The Art of Seating by Günter Beltzig

Löffler Edition: The Art of Seating from the 1970s in a limited edition by Günter Beltzig Having become famous as Pegasus the seating sculpture by Günter Beltzig is a masterpiece of artistic workmanship and about 20 items were produced in 1973 using a costly processing technique for plastics. On the occasion of the designer s 70th birthday, LÖFFLER in Reichenschwand is producing a series of this classic in plastic. Beginning in April 2011 aficionados of the Art of Seating can acquire a limited edition of 399. Five years after the introduction of Beltzig s Floris, Pegasus gained the attention of architects, designers and interested in fine art. Floris can now be found in the collections of numerous museums (Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; the Neue Sammlung in Nuremberg) and as shown at several exhibitions (Centre Georges Pompidou and Musée d Orsay in Paris; the Vitra Design Museum Collection). Floris has recently appeared in the larger international auction houses such as Sotheby s and Christie s in London, Wright in Chicago and at the Dorotheum in Vienna. You want a revolution? The Spirit of the 1960s and 1970s in Furniture Design The plastic furniture of the 1960s and 1970s was an awakening of shapes and colors, breaking away from the clear-cut lines of the Bauhaus school. Those years were characterized by social utopia, plastics and new colorfulness. Furniture became multifunctional and developed its own intensely individual character: Pegasus is neither chair nor table but an impressive room-enhancing sculpture. With its bright red color and that perfectly smooth surface it seems to be an object from another world. Beltzig was inspired by a visit with his cousin in Weimar. At the Goethehaus Beltzig discovered a standing desk that had a saddle as a seat, at which the elderly Goethe drafted his works. Beltzig first designed a white horse, which then evolved into a new shape with the new color, red, to punctuate the abstract validity: a chair to muse with a desk to muse appearing as the luxuriant expression of a generation of provocation. Made in Germany The same elaborate technology that was used initially is being used in this limited edition. Heinz Roehnert, who in 1973 had already worked with the brothers Beltzig on the 20 original pieces of the the red Beltzig seating sculpture, was able to be won over for this limited edition as well. He works with a handlaminated, fiberglass-reinforced polyester technique. The two-component resin, reinforced with fiberglass for tensile strength, is applied to the mold in five to seven layers. The craftsmanship can be seen in each thinly applied layer and in the material composition. The less resin used in relation to the fiberglass, the tougher, more elastic and more movable is the piece. After each step of the process the air bubbles are manually rolled out of the material. After tempering at 59 C the overhanging edges are removed with a diamond saw blade and then ground: evidence of the uniqueness of each individual piece.

Seating that moves LÖFFLER GmbH It was 23 years ago that Werner Löffler came up with seating that moves, writing the first chapter in a dedicated story of success. That patented ERGO TOP technology is constantly improving the ergonomics of seating. The production of seating furniture in Reichenschwand, Bavaria, has been growing year-by-year; its swivel desk chairs have reached an ever-growing number of user groups, all quality-conscious and in search of the perfect shape. Improving simple sitting was also the pivotal idea of Günter Beltzig and is exactly what unites his art with Werner Löffler The LÖFFLER COLLECTION His love of applied art was both reason and mission for Werner Löffler and his Sammlung LÖFFLER: in October 2010 the largest European private collection of seating furniture of the past two centuries was opened. All of pieces exhibited are in the original condition and, authentically, have not been restored to a contemporary historical condition. The Sammlung LÖFFLER impressively shows the various solutions in seating that were offered in the various eras: from piece production to serial production, from wood to steel tubing, fiberglass and carbon, the Sammlung LÖFFLER is a panopticon of seating and the craftsmanship of the past two centuries. "F oris" by Günter Belzig is, of course, one of the collector s items.

LÖFFLER Edition Biography Both the classics and new creations of famous designers will be produced in limited edition under this heading. The limited items in the LÖFFLER Edition are numbered and delivered with a signed certificate of authenticity. A catalog raisonné will provide a record of the acquisition and whereabouts of every single piece. This first limited edition allows Löffler to showcase its responsible handling of resources: plastic is processed in traditional craft professionalism to a timeless, perpetually unique objet d art. That Johann Wolfgang von Goethe s statement The mind grows by broadening one s perspective and his standing desk from old Weimar would strike a chord in the year 2011 with 1970s design. Günter Beltzig and the LÖFFLER mission statement is the law of resonance. The seating sculpture by Günter Beltzig is to be the kick-off for a series of limited editions by designers whose works are part of the Sammlung LÖFFLER. This coming-to-terms with the cultural history of seating along with a passion for aesthetic shapes is found in each of the contemporary LÖFFLER Collections and the passion for craftsmanship can now be found in the LÖFFLER Edition.
