background: Austrian village from train 50mm ISO 200 f/8 1/400s PhotoEx: Austria & Switzerland Fast Facts photo: Fall of the Angels, St. Michael s Church, Vienna, Austria 50mm ISO 100 f/2 1/100s The Institute of Photographic Studies is pleased to invite you on our annual PhotoEx adventure to Europe. This is your opportunity to see amazing sights, learn fascinating history, experience unique culture, and photograph it all with other Christians. If you re tired of being dragged away from a shot just as the light is getting good or always trailing behind your friends to grab a quick photo, this is the trip for you! Unlike other travel opportunities, IPS PhotoEx trips are designed by Christian photographers for Christian photographers, and are led by qualified instructors who can guide you in the process of creating great images. Our 2013 destinations are Austria and Switzerland, with stops in Vienna, Salzburg, and Zurich. Participants will fly into Vienna, arriving on October 14th. Four days will be spent experiencing the rich culture of the city that dominated European politics for more than half a millennium. Here you can walk the halls of the Hapsburgs, explore their cathedrals, revel in their art, and even experience a show from their famous Lipizzaner Stallions. On October 18th we will get our first glimpses of the Austrian countryside as we train from Vienna to Salzburg. For most, Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, one of the most illustrious musicians of all time. To others, Salzburg represents the Sound of Music, featuring many of the original historic places as well as filming locations for the movie. A second train ride will pull you across some of the most beautiful scenery in the world as we ride from Salzburg to Zurich on October 20th. Switzerland is home to chocolate, watches, neutrality and international finance, and Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. We ll spend 2 full and 2 partial days exploring Zurich before participants fly home on October 23 with photos, souvenirs and memories to last a lifetime. Europe is a photographers paradise, but without the proper guide it can be quite confusing. You can rely on IPS to provide you with safe lodging, reliable transportation and fantastic food throughout your trip without the hassle of hundreds of hours of research and days of uncertainty. We have the experience and the expertise to make this the travel adventure of a lifetime! We have done our best to make sure the information in this brochure is accurate. Please be aware that it is the nature of international travel that the specific plans we have outlined for each day are subject to change without warning. We will keep registered team members updated of changes before and during the trip. Dates. October 14-23, 2013 Location. background: Saint Peter s Church, Vienna 50mm ISO 100 f/2 1/3200s background: Lipizzaner stallion 50mm ISO 100 f/2 1/400s Part 1 Vienna To many Americans, all of Europe feels like a museum; stories of distant past and ancient glories. Vienna is different. Despite its rich history and long service as the capital of Europe, Vienna is still alive, and its history a current reality. In Rome one can walk the paths of emperors once illuminated by torches. Vienna s most recent emperors enjoyed electricity. In Vienna you can still hear world class musicians playing Beethoven and Straus in the very rooms their works were premiered. We invite you to explore Europe s past and connect it with your own living present in Vienna. Day 1 - October 14 You will arrive in Vienna tired after some long flights, but filled with excitement to begin exploring. Your PhotoEx staff will meet you at the airport and bring you to the hostel to unload your things and freshen up. Grab a cup of coffee, cause we re off to the incredible Naschmarkt, Vienna s largest market, to dive straight into Viennese culture. Enjoy a fantastic meal before crawling into bed a little early after a very long day. Day 2 - October 15 For 600 years the Habsburg family was the most powerful in Europe. Today you will explore where they lived and worshipped. The Hofburg Palace has been the seat of Austrian government since 1279 and served as the home of the Holy Roman Emperor for more than 300 years. Emperor Franz Josef couldn t fathom the camera you ll have in your hand, but you ll get a pretty good idea of the world in which he lived. Just 2 kilometers away rise the towering spires of Stephansdom (St. Stephen s Cathedral). The original construction was completed in 1160, but additions, renovations, and reconstructions continue until this day. Tour the catacombs to come face to face with bubonic plague victims or climb the 343 stairs of the South Tower for an incredible view over Vienna. photo: PhotoEx:London & Paris 2012 24mm ISO 100 f/5.6 1/2500s Day 3 - October 16 On your third day in Vienna you get to choose your own adventure. For the horse lovers in our midst there are the Lipizzaner stallions. This legendary line dates back to 1520 when Ferdinand I imported Spanish horses for the imperial palace. The Morgenarbeit, or Morning Training session at the Spanish Riding School is a 2 hour practice for horse and your opportunity to see these Imperial horses in person. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited. If horses aren t your thing, join the group in exploring the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts). As you might expect, since the Habsburgs controlled so much real estate across Europe, they had access to artistic and cultural treasures almost beyond belief. In the Kunsthistorisches antiquities collection you will come face to face with Egyptian, Greek and Roman treasures. Continue exploring to find works by Peter Paul Rubens, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Salvador Dali, Rembrandt, Raphael, and Caravaggio among others. When you and your new friends need a break, there are plenty of excellent cafés nearby for a bit of lunch or a splash of Vienna s famous coffee. Still want to see more? Take a quick walk down the street to the Museum of Natural History for a glimpse at Venus of Galgenberg (32,000 B.C.), the world s oldest figurative sculpture. Regardless of your day, we ll all meet up for a fantastic dinner before reveling in the music that calls Vienna home. Tonight you ll hear a musical collection written by some of Austria s most famous composers, played in the very halls for which they were written.

background: Take the train across Austria 50mm ISO 200 f/8 1/250s background: Rowan and Judson riding the rails in England before PhotoEx:Ireland, 2010 Typical Daily Schedule PhotoEx Team We like to keep things pretty relaxed on PhotoEx:Austria & Switzerland. Each day we ll eat breakfast before we head out as a group for our first main sight. Upon arrival, we ll set up a time and place to meet and give you the opportunity to explore the area with your friends. You ll purchase your own lunch, giving you the chance to enjoy a sit-down restaurant, or to grab a croissant to not waste a moment of exploration. We will usually meet up and move to another location within the city at some point in the early afternoon. For dinner each day we will meet up at a nice, sit-down restaurant to share photos, stories, and enjoy the tastes of Europe. Occasional night shoots will give you the chance to create some amazing wall art! Each evening we will wrap up with an overview of the next day, explaining the itinerary and giving you a historical review of why what you re about to see and experience is significant. As the owners of IPS, they have trained more than 1200 photography students over the past 14 years, authored numerous photography curricula, led more than a dozen PhotoEx trips, and taught over 100 workshops. Together they have traveled extensively across 4 continents and personally researched this PhotoEx. RoJo live in Portland, OR and are expecting their first son in May 2013. This trip will be the first stamp in his passport, even though he s already been to Fiji and New Zealand! Judson Alphin, M.A. Judson is a doctoral student at Oxford University in the field of history. In addition to his studies, Judson works for a study abroad program, hosting students from all of the world and assisting them with the transition from home to European culture. Judson is also an avid photographer, working for various clients including Oxford University and Summit Ministries when he should probably be writing his thesis. background: Salzburg, Austria Part 2 Salzburg Chances are good that Salzburg needs no introduction. As the home of the composer Mozart and the von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame, Salzburg s reputation is much larger than its stature. Despite being the fourth largest city in Austria, Salzburg is home to only 150,000 residents, giving us the chance to experience a much smaller version of Austrian city life. Small in numbers but enormous in stature, Salzburg offers plenty to do and will leave you wanting more! Day 4 - October 17 The day you arrive in Salzburg will also be your first experience of the Austrian countryside. We ll enjoy a 3 hour train ride from Vienna to Salzburg with plenty of window-view sights along the way. Keep your shutter speed fast, cause camera shake is just as evil in Austria! After arriving in the city, you will have a chance to explore the internationally renounced baroque architecture gracing Salzburg s ancient streets before meeting up for a fantastic dinner in the oldest restaurant in Europe. Did you read that? Yes... we are taking you to the OLDEST RESTAURANT IN EUROPE! Saint Peter s Beer Cellar dates back to 803 in written records. Legend has it that Christopher Columbus and Charlemagne dined here too! If the weather s nice, we re going to want to shoot tonight in one of the best preserved Old Town city centers in Europe. 2. Sound of Music tour; We all know that movies aren t real, but there are some filming locations and actual von Trapp family history in the area. Check out the Schloss Leopoldskron for So long, farewell. Pegasus fountain is the home to Do- Re-Mi ; and Sixteen going on seventeen can be reenacted in Hellbrunn Park. The real von Trapp family home is now Villa Trapp, a guest house located in a private park. 3 Festung Hohensalzburg; By no means your last or least option, take the funicular up to the 900 year old fortress on top of the cliffs overlooking Salzburg. This fortress is one of the biggest and best preserved in Europe and offers spectacular views over Salzburg and the surrounding countryside. Originally built in 1077 (just 11 years after William the Conqueror invaded England!), what began as a modest bailey now houses a banqueting hall with a gold-studded ceiling. Explore ramparts, halls, and views for the day or make this a quick jaunt before a second tour in the city. Day 6 - October 19 Salz is German for salt, so it s not surprising that the region once drew its wealth and influence from Salzwelten, the world s oldest mine. Today we ll catch a quick train from Salzburg to Hallein, and the bus on to Bad Dürrnberg, to tour this amazing mine and even cross the border into Germany! At the mine we ll slip into boiler suits before descending into the bowels of the earth. Our tour aboard a mining train passes through a mazes of salty passageways, excavated over thousands of years, before crossing underground into Germany. Then we ll slip down an 81-foot slide and cross the salt lake on a wooden raft. Next a 140-foot slide brings us 700 feet underground and back into Austria. Don t worry... this is a guided tour, so there s no getting lost! Day 5 - October 18 There are a lot of great options for today, depending on your muse. We recommend one (or maybe more!) of three great tours: 1. Mozart tour; As the home of Mozart, Salzburg offers a number of significant places to the life of the composer. Check out Mozart s Geburtshaus where Mozart was born and raised and photograph a lock of his hair. Then make your way to the Mozart-Wohnhaus to see his original pianoforte and listen to rare recordings of his works.

background: Night panorama of Zurich 20mm ISO 1600 f/2.8 1/40s Part 3 Zurich Switzerland. The word inspires thoughts of mountains, neutrality, funny clothes, chocolate, watches, and pocket knives. As Switzerland s largest city, Zurich is home to all of these things and more. Zurich s permanent settlement was founded by the Romans in 15BC, but there are evidences of much older settlements in the area. In 1519, Zurich was the center of the Swiss Reformation. Consistently voted as having the best quality of life, Zurich is also one of the richest cities in the world. Day 1 - October 20 We ll reach Zurich late in the day after riding the rails across some of the most idyllic landscapes you ll ever see. Our arrival station, Zürich Hauptbahnhof, is a piece of history itself as the terminus of the first railroad in Switzerland. Today it is one of the busiest railway stations in the world with over 2900 trains arriving and departing each day. From the train station we ll make our way to our new lodgings before feasting on our first Swiss meal. Day 2 - October 21 If the weather s nice, we ll start our day on Lake Zurich with a scenic boat cruise featuring towering Alps at one end of the lake and the beautiful city on the other. Not bad, Switzerland. Not bad at all! Upon disembarkation, we ll snoop around the ancient streets of Old Town. We ll start with Saint Peter s church, home of the largest clock face in Europe. Then we ll walk in the steps of the famous Swiss reformer, Huldrych Zwingli. In 1519, two years after Luther pounded photo: Huldrych Zwingli 50mm ISO 100 f/5.6 1/400s his 95 theses into the church door in Wittenberg, Zwingli brought the Reformation to Switzerland through his pulpit at Grossmünster. Today, Zwingli is known as one of the first Reformed Theologians and takes his place alongside Luther and Calvin as the Third Man of the Reformation. Zwingli s translation of the Bible, the Froschauer Bible, was printed several years before Luther s famous translation was published. Day 3 - October 22 Time is now of the essence as we come to the last full day of PhotoEx:Austria & Switzerland. Begin your day hitting the sights and shops of Paradeplatz to fill out your complement of photos and souvenirs. Drop in on Café Sprüngli for lunch and to grab some of their legendary chocolates to take back home. If you are still up for it, the Kunsthaus is a fantastic fine arts museum, featuring the works of Monet, van Gogh, Rodin and others. Our final dinner of the trip will be a splendid affair as we look back on the fantastic trip and enjoy some traditional Swiss fare. Day 4 - October 23 It is as they say, all good things must come to an end, and so has PhotoEx: Austria & Switzerland. After breakfast at the hostel we will head off to the Zurich airport with thousands of photos, amazing souvenirs, and memories to last a lifetime.

background: Is this real? PhotoEx:Italy 2011 30mm ISO 100 f/4 1/160s How to Prepare Even More Info photo: You should come! PhotoEx:New Zealand 2008 50mm ISO 100 f/5.6 1/200s PhotoEx:Austria & Switzerland is designed to be a fun time of exploring European culture and history with other Christian photographers. This means that we will be doing a lot of things European style, like walking and taking public transportation. There will be days when we are up early for the perfect shot, or stay out late because the city lights are just fantastic. There will also be lots of time to simply chill in a fun cafe or linger long over an excellent dinner. Here are a few tips that will help you as you prepare for the trip. Learn all you can While we don t require any previous photography experience, we do recommend students have attended Digital Photography 1 or a similar course to get the most out of this fantastic photo op. We also highly recommend that you study everything you can about Austria and Switzerland. Participate in group conversations Your experience starts the moment you sign up. Take advantage of the group on Facebook to engage with your fellow travellers early. Get in shape Most of us have things that we know we should be doing physically, emotionally, spiritually that we somehow never get around to... don t put them off. Get yourself in the best shape before you leave home. You re going to be walking quite a few miles in the 10 days you ll spend in Europe. Be ready for it! Click on the links below to access some more important information and forms. Gear list and packing video You need to pack your clothes and personal things for PhotoEx:Austria & Switzerland in a carry-on sized bag (22 x16 x10 ). Your camera gear and laptop can be in second camera bag or photo backpack. As an American, this will be a challenge, but we ve prepared a gear list and a packing video to help you out. If you re struggling to trim things down, just remember that you have to carry your own stuff or hire a taxi to do it for you!
