JJ Joubert is a Data Architect and unofficially official PPDM advocate at Drilling Info. Currently he is working specifically with Completion data, Directional Surveys, and Hydraulic fracturing and the intricacies of loading this data into PPDM. JJ started his career as a Software Develop in the late 90 s and immigrated to the United States just in time for Y2K, he holds a B.S in Computer Science from the University of Pretoria, and a Bachelors in Business from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.
Delivering Meaningful Frac Data From public data sources Alan Berezin, CTO Josef Joubert, Data Architect
Producers and Consumers Data Disclaimer: As a consumer of regulatory data, DI may have unique needs for a data model. Data Consumers Data Producers Service Co/E&P Regulatory Agencies Environmental PPDM PPDM? Eng, Geo PPDM PPDM? Drilling Info
DI Customers Want Pressure (curve), break pressure Volumes: water, proppant, chemicals Rate of flow Isolation method Per stage with MD,TVD for upper, lower perf. Dates on stages, duration
Current State of Incoming Data Drilling Info has ingested and delivered deep completion data since the company was started. But frac data was unstructured text (type what you see). 11041-15419 : 15% HYDROCHLORIC ACID, 30# WATER FRAC G, HYBOR G 30#, PREMIUM WHITE - 30/50, 20/40 Customers want structured data Find wells with > 20 stages Deeper analytics

LA Data Very Light LA data is usually very light (from scout report) Typically just get number of stages and dates
ND Frac Detail ND Data is one of the better data sets but not perfect Many Sources from same Operator Well Time Logs Well Diagrams Stimulation Section in Completion Form Inconsistency Often the Measured Depth is reversed Summary vs. Detail
Frac Detail Sources: Time Log Attachment to Regulatory forms, the most detailed source but is unstructured and varies by Operator; a single multi-stage fracture can have 50+ pages Colors represent different data points:
Frac Detail: Well diagram Sometimes very detailed, but mostly summary information - This example has no stages, pressures or end time.
Frac Detail: Completion Form Older Forms had less detail, newer forms have Well Stimulation Section: In this case it ended up in the Perforation Section (older form no stage info)
Inconsistency Horizontal intervals are normally listed from Toe and are treated backwards up the wellbore: Reversed:
Wellbores: Which Wellbore was Treated? This Example has three completion forms and three wellbores, but only two of the completion forms contributed to three Completions: Original Form Filed 2 nd Form Filed, exact copy of first except it had Production Test 3 rd Form Filed with TWO Laterals
DI HF Model Sources Outside of DI, three sources are being referenced: Frac Focus (fracfocus.org) GWPC s RBDMS (www.rbdmsonline.org) Energistics (w3.energistics.org) StimJob In discussions last year with PPDM Bruce Smith suggested we start with a simple model to get the conversation started At DI the focus has been more on a Engineering centric model
Additional treatment attributes Broken down into phases Aggregate Injection rate Start & End Time Aggregate Pressure
Suggested PPDM 3.8/9 Extension Use existing 3.8 Treatment table as a summary To Completions To Stratigraphy? Add Frac Technique Add Total Stages
