INTRODUCING DR. MARTENS: SS17 SEASONAL DIRECTION For SS17, Dr. Martens uses the 1990s global phenomenon of grunge as its core inspiration. This historically important counter-culture music scene exploded from the north-west coast of the USA, and in a short space of time dominated the world s music industry, charts and live circuit. Dr. Martens found themselves at the heart of this massive explosion of alternative thinking and music the 1460 was soon championed by millions of grunge fans worldwide. Festival culture also experienced a new popularity, which was also the moment that Dr. Martens sandals first experienced mass popularity. This is reflected in the collection, with new versions of long-standing classics, the re-introduction of Lost Archive styles as well as seasonal sandals. The eventual evolution of grunge s low-key, thrift store chic into high-end catwalk collections is also referenced. The individuality and eclectic nature of grunge fashion is also reflected in the use of tie-dye prints and an undercurrent of utility styling, as well as rugged leathers running through the offering. This mass of influences has been consumed and used to create a collection that references the 1990s, and in particular grunge, but with product that is sharply relevant and very contemporary. The paint splatter options within the collection of both footwear and clothing/ accessories are grunge-inspired, drawing on the early 1990s for colourful influence. The printed paint effect has been created internally by the DM s design team, so it is a unique customisation. The all-over printed graphic is intended to mimic the effect of an artist in the studio spilling paint over their boots, clothes etc... while they create. MADE IN MUSIC The classic triangular or square-shaped bandana cloth has a rich and varied history across a number of cultures and religions, dating back several centuries, but was a must-have accessory for any selfrespecting grunge fan in the 90s. A huge variety of decorations and patterns have been applied to bandanas over the years, including the use of paisley. This all-over digitally printed pattern pays tribute to this popularity on footwear, clothing and accessories in the range. TUNED-IN TIE DYE Grunge was a genre that incorporated lashings of heavy rock and punk attitude that were sometimes mixed with elements of hippy fashion. One such characteristic was the use of tie dye in grunge fashion, which was essentially driven by the fact it was an affordable and individual option. This idea has inspired the exclusive all-over tie dye prints used across both footwear and accessories for the range, all completely vegan. MADE IN ENGLAND JAPANESE DENIM INSPIRATION - BORO FABRIC (Left) The Pascal 8-Eye Boot is made with a genuine Indigo dyed fabric sourced from Japan and inspired by Japanese patchwork known as Boro. The word Boro translates as rags or scraps of cloth and is used to describe items which have been lovingly patched up and repaired over the years a trait originally understood to be a popularised by Japanese villagers in remote and rural areas. TUSCON LEATHER (Left) The Whiton 8-Eye Boot, Torriano 3-Eye Shoe and 3989 5-Eye Brogue Shoe use the premium Italian Tuscon leather which has a very soft and tactile feel. Tuscon leather is processed using natural organic vegetable materials which gives a natural aesthetic to the footwear. The grain surface is left naked with no finish so the true character of the natural leather can show through. STINGRAY LEATHER (Opposite) This premium Stingray leather used on the Pascal 8-eye boot and 1461 3-eye shoe in black is an unusual choice, a faux natural skin that is often overshadowed by more common animal prints and textures. The leather used here is an exotic printed material that mimics the natural, randomised textures of a stingray s multicoloured skin. Dr. Martens offer a comprehensive Made In England range. Both classic and innovative styles are available in a variety of colours and leather treatment. Constructed at the Cobb s Lane factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England. STEAD & CO PARTNERSHIP (Right) Tapping into the rich heritage of CF Stead has leant a sophisticated look to the classic Arthur 6-Eye Boot, a 1461 3-Eye Shoe and a 3989 5-Eye Brogue Shoe. The use of a refined Desert Oasis summer suede in shades of Mid-Grey, Mid-Blue or Chestnut offers a soft palette for versatile wearing.
