Humanities Activity Booklet 20 th to 22 nd July 2011

Introduction Here is an outline of all the events on offer in this year s Humanities Days, which are based around the theme of POSITIVE FEMALE ROLE MODELS. You will find information which gives you an outline of the different packages,each one offered for 2 days followed by a day of feedback and activities in school, unless it states otherwise), any cost, requirements and number of places available. Decide which one activity/package you wish to do. (Make sure that you have selected a second and even a third choice in case all the places have been filled on your first choice). Then fill in your permission slip/medical form. Years 8 and 9 should then sign up on Wednesday 18th May Years 7 and 10 sign up on Thursday 19 th May. On both days students should come along to the Oracy Block. Doors open at 8am. Students should bring along their 5 cheque and their completed medical form to reserve a place on their chosen activity. It should be a great set of days where students learn all sorts of new skills.mr Hepner

Do you want to feel the sand between your toes? Do you want to feel the buzz of the bustling city? Yes? Then this is the activity for you! One of the days will be spent in Bournemouth, exploring the beach and town centre. The other day will involve a visit to the city of London. There will be a flight on the London Eye, a cruise down the River Thames, and a walking tour seeing the sights of Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and 10 Downing Street. 26.00 NO: OF PLACES 90 9.00am to 4.30pm both days Packed lunch is required on both days Digital camera if possible, sun cream, hat, waterproof, comfy footwear, like walking! On day one we are off to Bourneville, Birmingham to visit Cadburys World where chocolate comes to life, for a fantastic fun filled day with a talk and interactive tour of the famous chocolate business. We will also get time to visit the biggest Cadburys shop in the world, yummy! On day two we will take over the school food rooms and make our own mouth-watering chocolate and confectionary treats, to eat at school and take home to your family and friends to try! This activity is both on and off site 24.00 NO: OF PLACES 48 9.30am to 3.30pm both days Must love Chocolate! Packed lunch is required on both days. Container to take chocolate home in on day 2!

On day one we will travel by tube to central London. In the morning we will visit the notorious Clink Prison, haunted by ghosts and previously home to some of England s most deadly criminals! Then in the afternoon, we will walk the short distance to the world famous London Dungeons! On day two visiting the London Bridge Experience, a thrilling experience, using the latest in Hollywood style wizardry with marvellous real life characters, guiding you through the ages on the bridge. Get ready to be entertained and amazed at what you will see. 24.00 NO: OF PLACES 48 For both days 9.30am at Hillingdon Tube and back at 3.30-4.00pm Packed lunch is required on both days, comfy footwear, no wimps! Are you interested in Music and broadcasting? Have you ever wanted to present your own radio show to the nation? If so, then this is the activity for you! The first day will be spent at the British Music Experience an interactive museum at the O2 in London, dedicated to the history of popular music in Britain. The second day will be spent at school producing and broadcasting a live radio programme. There will be short notice Editor Meetings, team discussions and guidance from an expert to give you an authentic Radio Station experience. This activity is both off and on site NO: OF PLACES 40 9.30am at Hillingdon Tube and back at TIMING 3.00-4.00pm first day and 10am to 3.30pm on the second day An interested in Music + broadcasting Packed lunch is required on both days, comfy footwear or day one.

DAY 1 ½ day: Pupils go to a London Photography studio for a fashion shoot with a professional photographer. Experience being a photographer and model for the day, explore how an image is created in fashion shoots (with clothing adjustments and hair and makeup). ½ day: Pupils have the opportunity to photograph each other and capture different location images (backgrounds e.g. buildings, trees etc.) DAY 2 In school pupils will get on the job training on Photoshop and experience what it would be like as a magazine designer for the day. Manipulate location photographs and fashion shoot pictures to create a photographic slide show of their experience. Pupils will pitch their magazine designs to the group. This activity is both off and on site 5.00 NO: OF PLACES 30 9.30am to 4pm both days A digital camera, packed lunch for both days, and an interest in photography Day 1 Students will take part in a theatre workshop exploring the theme of the production using interactive exercises and song and dance to explore identity, individuality, bullying and ambition. Students will then use all the skills learnt to perform a song from the show at the end of the workshop. They will then watch the performance.. Day 2 Students will visit the London Film Museum to explore items from the British Film Industry from films such as Harry Potter, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Indiana Jones and Clash of the Titans. The visit will include a workshop where students can explore the art of film making and animation. 40.00 NO: OF PLACES 60 10am to 5pm both days A love of Film & Theatre Packed lunch for both days

This is a 5 day trip from 18 th to 22 July. We will travel by coach and Eurotunnel, stating in the town of Loches in France. During our stay we will be visiting the castle of Blois, Amboise and Loches. There will be a guided tour of a vineyard, the museum of magic in Blois, a visit to a glass factory and the Mini- Chateau Park. Also included is a full day at the Futuroscope theme park. The hotel is a 2 star hotel with an excellent restaurant and accommodation is twin-beds with en-suite facilities PLACES LEFT TWO This Activity PLACES is LEFT Full This activity is residential 465.00 NO: OF PLACES 40 Five days in France N/A Day One: Indoor Rock Climbing at the Westway Centre which has over 300 climbing routes! You will have a 4 hour course and will be taught how to climb, belay and abseil - be prepared, it s high! Day Two: Snowboarding, Skiing, and Ringos?! At the Indoor Snowcentre in Hemel Hempstead. We will travel by coach and spend an hour doing each activity it may be inside, but it s still cold! A great opportunity to learn new skills and to find out if you are goofy or regular!? 62.00 NO: OF PLACES 48 9am to 4pm both days Packed lunch for both days Warm clothes and gloves for snow day

Two days of fun activities including as much as possible and having a huge amount of fun at the same time! There are plenty of activities on offer and the perfect place to try them out, Archery, Kayaking, Raft Building and Adventure Ropes. Get ready to be scared out of your skin from great heights and wet beyond belief in the warm waters of Willen Lake in Milton Keynes. 75.00 NO: OF PLACES 80 8am to 4.30pm both days Must be able to swim 25 metres Packed lunch, a change of clothes, towel, sun cream, and plenty of enthusiasm! Day One: Starts with a trip to the Enchanted Palace, set within Kensington Palace, here contemporary fashion by leading designers collides with the history of real life princesses including Queen Victoria and Princess Diana. Eat lunch alfresco in Hyde Park, followed by a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum, to see fashion through the ages. Throughout the day you will gain inspiration ready to work on your own fairytale themed fashions. Day Two: is at school where you will weave fashion with fairytales modernising, designing and creating your own fashions based around princesses, wicked stepmothers and magical creatures of your favourite fairytales, with the pictures and ideas you collected on day one. Have you 'Got to Dance'? Then you want to come on this trip where you will have a spell bounding first day of dance workshops at Uxbridge best dance school 'Futunity UK' where you will learn street, hip hop, krumping and braking from some awesome professional dance teachers! Day 2 we will journey into central London and watch 'Stomp' Live in the West End. The unique show combines dance, music and comedy to create a mind blowing show! 27.00 NO: OF PLACES 60 9.30am to 4pm both days Loose clothes to dance in Packed lunch for both days This activity runs over 4 days. Students will arrive at Heathrow by 7.15am on Tuesday 19 th for their flight to Rome and return to Heathrow at 7pm on Friday 22 th July. Students will visit St Peter s Basillica, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. There will also be time for that essential shopping trip and an opportunity to taste local cuisine. A truly exceptional trip! This is a fantastic opportunity to leave a lasting mark on Swakeleys School. We will use the two days to create a number of Olympic inspired murals based around the theme of women. There will be a variety of different media used to create one huge mural for the New Sports Hall and smaller ones for other locations around school. You don t have to be artistic merely creative and enthusiastic as we produce collages, painting and drawings using all that technology has to offer! This activity is on site NO: OF PLACES 30 10am-3pm Packed lunch both days Wear old clothes Bring newspapers and magazines Be creative and enthusiastic Have you ever dreamed of rock superstardom? Could you see your name in lights? Do you enjoy photo shoots? Do you enjoy being behind the camera or maybe you want to be in front of it? If you choose Wannabe Popstars you will launch your own rock or pop band. You will create a promotional Poster for your band and have the opportunity to use the state of the art media suite to create a snippet from your very own pop video. Perhaps you have dreamed of being interviewed on a chat show-you can make it all happen! You will learn to use Photoshop, i movie and digital video cameras during two days of exciting marketing activities. And the best news you don t have to sing a note! The first day will be spent researching a famous fashion icon of your choice looking at their style and what you like about their designs. Using the internet, fashion magazines and catalogues make a collage of all the things you find. Then on day 2 it s off to visit the largest shopping centre in England WESTFIELDS where you will be given a budget to buy an outfit for your chosen icon in their style. ( Spending money is required for 2 nd Day) NO: OF PLACES 30 10am-3pm Packed lunch for both days Have style! Day One visiting the Doctor Who Experience an unmissable adventure featuring an exhilarating and unique walk-through experience and an awe-inspiring exhibition at Olympia Day Two off to the science museum for interactive exhibits and games that challenge you to consider the future! Taking in the Cosmos & Culture exhibition and The Exploring Space gallery with rockets, satellite s, space probes and landers. Prepare for the unknown.
