified on your Project and all other supporting project documents. 2. CONTEST INTRODUCTION 2.1 Purpose of the Challenge. The principal function of an aesthetician is to give beauty care to persons with the main purpose of improving their appearance as well as giving the people a physical and psychological well being. By general means, the essential part of this work is to treat different parts of the body including specific care to facial skin, specific care for the hands, specific care of the body, and the application of makeup, while demonstrating professionalism and complying with occupational health and safety. 2.2 Duration of contest. 12 hours 2.3 Skills and Knowledge to be tested. Advanced Facial with arm massage The competitor will demonstrate a specific care facial using the Sponsor s products and machines, arm and hand massage manipulations after the application of a specialty mask. Spa manicure with nail art The competitor will demonstrate a Spa manicure using Sponsor s products and will duplicate the nail art. Specific Care Body Therapy Treatment 7 The competitor will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a body treatment including cleansing, exfoliation, wrap, Lomi Lomi massage. Creative Make up The competitor will duplicate the evening look posted on the web site and the creative Make-Up Design presented to them the morning of the competition Essential Skills 5 Reading, 2 Oral Communication 7 Thinking (Problem solving, Job task planning and Organizing) 3. CONTEST DESCRIPTION 3.1 List of documents produced and timeline for when competitors have access to the documents. DOCUMENT DATE OF DISTRIBUTION VIA WEBSITE Project January, 2015 Manicure nail art design January, 2015 Product list January, 2015 Make up Design March, 2015 3.2 Tasks that will be performed during the contest: Spa Manicure with Nail Art Objectives: perform a Spa manicure which includes, nail and cuticle work, hand exfoliation, arm and hand massage, hand masque application of base, top coat and polish followed by the application of the posted nail art (in the project). The nail art is to be applied to all ten fingers. No colour bleeding and no corrections during the application. Note: Nail art must be free hand using only the nail art brushes and dotter supplied by the Sponsor. Decals polish with built in striper brush, corrector pens, guideline tape, or any other tool will not be allowed. Nail art brushes may not be adjusted in any way. Body Therapy Treatment Objectives: To perform a body treatment that includes cleansing, exfoliation a wrap and a 30 minute Lomi Lomi massage. Page 3

Creative Make Up Objectives: duplicate, the makeup look as posted (in the project). The makeup should be applied as an exact duplicate according to the picture provided. Artificial lashes must be applied to complete the look before the fantasy aspect is started. After the first judging, competitors will then continue with the duplication of the Creative aspect presented to the competitors the day of the competition. A black hat (provided by competitor) should be applied to finish the look, but no marks will be awarded. Advanced Facial with Electrotherapy Objectives: Perform an advanced facial treatment using electrotherapy that meets the needs of the client s skin. The skin must be analyzed, findings recorded on the provided technical chart 8 and the facial must be based on that analysis. 7 *This will be part of the essential skills component. The application of a hand and arm massage must be performed during the timing of the contour mask. Note: It is the candidate s responsibility to prepare for the competition by becoming familiar with the products and machines (refer to attached list) to be used during the competition. 4. Other equipment and material must be approved by NTC. 4.3 Required clothing provided by competitor Uniform provided by the competitor White, non slip, flat or low heel, closed toed shoes with no laces (Provided by competitor, refer to examples in project) No jewellery which may interfere with the task being performed or place the model or aesthetician at risk Hair must be tidy and not interfere with the task being performed. 5. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 5.1 List of required personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by competitors and used as needed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 7.1 Consecutive translation If consecutive translation is required on site, the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this service might not be guaranteed. 7.2 Tie (No ties are allowed) In the event of a tie, the candidate with the highest score in the Facial competition will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie in the Facial competition, the candidate with the highest score in the body therapy competition will be declared the winner. 7.3 Competition rules Please refer to the competition rules of the Skills Canada National Competition. 8.
