Page 2 Chairman s Chat Hi, We must definitely be into autumn / winter now, it s dark going to and from work, and as I write this from our bolt hole looking out over the Eden Valley to the Lake District, many of the leaves have turned to their autumn colours or have all ready fallen. Well back to club matters. The September club night was our second Rocker Box Race night of the year, with seven cars presented for scrutineering and practice runs. As we only had seven cars but needed eight to run the races, all car numbers were put in a hat and the car drawn would run twice in the first quarter final round. As can be seen from the table below Brian was lucky enough to drawn and make up the eight car. Although I went out in the quarter finals I was reasonably pleased with the cars performance as it ran much straighter than earlier in the year. The night before I noticed that the rear axle could move backwards and forwards slightly on one side giving it unwanted rear wheel steering. With the aid of a piece of card the problem was greatly improved, but still requires more work. During the early rounds many of the cars clearly had steering issues with only a few making it to the finish line within their lanes. By the time we got to the semi final runs the cars were performing much better with the first to cross the winning line often deciding the winner. For those not yet familiar with the Rocker Box racer you will find the rules later in the newsletter, this will then give you chance over the winter to build a car ready for next years club nights. On the 7th October there was the Sunday Run & Lunch which by all accounts was well attended and with some 30ish members getting to the finish at the Farmers Arms. Hopefully one of our members who took part will write an article for the Newsletter.

Page 3 Chairman s Chat Committee 2019 Well I have some more good news, in last month s newsletter I let you know that Paul Peel had been coopted on to committee. Since then Jim Worrall also showed his interest in committee and joined us at our last meeting, he too has been co-opted on to this years committee. I hope you will all join me in thanking them for their interest and enthusiasm in supporting the club. Although I m not aware of any volunteers yet to stand for chairman or vice chairman, I know that having some new blood on the committee will be very good for the club. Hopefully you will all have received the recent broadcast regarding the October club night and Bonfire night but just in case please see its content below. I am currently scanning these and we hope to be able to make them available to club members. Well that's almost it for this month s Chairman s Chat except to say if you are interested in finding out more about the committee or supporting the club by organising or helping to organise an event, please contact me or any member of the committee. Hope to see many of you at the club night for the Guest Speaker. Tony

The reason for this is quite simply there is so much going on in the run up to Christmas, it means we can get a better quality and more relaxed venue and especially have something to look forward to after Xmas. The venue is the Leyland Hotel right next to junction 28, M6. Would all trophy holders please make arrangements to return their trophies to either Mick or any member of the committee who lives in Lostock Hall by the end of November in order to facilitate engraving the relevant names for this year. Whilst the venue is a little more upmarket than previous years, the dress code is still smart casual. Accommodation is available for those who don t want to drive home that evening.

Page 7 Secretaries Scribble I'm afraid I don't have too much to report this month, I'm sure you are all aware of the forthcoming events, namely fireworks evening, Christmas quiz, cold turkey run and the what a relief Christmas is over soirée in January, But for those amongst the members with a little time on their hands between now and the resurrection of the MG next spring and who may also be considering trying to polish a few years off the old banger, the speaker at the October club night may be of interest. He has many years experience in car cleaning and detailing and will be giving us a presentation on the correct use of car detailing products mostly rather more sophisticated than a bucket of water and sponge! Apart from basic cleaning there are the restoration, and improvement products used by professional detailers and he can give use some insight into the most appropriate selection and correct use the various things available, and he can also give advice on any particular difficulties you may have. So come along and prepare yourselves for when you next get the car out, leave the Fairy liquid on the sink strictly for the washing up and see if modern technology can produce better results. I for one will be delighted to find something that will make my Forty year old MGB smell like it has just left the showroom, who knows how far things have come on since Autoglym first appeared in 1965? There may well be new things we can learn about. There is also another outing on the horizon, a few members are making plans to travel to the classic car show at the NEC on 10th November because of queuing, proximity and cost of car parking its planned to go by train. I can provide some details to anyone interested or you can look at the link posted on facebook recently by Godfrey. Paul Heyes

Page 13 Christmas Quiz 27th November ******ADVANCE NOTICE****** Christmas Quiz, Club Night, Railway Tavern Tuesday 27 November 2018 @ 20.00 Yes folks, it s that time of year again. The nights are drawing in, MGs are being SORNed and members of P&D MGEC are preparing to do battle for the honour of seeing their names on the Annual Quiz Shield. Since last year, when The Black Panthers (David Williams & Karen, Godfrey & Ann Dennis, and Tony Sharples) lifted the coveted trophy, the club has welcomed a number of new members and it looks like we will be welcoming some loyal friends from further up the coast, so it seemed sensible to outline what goes on at the quiz for the benefit of those who haven t been before in the hopes that those new members and friends will come along and join in the fun and importantly, know what to expect. And if anyone is worried about making a fool of themselves, don t worry; Elizabeth and I have the monopoly on that for the night! So what goes on? Well in previous years, we ve had five separate rounds that have included a music round (Christmas records, TV theme tunes and songs featuring cars have all been there), two table quizzes (pictures of celebrities in pantomime costumes, celebrity pairings and Christmas anagrams have all featured in the past), a tasting round (we ve had crisps, sausages and cheese) and a general knowledge round. Quiz teams are limited to a maximum of 5 people which means we don t get super-sized teams which no-one stands of beating and the odd number means that members of the club who come on their own easily find a team to join. Mobile phones and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited, because well, it just isn t fair! This year s quiz will broadly follow the same format although we have reduced the number of questions in each round. There will be a tasting round, but you re going to have to come on the night if you want to find out what it is! And that s about it. Everyone s welcome; it costs nothing to join in; you don t have to be technically competent and if you have a particular interest in football, it won t help you much (although we might have asked one football related question in the past). There will be a further reminder in the November Newsletter but in the meantime, why not put a reminder in your diary or your smart phone? You might just enjoy it! Roger & Elizabeth Schofield
