Follow procedure as shown and manufacturer s instructions. Gel Nails (Light-Cured) D Apply nail forms to all nails; refer to procedure in this chapter, page 362 or nail tips from chapter 8, page 346 CAUTION: Use only disposable nail forms. Reusable forms are made of metal or plastic, which cannot be used under UV light. G Use a larger amount of gel and apply to zone 1, building the free edge. Directions A Use cotton-wrapped manicure stick or pusher and gently push back cuticles. Apply a nail antiseptic to the natural nails; spray on or wipe over nail with nail wipe. E Apply a base coat of gel acrylic to entire nail, using a small amount of gel. H Cure gel under UV light source. Repeat Steps G and H on thumbs following manufacturer s instructions. B Shape free edge of natural nails and buff vertically following grain of nail to remove shine or natural oils for adhesion. C Apply gel primer to natural nails to enhance adhesion. NOTE: Not all gel systems require a gel primer; follow manufacturer s directions. F Cure (harden) gel under UV light source. Repeat Steps E and F on thumbs following manufacturer s instructions. I Apply gel over entire nail, building layers to form the thickness of a natural nail. Cure nails under UV light and repeat on thumbs. Follow manufacturer s directions on building gel product. K Completed gel nail before shaping and buffing. L Use a coarse or medium abrasive to shape and smooth free edge. N Use a buffer/shiner on surface of nail to produce a natural finish. Ask client to wash hands to remove product residue and filing dust. O Apply cuticle oil or cream and massage into skin surrounding nails. E Continue blending using a medium to fine abrasive. H Apply gel acrylic to fill-in area. B Use cotton-wrapped manicure stick or pusher and gently push back cuticles. Apply a nail antiseptic to the nails; spray on or wipe over nail with nail wipe. F Apply a base coat of gel primer to fill-in area ONLY. I Lightly press a base gel into fill-in area keeping away from surrounding skin. Gel will naturally conform to nail plate due to product consistency. Directions Lesson 5 J Cure gel under UV light source. Repeat Steps H thru J on thumbs following manufacturer s instructions. Gel Refill (Light-Cured) M Use a coarse abrasive to smooth over fill-in area. P Finish by placing nails under a UV light to cure the gel sealer. Ask client to wash hands to remove product residue and filing dust. Repeat Steps O and P on thumbs. K Reapply a builder gel in fill-in area to increase thickness. Cure nails under UV light and repeat on thumbs. Follow manufacturer s directions on building gel product. N Continue smoothing over surface of nails with a medium or fine abrasive. When completed, view all sides of nails for proper proportion. Q Massage cuticle cream or oil into skin surrounding nails. L Wipe nail with a gel cleaner (alcohol or acetone based) to remove sticky residue or inhibition layer. Repeat Steps K and L on thumbs. O Apply a gel sealer to provide durability and shine to the nails. R Completed gel refills with natural finish. 7. Suggest appropriate retail tools for the client s at-home nail maintenance. 8.
